Among the main weeds with difficult to control in the sugarcane fields can be cited purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.). This specie was observed in the seed bank in sugarcane fields harvested with or without burning. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of herbicides in pre-sprouted seedlings (PSS) of sugarcane in the control of C. rotundus and other weeds. The work was carried out in the field, in a randomized complete block design, and four replications. The treatments corresponded to the herbicides applied in pre-planting: sulfentrazone (800 g a.i. ha-1), diclosulam (193.17 g a.i. ha-1), imazapic (133 g a.i. ha-1) and imazapyr (500 g a.e. ha-1); post-planting: halosulfuron (112.5 g a.i. ha-1), ethoxysulfuron (135 g a.i. ha-1), MSMA (1,975 g a.i. ha-1) and 2,4-D (1,340 g a.e. ha-1); besides a control treatment weeding and another without weeding. The symptoms of injury on sugarcane plants, percentage of weed control, variables related to agronomic performance of sugarcane, and yield were evaluated. The herbicides diclosulam, imazapic, and imazapyr caused serious damage to the crop. The halosulfuron, ethoxysulfuron, MSMA, and 2,4-D did not cause symptoms of injury to sugarcane, however, the treatments had a reduced yield due to the low weed control. The sulfentrazone treatment obtained the second highest yield but with effective weed control (>70%) up to 45 days after planting. The best controls were obtained with pre-planting treatments; however, herbicide positioning studies should be performed in relation to PSS.

Abstract The Ichthys Field is located approximately 220 km north-west of the coast of mainland Western Australia and 820 km south-west of Darwin. Gas from the Ichthys Field undergoes processing on an offshore central processing facility (CPF) to dehydrate the gas and remove a Rich MEG phase and condensate. The dry gas is compressed and sent to Darwin via a gas export pipeline while the condensate and MEG are pumped to an interlinked floating production, storage, and offtake facility (FPSO) with hydrocarbon processing capabilities. The FPSO also features the world's largest offshore MEG regeneration system. An integrated chemical supply chain has been developed to deliver bulk chemicals from the vendor chemical supply base in Darwin to the offshore facilities. Delivery is facilitated by specially designed platform supply vessels (PSV) that carry bulk chemicals in dedicated storage tanks and transferred to the offshore facilities using bulk transfer hoses. This paper details aspects of the chemical supply chain and describes best practices that have been developed to manage the safe delivery of bulk chemicals from the chemical supplier to the operator.

: Chemical accidents can occur anywhere. The need for chemical management in Korea was realized following the 2012 Gumi hydrofluoric acid accident in 2012. The Chemicals Control Act was enacted in 2015. This system evaluates the risks (high, medium, low) and consequent safety management at all plants that handle hazardous chemical substances. However, the system was criticized as excessive when most plants were designated high-risk without considering their size. Thus, laboratories and hospitals handling very small quantities were subject to regulation. Accordingly, in 2021 Korea revised the system to include off-site consequence analyses and a Korean-style risk analysis. Plants handling very small quantities, such as laboratories and hospitals, were exempt from regulation. In this study, plating and paint manufacturing companies, which were classified as high-risk in the previous system, even though they were medium-size business plants, were re-evaluated as low-risk plants. In the Korean-style risk analysis, it is possible to see at a glance what is lacking in the plants, such as cooperation between local residents and local governments and the construction of safety facilities according to the type of accident scenario. The revised system is a reasonable regulation for medium business plants.

US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) approved algaecides and herbicides are frequently utilized to manage nuisance algae and aquatic macrophytes. However, there is limited information available on the effectiveness of these products for the management of starry stonewort. Thus, the goal of this research was to discern effective chemical control products for later growth stages of starry stonewort using mesocosm studies. Eleven treatments were evaluated using various combinations of four copper-based products, endothall, diquat, and carfentrazone – all with USEPA registrations for use in aquatic sites. To assess treatment efficacy, water quality, photophysiology, biomass changes, and bulbil viability were evaluated. Nine of the eleven treatments yielded lower dissolved oxygen concentrations and higher specific conductance when compared to the control. Photophysiological response varied by condition, but seven of eleven treatments resulted in significantly lower fluorescent and maximum fluorescent yield. Five of these also exhibited significantly lower average photosynthetic yields, with combination treatments resulting in more drastic decreases. Ten of the eleven treatments had significantly less biomass compared to the control when measured via wet weight; however, only four treatments were significant when measured via dry weight. Lastly, all conditions utilizing copper-based products significantly reduced bulbil viability while non-copper products had no impact.

Abstract The weed species Spermacoce densiflora DC. and Spermacoce verticillata L. have shown an increase in their occurrence in cultivated areas in the northeast region of Brazil, and field observations have reported their ineffective control with chemicals. This study aimed to evaluate the germination of S. densiflora and S. verticillata under constant (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35°C) and alternating temperatures (20–30°C) in dark and in constant light; the emergence of seedlings from seven sowing depths (0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 6 and 10 cm); the emergence of seedlings under five types of cover crop straw (Crotalaria juncea L., Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br., Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, Dolichos lablab L., and Cajanus cajan L.) and four amounts (nil and the average, half and twice the amount of straw produced in the field); and germination at different aqueous cover crop extract concentrations (0, 20, 40, 60 and 100%) to measure allelopathic potential of cover crop straw. The results showed that S. densiflora has positive photoblastic behavior. The alternating temperature provided the highest percentage of germination and germination speed index (GSI) for both species. S. densiflora and S. verticillata seedling emergence decreased with an increase in depth, with no germination at a depth of 10 cm. The presence of straw impaired the emergence of seedlings of S. densiflora and S. verticillata by delaying and even preventing germination from occurring. The gradual increase in the aqueous extract concentrations was accompanied by lower percentages of germination and GSI for S. densiflora and S. verticillata.
