The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of audit committee size, auditor tenure and KAP size on audit report lag with industry specialization auditors as moderating variables in publicly listed mining sector companies on the IDX. This research is a quantitative research using secondary data that is accessed from the website of the mining sector company. This study uses the criteria to determine the research sample, amounting to 31 companies. The method of analysis used logistic regression and residual test which was processed with SPSS. The results of the study: 1) the size of the audit committee has no effect on audit report lag; 2) audit tenure has no effect on audit report lag; 3) KAP size has an effect on audit report lag; 4) all independent variables simultaneously affect the audit report lag; 5) the moderating variable cannot moderate the effect of the independent variable on audit report lag.

More than half of U.S. public companies announce earnings before audit completion. We examine how accounting quality, as a measure of the ex-ante reliability of earnings, affects the decision to release earnings early. Using four proxies for accounting quality, we show that firms with higher accounting quality are more likely to release earnings before a completed audit, and that the association is stronger when market demand for timely earnings is high. We provide evidence that accounting quality remains important in the timing of earnings release even after controlling for other factors which affect earnings reliability, such as managerial ability, auditor tenure, and financial reporting problems in a prior period. Overall we emphasize the role of accounting quality in the complex process of when to release earnings relative to audit completion, and suggest that the importance of the audit in the earnings release decision varies based on firm-specific accounting quality.

This study addresses the international debate over whether the rotation of audit firms should be mandatory. Mandatory rotation rules have been adopted by the European Union, but these rules have not been established in the United States. Proponents of the policy believe that a long-tenure auditor-client relationship leads to the auditor building an excessive economic bond with the client which may then erode auditor independence. Motivated by this claim, I build a theoretical model that compares auditor incentives to issue independent reports under regimes with and without mandatory rotation. The model demonstrates conditions under which mandatory rotation could actually impair auditor independence, contrary to the popular view.

Purpose This study aims to investigate whether auditor tenure has a significant influence on accounting quality and whether investor protection moderates the effect of auditor tenure on accounting quality. Design/methodology/approach This study uses weighted least squares regression on a sample of 77,855 firm-year observations from 36 countries during the period 2010–2016. This study uses the absolute value of performance-matched discretionary accruals to measure financial reporting quality. Findings This study finds that a longer auditor tenure is associated with higher accounting quality, thus supporting the knowledge effect arguments. The results on the joint effect of investor protection and auditor tenure show evidence of the substitutive effect of investor protection, where the positive impact of auditor tenure on accounting quality is weaker in a high investor-protection environment. Practical implications These findings provide input for policy implications involving the auditing profession. Regulators may need to weigh the costs and benefits of mandatory audit rotation because country-level institutional factors influence auditing regulations and practices, as well as the auditors’ behaviors. Originality/value This study adds to the limited, albeit important, evidence on the joint effect of auditor tenure and country-level governance on accounting quality. The authors respond to the call by Brooks et al. (2017) for more evidence on the role of audits on financial reporting outcomes across various legal institutions for creating effective policies.

Purpose The Indian Companies Act 2013 mandated auditor rotations in the financial year 2018–2019. Similar regulations are being considered in many countries, based on the assumption that longer tenure is detrimental to audit quality; yet, the evidence from investigations of this assumption is inconclusive. This paper aims to examine the effect of moderating factors on the relation between audit quality and audit tenure, given the regulatory trend and the lack of consensus in extant literature. Design/methodology/approach This paper examines the relationship between audit quality and audit tenure among Indian firms from 2001 to 2015 and tests for moderating factors including auditor compensation, business group affiliation and chief executive officer (CEO) duality. Findings Contrary to the objective of mandatory rotations, this study finds that longer auditor tenure generally enhanced audit quality among Indian firms prior to mandatory rotations. However, for companies paying abnormally high compensation to auditors, this paper finds that longer tenure decreases audit quality, particularly if the firm is affiliated with a business group or firms where the CEO also serves as the board chair. Thus, the potential benefits of mandated shorter tenure appear to be confined to high-fee paying companies with a business group affiliation and/or a dual-role CEO. Originality/value This study is one of the first to examine conditioning factors that affect the relationship between audit quality and auditor tenure. Results suggest that regulations limiting auditor tenure would be beneficial only to the shareholders of a narrow group of firms; while for the majority of firms, limiting auditor tenure may actually be counter-productive.

The PCAOB mandated, over the objections of the large audit firms and others, that for fiscal years ending on or after December 15, 2017, the audit report shall include information about auditor tenure. In this paper we answer the call for academic research about “the impact and usefulness of the auditor tenure disclosure as it becomes implemented” from Franzel (2017). We use data from 2,718 firms in our analyses. We find that in the case of clients with long (short) auditor tenure, the proportion of shareholder votes not ratifying the auditor increased (decreased) after public disclosure of auditor tenure. Thus, it appears that public disclosure of auditor tenure influenced shareholder voting and sensitized shareholders to longer audit tenures.
