Poland is the largest European producer of goose, while goose breeding has become an essential and still increasing branch of the poultry industry. The most frequently bred goose is the White Kołuda® breed, constituting 95% of the country’s population, whereas geese of regional varieties are bred in smaller, conservation flocks. However, a goose’s genetic diversity is inaccurately explored, mainly because the advantages of the most commonly used tools are strongly limited in non-model organisms. One of the most accurate used markers for population genetics is single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP). A highly efficient strategy for genome-wide SNP detection is genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS), which has been already widely applied in many organisms. This study attempts to use GBS in 12 conservative goose breeds and the White Kołuda® breed maintained in Poland. The GBS method allowed for the detection of 3833 common raw SNPs. Nevertheless, after filtering for read depth and alleles characters, we obtained the final markers panel used for a differentiation analysis that comprised 791 SNPs. These variants were located within 11 different genes, and one of the most diversified variants was associated with the EDAR gene, which is especially interesting as it participates in the plumage development, which plays a crucial role in goose breeding.

Abstract Ice exhibits extraordinary structural variety in its polymorphic structures. The existence of a new form of diversity in ice polymorphism has recently been debated in both experimental and theoretical studies, questioning whether hydrogen-disordered ice can transform into multiple hydrogen-ordered phases, contrary to the known one-to-one correspondence between disordered ice and its ordered phase. Here we report a new high-pressure phase, ice XIX, which is a second hydrogen-ordered phase of ice VI. This is the first discovery to demonstrate that disordered ice undergoes different manners of hydrogen ordering, which are thermodynamically controlled by pressure in the case of ice VI. Such multiplicity can appear in all disordered ice, and it widely provides a new research approach to deepen our knowledge, for example of the crucial issues of ice: the centrosymmetry of hydrogen-ordered configurations and potentially induced (anti-)ferroelectricity. Ultimately, this research opens up the possibility of completing the phase diagram of ice.

AbstractAlthough it is assumed that contamination in bacterial whole-genome sequencing causes errors, the influences of contamination on clustering analyses, such as single-nucleotide polymorphism discovery, phylogenetics, and multi-locus sequencing typing, have not been quantified. By developing and analyzing 720 Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella enterica, and Escherichia coli short-read datasets, we demonstrate that within-species contamination causes errors that confound clustering analyses, while between-species contamination generally does not. Contaminant reads mapping to references or becoming incorporated into chimeric sequences during assembly are the sources of those errors. Contamination sufficient to influence clustering analyses is present in public sequence databases.
