AbstractNew methods for defect analysis can lead to improved interpretation of experimental data and thus better understanding of material properties. Although transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has been used to study defects for many decades, interpretive ambiguities can arise for cases that seem simple or even trivial. Using geometric phase analysis (GPA), an image processing procedure, we show that an apparent simple line defect in pyrite has an entirely different character. It appears to be a b = ½[100] edge dislocation as viewed in a [001] high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) image, but the measured ux and uy displacements are asymmetric, which is inconsistent with a simple line dislocation. Instead, the defect is best understood as a terminating {101} marcasite slab in pyrite. The simulated HRTEM image based on this model reproduces the defect contrast and illustrates the power of GPA analysis for (1) avoiding potential pitfalls of misinterpreting apparently simple defects in HRTEM images, (2) detecting differences in elastic properties at the atomic scale, and (3) providing data for the positions of atom columns, thereby facilitating the construction of structure models for complex defects.

The two-dimensional problem of an elliptic inclusion embedded into an anisotropic magneto-electro-elastic solid is studied. Based on the Stroh formalism combined with the technique of conformal mapping and the method of analytical continuation, general solutions for the stress and deformations in the entire domain are obtained when a generalized line force and a generalized line dislocation is located at a point outside, inside, or on the interface of an elliptical inclusion. Comparisons with some related solutions show that the present solutions are valid and general.

The Green’s function for an anisotropic elastic half-space that is bonded to a thin elastic material of different anisotropy subject to a line force and a line dislocation is presented. Also presented is the Green’s function for two different anisotropic elastic half-spaces that are bonded to a thin elastic material of different anisotropy subject to a line force and a line dislocation in one of the half-spaces. The thickness h of the thin layer is assumed to be small compared with a reference length. Thus, instead of finding the solution in the thin layer and imposing the continuity conditions at the interface(s), we derive and apply effective boundary conditions for the interface between the layer and the body that take into account the existence of the layer.

An analytical solution of the problem of a cylindrically anisotropic tube which contains a line dislocation is presented in this study. The state space formulation in conjunction with the eigenstrain theory is proved to be a feasible and systematic methodology to analyze a tube with the existence of dislocations. The state space formulation which expediently groups the displacements and the cylindrical surface traction can construct a governing differential matrix equation. By using Fourier series expansion and the well developed theory of matrix algebra, the asymmetrical solutions are not only explicit but also compact in form. The dislocation considered in this study is a kind of mixed dislocation which is the combination of edge dislocations and a screw dislocation and the dislocation line is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the tube. The degeneracy of the eigen relation and the technique to determine the inverse of a singular matrix are thoroughly discussed, so that the general solutions can be applied to the case of isotropic tubes, which is one of the novel features of this research. The results of isotropic problems, which are belong to the general solutions, are compared with the well-established expressions in the literature. The satisfied correspondences of these comparisons indicate the validness of this study. A cylindrically orthotropic tube is also investigated as an example and the numerical results for the displacements and tangential stress on the outer surface are displayed. The effects on surface stresses due to the existence of a dislocation appear to have a characteristic of localized phenomenon.
