The aims of this study were to investigate the effect of gelatin coating on the mechanical property of the polypropylene (PP) composites by the addition of Multi-walled nanotube (MWNT) and gelatin coated carbon fibers. The morphology of surface of carbon fiber filament on the fracture surface was examined by field-emission scanning electronic microscopy (FE-SEM). The Iosipescu shear test was done to determine the ultimate shear strength of the PP reinforced with MWNT/gelatin composite layer coated carbon fibers. The gelatin coated carbon fibers resulted in an increase in the ultimate shear strength compared to plain carbon fibers. In addition, the ultimate shear strength was improved through the addition of MWNTs with the gelatin. Also, with gelatin acting as a binder, flying CNT particles could be minimized.

A modified test fixture to measure the shear properties of composite laminates was designed and manufactured based upon Iosipescu shear test method. Tests on interlaminar shear propertis of T300/BMI composite laminates were conducted according to ASTM D 5379 test standard. Interlaminar shear stress/strain curves and shear failure modes were obtained. The test results showed that the modified shear test fixture and test method were effective in measuring the shear properties of composite laminates.

Bone material is very complex in nature due to its anisotropic and hierarchical structure. Bone is weaker in shear as compared to tension and compression therefore shear properties of bone material are important to find out. Many researchers have applied different techniques to find out shear properties of bone material but these techniques either require such type of bone specimens which are difficult to prepare or provides limited information about the shear properties. Iosipescu shear test method has been applied in the present work to find out locational variation in shear properties of cortical bone. This technique seems to be very effective for the case of bone material and require less effort as compared to the other techniques applied by the other researchers in the previous reports.

Abstract The mechanical treatment of wood in a refiner involves a complex combination of shear and compression forces. To obtain more knowledge on this process, the possibility of using an apparatus based on the Iosipescu shear test device to measure the behaviour of wood under a combined shear and compression load was tested. In this new apparatus, different combinations of shear and compression load were achieved by different rotations of the shear test device itself. Numerical simulations of the combined shear and compression test were carried out and compared with experimental data to verify the reliability of the modified device as applied to wood. It was concluded that the new apparatus is suitable for applying different combinations of shear and compression load in testing wood samples. However, finite element analysis showed that with the use of homogeneous material in the model, the level of strain reached would be 10-fold smaller. This fact is probably due to the honeycomb structure of the wood cells, which allows for different local deformation that could not be represented by the continuous material used in the model.
