Abstract If the formation of central galaxies in dark matter haloes traces the assembly history of their host haloes, in haloes of fixed mass, central galaxy clustering may show dependence on properties indicating their formation history. Such a galaxy assembly bias effect has been investigated by Lin et al. (2016), with samples of central galaxies constructed in haloes of similar mass and with mean halo mass verified by galaxy lensing measurements, and no significant evidence of assembly bias is found from the analysis of the projected two-point correlation functions of early- and late-forming central galaxies. In this work, we extend the the investigation of assembly bias effect from real space to redshift (velocity) space, with an extended construction of early- and late-forming galaxies. We carry out halo occupation distribution modelling to constrain the galaxy-halo connection to see whether there is any sign of the effect of assembly bias. We find largely consistent host halo mass for early- and late-forming central galaxies, corroborated by lensing measurements. The central velocity bias parameters, which are supposed to characterise the mutual relaxation between central galaxies and their host haloes, are inferred to overlap between early- and late-forming central galaxies. However, we find a large amplitude of velocity bias for early-forming central galaxies (e.g. with central galaxies moving at more than 50% that of dark matter velocity dispersion inside host haloes), which may signal an assembly bias effect. A large sample with two-point correlation functions and other clustering measurements and improved modelling will help reach a conclusive result.

AbstractGas–liquid flows occur in many natural environments such as breaking waves, river rapids and human-made systems, including nuclear reactors and water treatment or conveyance infrastructure. Such two-phase flows are commonly investigated using phase-detection intrusive probes, yielding velocities that are considered to be directly representative of bubble velocities. Using different state-of-the-art instruments and analysis algorithms, we show that bubble–probe interactions lead to an underestimation of the real bubble velocity due to surface tension. To overcome this velocity bias, a correction method is formulated based on a force balance on the bubble. The proposed methodology allows to assess the bubble–probe interaction bias for various types of gas-liquid flows and to recover the undisturbed real bubble velocity. We show that the velocity bias is strong in laboratory scale investigations and therefore may affect the extrapolation of results to full scale. The correction method increases the accuracy of bubble velocity estimations, thereby enabling a deeper understanding of fundamental gas-liquid flow processes.

<p>In December 2018 and April 2019, two 3-unit cube satellites of the company Astrocast were launched into orbit. Both satellites are equipped with our low-cost single-frequency multi-GNSS payload board, which provides almost continuous on-board receiver solutions containing the position from GNSS code observations and the velocity from Doppler measurements. We make use of these independent observation types (positions and velocities) to identify and analyse systematic biases in the receiver solution. Therefore, we estimate the parameters of a dynamic orbit model using three different approaches: fitting the orbit model (1) to the positions only, (2) to the velocities only and (3) to both, positions and velocities.</p><p>After removing outliers, the position residuals from the position-only approach are at a level of about 5 m, the velocity residuals from the velocity-only approach at about 15 cm/s. When computing the positions with the velocity-only approach, however, the residuals are much larger and show a once-per revolution periodicity with amplitudes of up to 40 m. Besides that, we identify two offsets in the residuals which are independent of the observation type: a radial position bias of -3 m and an along-track velocity bias of -1.2 cm/s. Additionally, we observe two offsets which are dependent on the observation type: an along-track offset of 13 m in the position residuals when using the velocity-only approach and a radial offset of 1.3 cm/s in radial velocities when using the position-only approach.</p><p>The periodicity in radial and along-track direction is related to the orbit eccentricity and may be due to a general deficiency, when using velocities to estimate geometric orbit parameters. When comparing the orbits from the position-only and the velocity-only approach, we find an offset in the right ascension of the ascending node, which corresponds to a maximum cross-track position difference of 40 m at the equator. We show that this effect is caused by a periodic bias in the velocity solutions with a maximum at the poles. A possible cause for such a periodicity in the velocity solutions may be dynamic effects in the receiver tracking loops related to the LEO satellite velocity relative to the GNSS constellation, which can vary strongly within one revolution.</p><p>Our results show that both, the radial position offset and the along-track velocity offset are dependent on the altitude of the satellite and are likely to be caused by ionospheric refraction. The explanation for the along-track position offset and the along-track velocity offset, however, is not that obvious. We found that these two offsets are geometrically related and, thus, must have the same physical cause. Based on the combined position-and-velocity approach we demonstrate that they originate from a velocity bias rather than from a position bias. To explain the physical cause of such a radial velocity offset, we will study the ionospheric effects on GNSS code and Doppler measurements in more detail, where we use a 3D-ionosphere model and take also the altitude of the two satellites into account.</p>

Summary Rayleigh-wave phase-velocity tomography of southern Sweden is presented using ambient seismic noise at 36 stations (630 station pairs) of the Swedish National Seismic Network (SNSN). We analyze one year (2012) of continuous recordings to get the first crustal image based on the ambient-noise method in the area. Time-domain cross-correlations of the vertical component between the stations are computed. Phase-velocity dispersion curves are measured in the frequency domain by matching zero crossings of the real spectra of cross-correlations to the zero crossings of the zeroth-order Bessel function of the first kind. We analyze the effect of uneven source distributions on the phase-velocity dispersion curves and correct for the estimated velocity bias before tomography. To estimate the azimuthal source distribution to determine the bias, we perform inversions of amplitudes of cross-correlation envelopes in a number of period ranges. Then, we invert the measured and bias-corrected dispersion curves for phase-velocity maps at periods between 3 and 30 s. In addition, we investigate the effects of phase-velocity bias corrections on the inverted tomographic maps. The difference between bias corrected and uncorrected phase-velocity maps is small ($< 1.2 \%$), but the correction significantly reduces the residual data variance at long periods where the bias is biggest. To obtain a shear velocity model, we invert for a one-dimensional velocity profile at each geographical node. The results show some correlation with surface geology, regional seismicity and gravity anomalies in the upper crust. Below the upper crust, the results agree well with results from other seismological methods.

We explored the impact of baryonic effects (namely stellar and active galactic nuclei feedback) on the moments of pairwise velocity using the Illustris-TNG, EAGLE, cosmo-OWLS, and BAHAMAS suites of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. The assumption that the mean pairwise velocity of the gas component follows that of the dark matter is studied here at small separations, and we find that even at pair separations of 10–20 h−1Mpc, there is a 4–5% velocity bias. At smaller separations, it gets larger with varying strength depending on the sub-grid prescription. By isolating different physical processes, our findings suggest that the large-scale velocity bias is mainly driven by stellar rather than active galactic nuclei feedback. If unaccounted for, this velocity offset could possibly bias cosmological constraints from the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect in future cosmic microwave background (CMB) surveys. Furthermore, we examined how the first and the second moment of the pairwise velocity are affected by both the baryonic and the neutrino free-streaming effects for both the matter and gas components. For both moments, we were able to disentangle the effects of baryonic processes from those of massive neutrinos; and for pair separations below 20 h−1Mpc, we find that these moments of the pairwise velocity decrease with increasing neutrino mass. Our work thus sets out a way in which the pairwise velocity statistics can be utilised to constrain the summed mass of neutrinos from future CMB surveys and peculiar velocity surveys.
