AbstractThe physics of interacting nuclear spins in solids is well interpreted within the nuclear spin temperature concept. A common approach to cooling the nuclear spin system is adiabatic demagnetization of the initial, optically created, nuclear spin polarization. Here, the selective cooling of 75As spins by optical pumping followed by adiabatic demagnetization in the rotating frame is realized in a nominally undoped GaAs/(Al,Ga)As quantum well. The lowest nuclear spin temperature achieved is 0.54 μK. The rotation of 6 kG strong Overhauser field at the 75As Larmor frequency of 5.5 MHz is evidenced by the dynamic Hanle effect. Despite the presence of the quadrupole induced nuclear spin splitting, it is shown that the rotating 75As magnetization is uniquely determined by the spin temperature of coupled spin-spin and quadrupole reservoirs. The dependence of heat capacity of these reservoirs on the external magnetic field direction with respect to crystal and structure axes is investigated.

Acute ischemic stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Therapeutic hypothermia has long been considered as one of the most robust neuroprotective strategies. Although the neuroprotective effects of hypothermia have only been confirmed in patients with global cerebral ischemia after cardiac arrest and in neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, establishing standardized protocols and strictly controlling the key parameters may extend its application in other brain injuries, such as acute ischemic stroke. In this review, we discuss the potential neuroprotective effects of hypothermia, its drawbacks evidenced in previous studies, and its potential clinical application for acute ischemic stroke especially in the era of reperfusion. Based on the different conditions between bench and bedside settings, we demonstrate the importance of vascular recanalization for neuroprotection of hypothermia by analyzing numerous literatures regarding hypothermia in focal cerebral ischemia. Then, we make a thorough analysis of key parameters of hypothermia and introduce novel hypothermic therapies. We advocate in favor of the process of clinical translation of intra-arterial selective cooling infusion in the era of reperfusion and provide insights into the prospects of hypothermia in acute ischemic stroke.

To meet the demand for greater fuel efficiency in passenger vehicles, various strategies are employed to increase the power density of light-duty SI engines, with attendant thermal or system efficiency increases. One approach is to incorporate higher-performance alloys for critical engine components. These alloys can have advantageous thermal or mechanical properties at higher temperatures, allowing for components constructed from these materials to meet more severe pressure and temperature demands, while maintaining durability. Advanced alloys could reduce the need for charge enrichment to protect certain gas-path components at high speed and load conditions, permit more selective cooling to reduce heat-transfer losses, and allow engine downsizing, while maintaining performance, by achieving higher cylinder temperatures and pressures. As a first step in investigating downsizing strategies made possible through high-performance alloys, a GT-Power model of a 4-cylinder 1.6L turbocharged direct-injection SI engine was developed. The model was tuned and validated against experimental dynamometer data collected from a corresponding engine. The model was then used to investigate various operating strategies for increasing power density. Results from these investigations will provide valuable insight into how new materials might be utilized to meet the needs of future light-duty engines and will serve as the basis for a more comprehensive investigation using more-detailed thermo-mechanical modeling.
