Background: Social-cognitive theorists suggest that cognitive-emotional factors play essential roles in academic outputs like academic engagement. Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between social achievement goals and academic engagement by mediating role of academic and social positive emotions. Methods: The method of present study was descriptive cross-sectional study based on correlational research. Using cluster multi-stage sampling method, this study included 566 undergraduate students (278 male and 288 female) in the first semester of 2018. The research instruments were Social Achievement Goals scale, Academic Hope scale, Admiration scale, and Academic Engagement inventory. Data were analyzed using correlation matrix and structural equation modeling. Results: Results of analyzing data showed that social development goal had a positive indirect effect (β = 0.41, P = 0.01) on academic engagement through academic hope and admiration. Also, social demonstration-approach goal had an indirect and negative effect (β = -0.08, P = 0.01) on academic engagement by the mediating role of admiration. In general, the research model was able to explain 31% of the variance of academic engagement with two latent variables of social achievement goals and academic and social positive emotions. Conclusions: In general, social achievement goals and positive emotions significantly explained the variance of academic engagement. The findings provide supportive evidence for how motivations and emotions can affect academic engagement.

Abstract In Iran, a large number of adolescents compete every year to enter university, given the better job opportunities that may exist after graduation. The hope of having more education affects students’ academic engagement. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between academic hope and academic engagement with the mediating role of academic buoyancy, using the Academic Hope Scale, Academic Buoyancy Scale, and Academic Engagement Scale. The participants in the study were 353 Iranian students in the last year of high school who had applied to enter university in 2019. Data were analysed using structural equation modelling procedures. The results showed that there was a direct significant relationship between academic hope (p ≤ .01, β = 0.19) and academic buoyancy (p ≤ .01, β = 0.25) with academic engagement. There was a direct and significant relationship between academic hope and academic buoyancy (p ≤ .01, β = 0.33). And academic buoyancy partially mediated the relationship between academic hope and academic engagement. The discussion concerns the potential benefits of implementing interventions designed to enhance academic hope to increase learners’ academic engagement.

The aim of the current study was to investigate the correlation of academic hope with academic procrastination; to determine the differences in the academic procrastination of both men and women; to understand why students conduct academic procrastination; and to know the academic hope of students. The study uses a mixed-method research design. The results showed that academic hope has a positive and significant correlation with academic procrastination; there is no significant difference between male and female students in any scale of academic hope and academic procrastination; the reason students conduct procrastination is “I generally delay before starting on work I have to do”; and the academic hope students are unique because it relates to God and parents.

The present study aimed at exploring the predictors of academicmotivation of adolescents by analyzing the academic efficacy andacademic hope. The sample was consisted of 1581 students from ninetowns of Lahore. Sampling was done through area probability samplingstrategy. The data was collected by using translated and adaptedAcademic Efficacy Scale (Arooj & Ijaz, 2017), Academic Hope Scale(Arooj & Ijaz, 2017), and Academic Motivation Scale (Arooj & Ijaz,2017). Pearson Product Moment Correlation analysis showed theexistence of positive relationship between academic efficacy, academichope and intrinsic and extrinsic academic motivation. StepwiseRegression Analysis displayed two models. In these models, academicefficacy and academic hope predicted intrinsic academic motivation andcontributed variance of 24% and 13%, respectively. Furthermore, theStepwise Regression Analysis for extrinsic academic motivation showedtwo models in which academic efficacy and academic hope contributedvariance of 22% and 12% respectively.

This chapter covers the multiple measures currently used to assess hope theory. Hope, as theorized by Snyder and colleagues, was originally determined to be a global construct measuring agency and pathways toward goal attainment. Using much of the original theory, hope research has expanded, resulting in multiple measures across different applications and domains. By exploring the context specificity, these scales have been shown to consistently predict outcomes across differing domains, supporting the reliability and validity of new hope measurement. It is anticipated that with more specific hope measurement, the more accurate hope assessment and intervention can become. Concepts covered in this chapter include academic hope, math hope, writing hope, work hope, children’s hope, employment hope, and state hope.
