AbstractThe association between second to fourth finger ratio and thyroid diseases is unexplained. There is a possible interaction between prenatal exposition to sex hormone and thyroid functions in the adulthood. The study included 175 adults investigated in Łódź in the central Poland. It consisted of two main parts: a survey including questions about occurrence of thyroid gland dysfunction and anthropometric measurements (body mass and height and length of the second and fourth finger, waist and hip circumferences). The women who had thyroid disease had higher 2D:4D digit ratio (left hand) (mean = 1.004; SD = 0.036) than healthy ones (mean = 0.989; SD = 0.030) (t = − 2105; p = 0.038; d = 0.707). The association between thyroid diseases occurrence and prenatal steroid hormone exposition is noticed. Only females who had thyroid diseases tend to have higher 2D:4D digit ratio, for left hand.

Patient G., male, 32 years old was admitted to Chengdu Rheumatism hospital with the complains of pain and ulceration at the site of big tophaceous stone of fourth finger joint on the right hand as well as the pain and restricted movements in other right hand joints (elbow, wrist, fingers). Patient was first diagnosed with the gout approximately 10 years prior; by his own choice did not receive any urate-lowering treatment, only using oral analgesics during gout attacks. After surgery and following urate lowering therapy patient has noted functional improvement and reduction of pain. Decrease in serum urate levels from 586.7 to 469.3 μmol/L was reported. Wounds healing took from 1 to 1.5 weeks, with the wound on fourth metacarpophalangeal joint of the right hand being the last one to heal due to the wide ulceration defect. The longer follow-up period is needed to fully evaluate functional outcome (6-month follow-up examinations were scheduled).

Dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma is a well-recognized entity, but its occurrence in the distal extremities is exceedingly rare. We present the case of a 49-year-old woman who experienced local recurrence of an “enchondroma” of the proximal phalanx of the fourth finger of the left hand, which had been initially treated with intralesional curettage at another hospital 4 years before, and 1 year before for a local recurrence. The imaging findings indicated an aggressive behavior, and an incisional biopsy showed a highly cellular proliferation of spindle and pleomorphic elements without evidence of matrix production intermixed with few fragments of a well-differentiated cartilaginous neoplasm with bland cellular atypia, focal nuclear hyperchromatism, and binucleation. An isocitrate dehydrogenase 2 R172S mutation was detected. The final diagnosis was dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma. Despite amputation of the fourth finger, the patient developed lung metastases and further local relapse. Recurrent cartilaginous tumors of the extremities should not be underestimated and should be followed in view of the possible acquisition of aggressive clinical behavior.

Pornography addiction and sexual dysfunction are increasingly prevalent in young men. Previous studies suggest that prenatal androgen exposure plays a role in addiction and sexual functionality. Here, we tested whether lower second-to-fourth finger length ratio (2D:4D) and later age at spermarche, both putative indicators of higher androgen levels in utero, correlate with online sexual compulsivity (OSC scale of ISST), erectile function (IIEF-5), and ejaculatory control (PEPA) in 4,370 young men (age IQR: 25–26 years) of the Cohort Study on Substance Use Risk Factors. Statistical analyses revealed that lower 2D:4D correlated with higher scores on the OSC scale. Moreover, higher age at spermarche correlated with higher OSC scores and decreased erectile function. Interestingly, OSC severity, but not the frequency of pornography use, correlated negatively with erectile function and ejaculatory control. This is the first study to associate two independent proxies of prenatal testosterone level with OSC. These findings provide novel insight into intrauterine predisposition of sexual behavior and related sexual function in adulthood.

The aim of the study is a comparative analysis of the linear parameters of the length and width of the diaphysis of the middle phalanges in children and adolescents of Tajikistan and Western India, and also the possibility of using these linear parameters to establish the age of children of the compared ethnic groups. On 325 radiographs of the right hand in male children and adolescents of the Kanibadam region of the Republic of Tajikistan and the city of Mumbai (Western India) at the age of 6-17 years, the length of the middle phalanges and the width of their diaphysis were determined. To determine the relationship between the age of children of the compared ethnic groups and the linear parameters of the length and width of the shaft of the phalanges, Spearman's nonparametric correlation coefficient was used. Comparative assessment of the values of indicators by age was carried out by the method of parametric and non-parametric analysis. In boys of Tajikistan, the closest correlation was established between the age of children and the length of the middle phalanx of the third finger, while in their Indian peers this ratio was determined evenly for the II-IV fingers of the hand. The width of the diaphysis of the phalanges of the fourth finger increased most significantly with age in boys of Tajikistan, and in the Indians, the width of the third finger, the smallest increase in the width of the diaphysis in the compared groups was determined for the phalanges of the second finger. The linear parameters of the middle phalanges of the hand can be used to identify the age of children and adolescents in Tajikistan and Western India at the age of 6-17 years. For Tajik children, the best predictor of age is the linear parameter of the length of the middle phalanx of the index, and for their Indian peers, the length of the middle phalanx of the II-IV fingers is equally.

Here we report a case of pyoderma gangrenosum managed with immunosuppressive therapy. A 55-year-old woman presented with a one week history of several painful nodules on her hands and face that appeared abruptly. She reported similar lesions in the past that resolved without treatment. Her medical history was significant for rheumatoid arthritis for which she was not undergoing treatment due to cost. Physical exam revealed large, ulcerated nodules on the left fifth finger, right fourth finger and left cheek near nostril. Given the negative cultures, and histopathology consistent with the diagnosis of pyoderma gangrenosum, the patient was started on intravenous methylprednisolone. Within five days, the size, depth and associated pain of the ulcers had significantly improved. Therapy was changed to oral prednisone and patient continued to improve after 1 week. Pyoderma gangrenosum is an uncommon cutaneous ulcerative disease that is generally managed with immunosuppressive therapy. Topical corticosteroids may be sufficient to treat mild and local disease while systemic steroids are considered first line therapy for severe and more extensive disease. This case highlights the rapid improvement that can be achieved with systemic immunosuppressive.

Background: Digit lengths are dimorphic in some other creatures as in humans. In particular, gender analysis can be done using the ratio between the second finger (D2) and the fourth finger (D4). The aim of this study is to examine whether the ratio of foot fingers is related to gender in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). Methods: In this study, 60 adults (30 female and 30 male) Japanese quail foot digit length ratios were examined in relation to gender. The ratios of the lengths of the second finger (D2), the third finger (D3) and the fourth finger (D4) to each other were taken on the computer. Result: In addition, geometrical analysis of base posture positions between female and male individuals were made and shape differences were revealed. It was observed that the second finger (D2) of male birds was more introverted than in females. It was seen that Principal component analysis (PCA1) explained 53.07% of the total variation between female and male groups. PCA2 explained 17.6% of the total variation and PCA3 announced 11.83%. In statistical morphometric analysis, the difference in shape between the male and female was statistically insignificant. D2:D3, D2:D4 and D3:D4 ratios were higher in males. It was observed that the lateral angle in both genders was higher than medial angle. This difference was statistically significant (p less than 0.001). While the average of the lateral angle was 50.89% in all individuals, the average of the medial angle was 42.81%. The highest length in all individuals belonged to the third finger. It was observed that the ratio of D2:D4 among females used in the study was 0.867 in females and 0.877 in males.

The 2D: 4D digit ratio, the ratio of the length of the second finger to the length of the fourth finger, is often considered a proxy for testosterone exposure in utero. A recent study reported, among other things, an association between the left-hand 2D:4D and self-employment in a sample of 974 adults. In this preregistered study, we replicate the 2D:4D results on a sample of more than 2100 adults from the German Socioeconomic Panel-Innovation Sample (SOEP-IS). We find no statistically significant associations between 2D:4D and self-employment.
