<p>People tolerate different levels of risk from different hazards in their day-to-day life. Perceptions of risks and the amount of risk mitigation people desire for different hazards vary. Previous research shows that the psychometric properties of different hazards predict the level of risk people tolerate for various hazards, but not for earthquakes. Risk tolerance is likely to also be affected by factors other than the psychometric properties of hazards. This research tested how earthquakes score on psychometric risk properties compared to five other hazards, and aimed to replicate previous research on the risk factors predicting risk tolerance. Secondly, the research aimed to test if other factors, namely framing effects, risk perception and fatalistic thinking predict risk tolerance for earthquakes. In Study 1, participants from Wellington, New Zealand (N = 139) rated six different hazards (nuclear power, smoking, alcohol, driving, flying and earthquakes) on several risk characteristics and measures of risk tolerance. The results showed that the different hazards were perceived differently in terms of risk tolerance and that participants thought different risk mitigation actions were appropriate for the six hazards. Factor analysis showed that factors derived from risk characteristics did not predict risk tolerance. Study 2 (N = 173) assessed the effects of framing messages, risk perception and fatalism on risk tolerance (judgments about the firmness of the legislation; willingness to pay tax) and judgments about who should pay. The frames had an effect on participants’ concern about the risk, but did not affect the other measures. Generally participants thought that the Government should pay for strengthening buildings, however, those participants who perceived damage as preventable (fatalism measure) thought that private owners should pay for strengthening.</p>

This study aims to investigate the effects of inulin and fructooligosaccharides (FOS) supplementation on the viability, storage stability, and in vitro gastrointestinal tolerance of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum in different sugar systems using 24 h growth and 10 days survival studies at 37 °C, inulin, and FOS (0%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%, 3% and 4%) supplementation in 2%, 3%, and 4% glucose, fructose, lactose, and sucrose systems. Based on the highest percentage increase in growth index, sucrose and lactose were more suitable sugar substrates for inulin and FOS supplementation. In survival studies, based on cell viability, inulin supplementation showed a better protective effect than FOS in 3% and 4% sucrose and lactose systems. Four selected sucrose and lactose systems supplemented with inulin and FOS were used in a 12-week storage stability study at 4 °C. Inulin (3%, 4%) and FOS (2%, 4%) supplementation in sucrose and lactose systems greatly enhanced the refrigerated storage stability of L. plantarum. In the gastrointestinal tolerance study, an increase in the bacterial survival rate (%) showed that the supplementation of FOS in lactose and sucrose systems improved the storage viability of L. plantarum. Both inulin and FOS supplementation in sucrose and lactose systems improved the hydrophobicity, auto-aggregation, co-aggregation ability of L. plantarum with Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis.

Salt stress is the most significant abiotic stress that can severely limit crop growth and productivity. This problem gets worse in the context of climate change. The Knowledge of genetic pool behavior under such environmental constraints is imperative for growing and research. Here, we tested salt stress tolerance in six barley varieties (‘Amira’, ‘Oussama’, ‘Tamellalet’, ‘Adrar’, ‘Taffa’, and ‘Laanaceur’). To this end, a set of biochemical parameters (chlorophylls, proline, sodium, potassium levels and K+/Na+ ratio) were measured. Salt constraint significantly reduced chlorophyll content and K+/Na+ but resulted in high records of proline and Na+. Our outcomes show that treatment was the main variability since it explained more than 75% in data variability followed by variety effect. Wide variabilities were found among varieties for the measured parameters. Higher proline levels and K+/Na+ were found in ‘Adrar’, ‘Tamellalet’ and ‘Taffa’. These two later varieties also displayed a higher record of K+. Lower Na+ values were recorded in ‘Laanaceur’, ‘Taffa’, and ‘Tamellalet’, indicating their relative resistance against salt stress. In contrast, ‘Oussama’ and ‘Amira’ were relatively salt-sensitive due to their higher Na+ and lowered K+/Na+ and proline content. Resistant varieties could represent a good background for breeding for barley salt tolerance.

Abstract Background Tea is an important plantation crop in India and world. Introduction of fertilisers and pesticides for better production polluted tea garden soils. Phosphates in agricultural soils are converted into soluble forms by phosphate solubilising microorganisms (PSMs). Consortium of PSM having high tolerance level is an attractive option for bioremediation of degraded tea plantation soils. This research initiative was to isolate PSM from tea plantation soil and detect their tolerance against pesticide, antibiotic and antifungal. Results Isolated consortia from organic and inorganic tea plantation soils of Darjeeling showing halo was considered for tolerance study. Phorate was most and Deltamethrin was the least tolerant pesticide for the isolated PSM consortia. So, Phorate may be considered as most used or most accumulated pesticide. Erythromycin was most and Ofloxacin was the least tolerant antibiotic while Fluconazole was most and Itraconazole was the least tolerant antifungal agent for the isolated PSM consortia. It was noted that there was no or partial inhibition of PSM growth by some pesticide, antibiotic and antifungal agents. In all the three tolerance studies it was observed that there is no relation between collection sites but in all the assays average inhibition zones were more in organic plantations than inorganic plantations. Conclusions Thus, it may be said that inorganic practice induces tolerance to microbes. So, other than cultural practice use of chemicals, micro-ecosystem and antibiosis exhibited by microbes do play a role in conferring tolerance.
