Abstract We perform two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations of reconnection in magnetically dominated electron-positron plasmas subject to strong Compton cooling. We vary the magnetization σ ≫ 1, defined as the ratio of magnetic tension to plasma inertia, and the strength of cooling losses. Magnetic reconnection under such conditions can operate in magnetically dominated coronae around accreting black holes, which produce hard X-rays through Comptonization of seed soft photons. We find that the particle energy spectrum is dominated by a peak at mildly relativistic energies, which results from bulk motions of cooled plasmoids. The peak has a quasi-Maxwellian shape with an effective temperature of ∼100 keV, which depends only weakly on the flow magnetization and the strength of radiative cooling. The mean bulk energy of the reconnected plasma is roughly independent of σ, whereas the variance is larger for higher magnetizations. The spectra also display a high-energy tail, which receives ∼25 per cent of the dissipated reconnection power for σ = 10 and ∼40 per cent for σ = 40. We complement our particle-in-cell studies with a Monte Carlo simulation of the transfer of seed soft photons through the reconnection layer, and find the escaping X-ray spectrum. The simulation demonstrates that Comptonization is dominated by the bulk motions in the chain of Compton-cooled plasmoids and, for σ ∼ 10, yields a spectrum consistent with the typical hard state of accreting black holes.

AbstractDistributions different from those predicted by equilibrium statistical mechanics are commonplace in a number of physical situations, such as plasmas and self-gravitating systems. The best strategy for probing these distributions and unavailing their origins consists in combining theoretical knowledge with experiments, involving both direct and indirect measurements, as those associated with dispersion relations. This paper addresses, in a quite general context, the signature of nonequilibrium distributions in dispersion relations. We consider the very general scenario of distributions corresponding to a superposition of equilibrium distributions, that are well-suited for systems exhibiting only local equilibrium, and discuss the general context of systems obeying the combination of the Schrödinger and Poisson equations, while allowing the Planck’s constant to smoothly go to zero, yielding the classical kinetic regime. Examples of media where this approach is applicable are plasmas, gravitational systems, and optical molasses. We analyse in more depth the case of classical dispersion relations for a pair plasma. We also discuss a possible experimental setup, based on spectroscopic methods, to directly observe these classes of distributions.

Compton scattering of gamma rays propagating in a pair plasma can drive the formation of a relativistic electron positron beam. This process is scrutinized theoretically and numerically via particle-in-cell simulations. In addition, we determine in which conditions the beam can prompt a beam-plasma instability and convert its kinetic energy into magnetic energy. We argue that such conditions can be met at the photosphere radius of bright gamma-ray bursts.

The modulational instability (MI) of ion-acoustic (IA) waves (IAWs) and associated IA rogue waves (IARWs) are studied in double-pair plasma containing inertial positive and negative ions, inertialess non-extensive electrons and iso-thermal positrons. A standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) is derived by employing reductive perturbation method. It can be seen from the numerical analysis that the plasma system supports both modulationally stable (unstable) parametric regime in which the dispersive and nonlinear coefficients of the NLSE have opposite (same) sign. It is also found that the basic features of IAWs (viz., MI criteria of IAWs, amplitude, and width of the IARWs, etc.) are rigorously changed by the plasma parameters such as mass, charge state, and number density of the plasma species. The outcomes of our present investigation should be useful in understanding the propagation of nonlinear electrostatic IAWs and associated IARWs in astrophysical and laboratory plasmas.

AbstractThe dynamics of short intense electromagnetic pulses propagating in a relativistic pair plasma is governed by a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a new type of focusing-defocusing saturable nonlinearity. In this context, we provide an existence theory for ring-profiled optical vortex solitons. We prove the existence of both saddle point and minimum type solutions. Via a constrained minimization approach, we prove the existence of solutions where the photon number may be prescribed, and we get the nonexistence of small-photon-number solutions. We also use the constrained minimization to compute the soliton’s profile as a function of the photon number and other relevant parameters.
