Background: Fibromyalgia is a chronic and complex disease whose management by patients requires a high level of commitment. Patient empowerment therefore represents an important milestone in chronic disease treatment and control. We explored the impact of a peer social support network from the perspective of women with fibromyalgia. Methods: A generic qualitative design was proposed for the study, for which women who had been diagnosed with fibromyalgia were purposefully selected. Six semi-structured interviews were conducted, and the collected data were thematically analysed. Results: Three key themes emerged regarding the peer social support network: (1) empowerment (facilitating acceptance of the diagnosis and acting as a source of information); (2) effects on well-being and quality of life (attenuated the stigma, improved physical well-being, provided emotional support and was a socialization medium); and (3), valuable aspects (transmitted feelings of being understood and listened to and increased personal feelings of satisfaction). Conclusions: A peer social support network for women with fibromyalgia exerts positive effects on their physical, mental, and social well-being and empowers them to better manage their disease. Healthcare for women with fibromyalgia should include strategies that connect them through peer social support networks.

Abstract BackgroundExamining the determinants of adolescent’s physical activity (PA) and how they may differ according to the intersection of gender and family socioeconomic status (SES) can support the development of tailored interventions to more effectively promote adolescents’ PA. This study explored how the influence of psychosocial, behavioural and environmental determinants on adolescent’s PA differed according to gender and family SES. MethodsThis study used data from the Dutch survey Health Monitor Youth 2015. Adolescents (n=9,068) aged 12-19 were included for the study. The associations between psychosocial, behavioural, and environmental determinants and PA (days per week engaging in at least one hour of PA) were examined with multilevel linear regression analysis. Potential interactions between these determinants, gender and family SES were explored.ResultsOn average, adolescents engaged in at least one hour of PA for 4,2 days per week. Poor self-perceived health, low peer social support, and a weak connection with the environment were all associated with lower PA in adolescents. Daily smoking, cannabis use, risk of problematic gaming and social media use, as well as lack of daily consumption of fruit, vegetables, water and breakfast were associated with lower PA, whereas binge drinking was not. Interactions revealed that poor self-perceived health was associated with lower PA in adolescents from moderate- and high-SES families, but not in low-SES adolescents, whereas cannabis use was only associated with lower PA amongst low-SES adolescents. Low peer social support was associated with lower PA across all groups, but it was most strongly associated with lower PA amongst male adolescents from low-SES families than in other subgroups. Amongst low-SES males, low peer social support was associated with a 1.47 reduction in days engaging in sufficient PA, compared with a 0.69 reduction for high-SES males.ConclusionsThis study identified several psychosocial, behavioural and environmental determinants that can be targeted to potentially increase adolescent’s PA. We also found that correlates of PA differed according to the intersection of gender and family SES. Our findings suggest that PA interventions should be tailored according to gender and SES to address the specific needs, barriers and facilitators of different subgroups.

Introduction: Childhood adversities have been shown to increase psychopathology risk, including depression. However, the specific impact of childhood emotional neglect on later depression has been understudied. Moreover, few studies have investigated relational protective factors that may offset the risk of depression for children who experienced emotional neglect. Analyzing data (n = 3,265) from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) study, a longitudinal birth cohort of children born to pregnant women residing in Avon, UK from 1990 to 1992, we assessed the prospective relationship between childhood emotional neglect and depressive symptoms in late adolescence, and tested whether peer social support in mid-adolescence moderates this relationship. Methods: Childhood emotional neglect, defined as the absence of parental attention and support, was measured across seven assessments from age 8 to 17.5. Peer social support was measured at age 15. Depressive symptoms were measured at age 18. We analyzed the associations between emotional neglect and depressive symptoms, and between peer support and depressive symptoms, and also tested interactive effects of peer support on the association between emotional neglect and depressive symptoms. Results: Higher levels of emotional neglect were associated with increased depressive symptoms at 18. Conversely, strong peer social support was associated with reduced depressive symptoms, though no significant interaction with emotional neglect was detected. Conclusion: Although childhood emotional neglect is a risk factor for later depression, our results suggest that strong peer social support at age 15 may generally reduce the risk of depressive symptoms by the time children reach late adolescence. Fostering strong peer support in youth may help offset depression risk for all youth, even among those who have experienced emotional neglect.

The growing number of adolescents engaging in entrepreneurship indicates they are fond of what they do. Support from their families and friends serves as an important factor in such entrepreneurial behavior. This study aims to investigate the contribution of parental and peer social support in shaping intrinsic motivation in entrepreneurial adolescents. The respondents of this study included 64 adolescents of 18-21 years old who were entrepreneurial in the city of Bandung. The data were collected through a social support and intrinsic motivations scale which then analyzed using the multiple regression analysis techniques. The results indicate a positive relationship between parental and peer social support with the intrinsic motivations of entrepreneurial adolescents. The two variables together affect intrinsic motivation by 25.5%. Thus the social support received by entrepreneurial youth spurs intrinsic motivation that will give birth to entrepreneurial behavior. This research concludes that adolescents with social support possess such positive feelings as happiness, confidence, and personal autonomy that encourage the emergence of entrepreneurial behavior.

This research is motivated by the finding of students who are still confused in choosing a major to enter higher education. The purpose of this study was to describe the effect of peer social support on student career planning. This type of research is a qualitative descriptive study, using a natural setting approach, which places more emphasis on what the informants experience naturally. Determination of informants in this study using purposive sampling method. Collecting data using observation, interview, documentation, and tri-accounting techniques. Data analysis uses the Miles Hurberman method, in which Miles Huberman divides 3 stages in data analysis, namely data reduction, display data, and conclusion drawing / verification. The results showed that there was an effect of peer social support on student career planning, it was shown from emotional support, support, appreciation, information support.
