The greenhouse thrips, Heliothrips haemorrhoidalis is a quarantine pest of kiwifruit. There is a need for reliable information on its phenology in kiwifruit orchards to inform the development of new management options. Numbers of larval, pupal and adult greenhouse thrips were counted on leaves of the two main kiwifruit cultivars Actinidia chinensis var. deliciosa (‘Hayward’) at two sites at different times and A. chinensis var. chinensis ‘Zesy002’ at one site. Greenhouse thrips were also counted on leaves of shelter tree species Cryptomeria japonica, and other plants present on kiwifruit orchards, blackberry (Rubus fruticosus s.l.), barberry (Berberis glaucocarpa), and wineberry (Aristotelia serrata) across a number of sites at different times. There was a strong seasonal pattern to the phenology of greenhouse thrips and it was relatively synchronous for all the host plants surveyed. In general, number of greenhouse thrips on foliage increased from January to peak in April or May before declining in late autumn or winter and remaining low until the following January or February. The phenology of greenhouse thrips followed the same seasonal pattern for a variety of host plants found on kiwifruit orchards at sites in the Bay of Plenty across two two-year time periods. Therefore, host species does not appear to be a factor affecting the phenology of thrips. Other, non-host factors such as microclimate may be important drivers of phenology but they require further study. The consistency of the seasonal pattern of relative abundance means that there is a well-defined window to target for thrips management.

The results of long-term entomological observations at nurseries and in the collection greenhouse of PABSI are presented. The species composition of pests in the collections of open and closed ground of flower and ornamental plants in thePolar-AlpineBotanical gardenwas determined. The dominant invertebrates in nurseries are: Deroceras reticulatum Mtill., Eriophyes padi (Nal), Macrosiphum rosae L., Philaenus spumarius L., Gonioctena quinquepunctata F., Gonioctena pallida L., in greenhouses - Brevipalpus obovatus Donn., Neomyzus circumflexus Buckt., Myzodes persicae Sulz., Heliothrips haemorrhoidalis Bouche. Long-term observations of the state of flower and ornamental plants in greenhouses have shown that not only the species composition changes, but also the status of pests. An important role in the formation of the artificial biocenosis of the greenhouse is played by the food preferences of phytophages. Regular surveys revealed the presence of pests on plants of 41 families. The distribution of plants by the degree of pest population depending on the life form is presented. The most actively populated by the species of tree and shrub groups. The presented species composition of pests of flower and ornamental plants of open and closed ground can not be considered definitively studied, since changes in the trophic relationships of pests were noted during the study period.

Heliothrips longisensibilis sp. n. is described from the tropical regions of southern China, Yunnan and Hainan, based on morphology and data from mitochondrial and nuclear genes. However, specimens that are identical in colour and structure are reported from northern Brazil, and this is presumably the area of origin of this new species. The area of origin within South America of the Greenhouse Thrips, Heliothrips haemorrhoidalis, is discussed and remains in doubt. An identification key to the four species of Heliothrips is provided.

This thrips was described by Bouché in 1833 from specimens taken from a greenhouse in Europe as Thrips haemorrhoidalis. Packard described this species for the first time from this country in 1870 and called it the greenhouse thrips. This thrips appears in the Common Names of Insects approved by the Entomological Society of America as the greenhouse thrips, Heliothrips haemorrhoidalis (Bouché). This document is EENY-075 (originally published as DPI Entomology Circular No. 64), one of a series of Featured Creatures from the Entomology and Nematology Department, Florida Cooperative Extension Service, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, University of Florida.

The leaf preference of larvae, pupae and adults of Heliothrips haemorrhoidalis (Buche) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), a serious pest of several ornamental plants, were studied on Viburnum tinus. Leaves were sampled for thrips from the base, middle and distal end of viburnum twigs at weekly intervals from April 11 to September 15, 2000. The population of this thrips was observed at high levels of between 10 to 76 thrips per leaf, till the middle of June when it sharply declined to zero, probably due to high temperatures. Higher populations developed on the basal than on the middle leaves. The lowest populations were recorded on the distal leaves. The predator Orius vicinus (Ribaut) (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) was recorded in low numbers and therefore its effect on thrips populations was considered negligible.
