AbstractIn this paper, a nonlinear elliptic obstacle problem is studied. The nonlinear nonhomogeneous partial differential operator generalizes the notions of p-Laplacian while on the right hand side we have a multivalued convection term (i.e., a multivalued reaction term may depend also on the gradient of the solution). The main result of the paper provides existence of the solutions as well as bondedness and closedness of the set of weak solutions of the problem, under quite general assumptions on the data. The main tool of the paper is the surjectivity theorem for multivalued functions given by the sum of a maximal monotone multivalued operator and a bounded multivalued pseudomonotone one.

The goal of this paper is to investigate a new class of elliptic mixed boundary value problems involving a nonlinear and nonhomogeneous partial differential operator [Formula: see text]-Laplacian, and a multivalued term represented by Clarke’s generalized gradient. First, we apply a surjectivity result for multivalued pseudomonotone operators to examine the existence of weak solutions under mild hypotheses. Then, a comparison theorem is delivered, and a convergence result, which reveals the asymptotic behavior of solution when the parameter (heat transfer coefficient) tends to infinity, is obtained. Finally, we establish a continuous dependence result of solution to the boundary value problem on the data.

Suppose that [Formula: see text] is a homogeneous constant coefficient strongly hyperbolic partial differential operator on [Formula: see text] and that [Formula: see text] is a characteristic hyperplane. Suppose that in a conic neighborhood of the conormal variety of [Formula: see text], the characteristic variety of [Formula: see text] is the graph of a real analytic function [Formula: see text] with [Formula: see text] identically equal to zero or the maximal possible value [Formula: see text]. Suppose that the source function [Formula: see text] is compactly supported in [Formula: see text] and piecewise smooth with singularities only on [Formula: see text]. Then the solution of [Formula: see text] with [Formula: see text] for [Formula: see text] is uniformly bounded on [Formula: see text]. Typically when [Formula: see text] on the conormal variety, the sup norm of the jump in the gradient of [Formula: see text] across [Formula: see text] grows linearly with [Formula: see text].

Thick wall structures are usually applied at a highly reduced frequency. It is crucial to study the refined dynamic modeling of a thick plate, as it is directly related to the dynamic mechanical characteristics of an engineering structure or device, elastic wave scattering and dynamic stress concentration, and motion stability and dynamic control of a distributed parameter system. In this paper, based on the partial differential operator theory, an exact elasto-dynamics theory without assumptions for bending vibrations is presented by using the formal solution proposed by Boussinesq–Galerkin, and its dynamic equations are obtained under appropriate gauge conditions. The exact plate theory is then compared with other theories of plates. Since the derivation of the dynamic equation is conducted without any prior assumption, the proposed dynamic equation of plates is more exact and can be applied to a wider frequency range and greater thickness.

Abstract Objectives In this paper, we present and employ symbolic Maple software algorithm for solving initial value problems (IVPs) of partial differential equations (PDEs). From the literature, the proposed algorithm exhibited a great significant in solving partial differential equation arises in applied sciences and engineering. Results The implementation include computing partial differential operator (), Greens function () and exact solution () of the given IVP. We also present syntax, , to apply the partial differential operator to verify the solution of the given IVP obtained from . Sample computations are presented to illustrate the maple implementation.

We prove a Lusin type theorem for a certain class of linear partial differential operators G(D), reducing to [1, Theorem 1] when G(D) is the gradient. Moreover, we describe the structure of the set {G(D)f = F}, under assumptions of non-integrability on F, in terms of lower dimensional rectifiability and superdensity. Applications to Maxwell type system and to multivariable Cauchy–Riemann system are provided.

On a connected, oriented, smooth Riemannian manifold without boundary we consider a real scalar field whose dynamics is ruled by [Formula: see text], a second-order elliptic partial differential operator of Laplace type. Using the functional formalism and working within the framework of algebraic quantum field theory and of the principle of general local covariance, first we construct the algebra of locally covariant observables in terms of equivariant sections of a bundle of smooth, regular polynomial functionals over the affine space of the parametrices associated to [Formula: see text]. Subsequently, adapting to the case in hand a strategy first introduced by Hollands and Wald in a Lorentzian setting, we prove the existence of Wick powers of the underlying field, extending the procedure to smooth, local and polynomial functionals and discussing in the process the regularization ambiguities of such procedure. Subsequently we endow the space of Wick powers with an algebra structure, dubbed E-product, which plays in a Riemannian setting the same role of the time-ordered product for field theories on globally hyperbolic spacetimes. In particular, we prove the existence of the E-product and we discuss both its properties and the renormalization ambiguities in the underlying procedure. As the last step, we extend the whole analysis to observables admitting derivatives of the field configurations and we discuss the quantum Møller operator which is used to investigate interacting models at a perturbative level.

AbstractA filtered subspace iteration for computing a cluster of eigenvalues and its accompanying eigenspace, known as “FEAST”, has gained considerable attention in recent years. This work studies issues that arise when FEAST is applied to compute part of the spectrum of an unbounded partial differential operator. Specifically, when the resolvent of the partial differential operator is approximated by the discontinuous Petrov–Galerkin (DPG) method, it is shown that there is no spectral pollution. The theory also provides bounds on the discretization errors in the spectral approximations. Numerical experiments for simple operators illustrate the theory and also indicate the value of the algorithm beyond the confines of the theoretical assumptions. The utility of the algorithm is illustrated by applying it to compute guided transverse core modes of a realistic optical fiber.

We present results on existence and positivity of solutions for a linear Boltzmann transport equation used for example in radiotherapy applications and more generally in charged particle transports. Therein, some differential cross-sections, that is, kernels of collision integral operators, may become hyper-singular. These collision operators need to be approximated for analytical and numerical treatments. Here, we present an approximation leading to pseudo-differential operators. The final approximation, for which the existence and positivity of solutions is shown, is an integro-partial differential operator which is known as Continuous Slowing Down Approximation (CSDA).
