On the Relation between Memory and Language from a Cultural-historical Perspective in Neurolinguistics

In this essay, we reflect about the relationship between memory and language, conceiving both as complex functional systems, developed along the human history and strongly influenced by culture. We give special emphasis to the mediating role of signs, mainly based on the (neuro)psychological principles postulated by Vygotsky and Luria, but also in dialogue with several authors from the fields of Linguistics, Philosophy of Language and Semiotics, among which Mikhail Bakhtin, Aleida Assmann, Augusto Ponzio and Susan Petrilli. Two data are presented in order to contribute to our reflection – the first is extracted of a dialogical episode with a subject diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and the second episode with an aphasic individual. In sum, we argue that the cultural-historical approach may provide a better understanding of the interdependent and constitutive nature of the relationship between language and memory. Memorias del arzobispado de Tarragona (siglos XII-XIII)

These pages explain the making of an episcopal identity story. The medieval archbishopric of Tarragona wove a specific memory on episcopal authority, that defined a sacred identity, linked to the first Peninsular Christianization and with singular mechanisms of power. This tradition of the episcopal see was constructed contemporary and reinforced in subsequent times. Some key elements of these memories were: the restoration of the late-Roman Church, the sacred nature of the seat and of some bishops, the vindication of metropolitan and ‘first’ see, the religious authority in the region and against other powers, the recognition of pontifical support and patronage, the links with the major political powers, the religious charismae and the features of lordly power. In short, the archbishop's power was supported by the tradition of the see and drew on a set of iconic images that became a story of legitimacy and authority. Resumen: El arzobispado medieval de Tarragona tejió una memoria sobre su autoridad, revestida de una identidad sagrada, que difundió los caracteres específicos de su potestad y de la realidad dominical. Las tradiciones sobre la sede tarraconense fueron establecidas durante los siglos xii y xiii, con aportaciones destacadas como la del prelado Benet de Rocabertí. Algunos elementos laudatorios y reivindicativos de sus mensajes fueron: la vinculada a la primera cristianización peninsular, la restauración de la Iglesia romana tardía, la reclamación de la primacía, la naturaleza sagrada de algunos obispos, la preminencia en la jurisdicción religiosa y dominical, el reconocimiento del apoyo y patrocinio pontificio y los carismas religiosos. En resumen, el poder del arzobispo se dotó de una ideología que se apoyó en un conjunto de imágenes icónicas al servició de una narrativa legitimadora y para la afirmación de los poderes y las proyecciones de la mitra. Las Historias que contamos

En este ensayo argumento que las memorias de la Revolución Sandinistas son imágenes del pasado que idealizan esa época y a la vez la desfamiliarizan. Esas memorias también hablan de otras historias que quizá no se expresan de forma articulada pero que nos ayudan a entender sociedades desiguales como la Nicaragüense. Narrar las memorias de la Revolución nos permite mantener esas narrativas en movimiento, proponiendo nuevos ejes desde donde entenderlas, con una mirada respetuosa y creativa. The stories we are toldAbstractIn this essay I argue that the memories of the Sandinista Revolution are images of the past that idealize and desfamiliarize that time. Those memories also touch on other stories, which might not express themselves in an articulated fashion, but which help us understand unequal societies, like the Nicaraguan. To narrate memories of the Revolution allow us to keep those narratives in movement, proposing new axis from where to understand them, through a respectful and creative gaze. Cuarentena, exilio y regreso: viaje, memoria y transición democrática en el cine documental argentino

ResumenEste trabajo se interesa en abordar la representación del itinerario de regreso a la tierra de origen del exiliado político a partir del film Cuarentena (Carlos Echeverría, 1984). A través del análisis de los procedimientos formales, narrativos y estilísticos, nos proponemos observar la problematización del sujeto protagónico, el diseño de su viaje de retorno y su memoria no unitaria, como parte de complejo del “regreso”, tanto en su dimensión individual encarnada en la figura del exiliado —en este caso Osvaldo Bayer–, como en su dimensión colectiva a partir de reinstauración del orden democrático. Memória e identidade: um estudo das trabalhadoras do Banco do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul – 1943-1945

Este artigo discute brevemente a questão da memória e da identidade e detémse na exposição de pesquisa realizada no final da década de 1990 que utilizou história oral e apoiou-se na memória das primeiras trabalhadoras que ingressaram no Banco do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul entre 1943-45, procurando construir a identidade do grupo em estudo. Abstract This article briefly argues the question of the memory and the identity and is lingered in the exposition of research carried through in the end of the decade of 1990 using verbal history, and it was supported in the memory of the first workers who had entered the BANRISUL between 1943-45, looking for to construct their identity of the group in study. Viva o Comunismo X Viva Cristo Rei: um estudo de recepção do anticomunismo católico a partir de fontes orais

O presente artigo analisa depoimentos de um pequeno grupo de padres gaúchos a respeito do anticomunismo católico. Procura explicar um denominador comum presente nas lembranças dos entrevistados: a relação direta entre comunismo e perseguição à Igreja no México e na Espanha, com especial referência ao caso do martírio do Padre Miguel Pró, no México, visto como um herói anticomunista. Abstract The current article analyzes statements by a small group of Roman Catholic priests from Rio Grande do Sul about catholic anti-communism. It intends to explain a common denominator among the memories of the group: the direct relationship between communism and persecution to the Church in Mexico and Spain, with special reference to the martyrdom of Father Miguel Pró in Mexico, seen as an anticommunist hero. Este artigo explora possibilidades em história oral, o desenvolvimento na contemporaneidade das ciências cognitivas e sua aproximação com histórias curtas. Essas direções podem ser fertilizadas pelo pesquisador nos estudos da memória, da narrativa e da oralidade. Este artigo trata do imaginário de crianças e adolescentes em situação de rua, numa perspectiva de longa duração, a partir do conto de fadas, em grupos focais, indo aos lugares onde esta população atua, dando preferência a entrevistas por comentário. Reúne correlações de variáveis de questionários estruturados, descrições de elementos culturais constituintes de seus quadros sociais de memória. Working from fairy tales, in focal groups, going to the places where this population acts, giving preference to interviews and comments; this work collects correlations of variables from structured questionnaires, descriptions of cultural elements constituents of the social frameworks of memory. A Síndrome de Wilkomirski: História falsificada

A utilização da memória pela História nos remete à questão da confiabilidade, e, com isso, “ao voto de confiança” (Ricoeur) à testemunha. Em contraste com as formas usuais de tentar impedir ou impor a memória, o interesse público contemporâneo por depoimentos pessoais tem levado a muitos casos de falsificação da memória, entre os quais o mais famoso é\ a história de “Wilkomirski”. O presente artigo se dedica às formas atuais de autovitimização, procura entender por que a maioria dos historiadores falhou em reconhecer a falsificação, por que mentir traz mais vantagens do que dizer a verdade, e qual a função do julgamento crítico como pré-requisito para a confiabilidade. Abstract The use of memory in History poses the question of its reliability and thus the “question of confidence” (Ricoeur) in the testimony. In contrast to traditional forms of prevention or prescription of memory, the current public interest in personal recollections comes up against many cases of falsification of memory, the most famous among them being the story of “Wilkomirski”. The author studies the contemporary fashion of self-victimization and discusses why most historians failed to recognize this falsification, why lying seems to offer more advantages than truth-telling, and which role critical judgment can play as a prerequisite of confidence.
