Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the concept of the author’s method of fatigue properties assessment of polymer composite structures, especially structures having nodes of concentrated force introduction (NCFI) using fatigue test data of coupons of similar composites and the ratio of their structural stress rate factors. Design/methodology/approach Basing on fatigue properties of pure composite shells coupons subjected to cyclic loads, and basing on the static strength difference between pure composite shells and shells having the structure affected by NCFI – (considered here as not only a manner of load introduction but also a kind of structural discontinuity), a method of relative fatigue properties reduction (RFPR) was developed. In the RFPR evaluation process, the author used the results of experiments on a special type of an NCFI named “a labyrinth non-adhesive node of concentrated force introduction” (LNA-NCFI) applied in certain composite gliders for fitting glider wings with the fuselage and also referred to design directives relating to primary structure of composite gliders, which are presented in the form of lightness factors linking stress with a structural mass. Findings The result of RFPR method application matched well with the results of fatigue tests of the LNA-NCFI type of a NCFI. The RFPR method may significantly facilitate the estimation of fatigue life of a structure with a structural discontinuity or an NCFI. Practical implications The RFPR method may significantly facilitate the estimation of fatigue life of a structure with a structural discontinuity or an NCFI. Originality/value The paper presents a proposal of a novel simplified method for fatigue life estimation of composite structures having a kind of structural discontinuity or an NCFI.

Abstract. The Tazones Lighthouse slope shows different active mass movements affecting an area of 70.000 m2 of the Cantabrian Coast (N Spain), characterized by almost vertical rocky cliffs developed on Jurassic rocks: alternating marl, sandstone and limestone with three main stratigraphic and structural discontinuity families. Between June 2018 and May 2020, 22 monthly monitoring campaigns have been carried out to measure the displacement of 38 control points, located between 95–110 masl. The total station monitoring has been complemented by ortophoto analysis and detailed digital terrain models (DTM) from two drone flights. Since the beginning of the 3D monitoring, about the 50 % of the markers moved more than 1 m, one of them exceeding 15 m. Detailed DTM has shown that the increased activity is controlled by the discontinuities. There is an extraordinary correlation between displacement acceleration and precipitation and soil moisture: the largest displacements have occurred after 2 periods of intense rain (January and October–November 2019, with a maximum 24-hour precipitation of 64.5 mm and 82.1 mm, respectively, and soil moisture values higher than 90 %). This represents an exceptional opportunity to analyse in real time the Jurassic cliffs retreat of the Cantabrian Coast, a question that remained not quantified.

Abstract This corpus‑based paper explores the history and present status of the contrast between noun‑dependent that‑clauses and ‘complex’ gerunds containing their own subjects. With seven of the fifteen nouns under scrutiny, the emergence of the that‑clause either follows that of the gerund or the two complement types emerge at about the same time. This suggests that we will have to qualify the general assumption that since the eighteenth century English has promoted non‑finite subordinate clauses at the expense of finite ones. More crucially, with by far most of the nouns investigated, the that‑clause has gained much further ground over the last few centuries, with American English spearheading this development since the early nineteenth century. In line with the Complexity Principle, the grammatical environments favouring the more explicit that‑clause over the complex gerund include subject complexity and different types of structural discontinuity. Intriguingly, however, the easy‑to‑process there‑clause containing the nouns in question is also found to favour the that‑clause at the expense of the complex gerund.

Abstract This paper presents the impact of selected essential aspects of geological structure on the state of slope stability as assessed by changes in the safety factor (SF). The engineering geological slope features that were analysed include: (i) changes in soil cohesion and internal friction angle, (ii) presence of a weak soil layer and its span, (iii) structural discontinuity (i.e. fault), (iv) soil permeability properties and water conditions (i.e. groundwater level, long and heavy rainfall). A certain scheme of slope stability calculations has been proposed for a case involving complex geological conditions. The numerical modelling of a hypothetic slope was performed using the shear strength reduction method based on the finite element method.
