In the process of bra cup customization, the matching between bra cup surface and breast shape largely depends on the practical experience of designers. To achieve effective customization, this study proposes an inverse design method. This method prescribes the surface of the main test section and subsequently optimizes the corresponding shape of the bra cup, thus minimizing the supremum of pressure in the target region. The optimization framework is mainly based on the particle swarm optimization algorithm and Kriging surrogate model. The inner surface of the bra cup represents the study model, and the three-dimensional morphology of the bra cup is characterized by the free-form deformation. The result exhibits a reduction of 22.51% in the pressure of the design cup as compared to the body size cup. The developed method can contribute to the engineering and personalized customization of the bra cup, thus further improving the fitting of the bra cup.

Introduction Clinical observations of children with swallowing disorders using a traditional “sippy” or transitional drinking cup identified a need for a novel cup. Children with swallowing disorders are often unable to initiate the forces required to activate the cup and/or maintain suction pressure. Furthermore, fast flow rates can result in choking. Methods A new cup design tool is proposed using fluid-cup interactions to capture the changing geometry of the fluid during drinking. A Petri net formulation is integrated with standard fluid flow principles. A new parametric cup simulation provides visualization and direct implementation for microcontroller prototypes. A vent-based controller is developed and modeled for a novel transitional drinking cup design. A simulated pouring study is performed for water and a baseline liquid volume of 200 ml in the cup. The study varies rotation rates, initial volume, system control and desired flow rates. Results Volumetric flow rate curves over time are generated and compared in relation to a target flow rate. The simulation results show expected behavior for variations in cup parameters. Conclusion The new simulation model facilitates future dysphagia research through rapid prototyping by tuning cup geometry, liquid parameters and control signals to meet the varying needs of the users.

Aims This combined clinical and in vitro study aimed to determine the incidence of liner malseating in modular dual mobility (MDM) constructs in primary total hip arthroplasties (THAs) from a large volume arthroplasty centre, and determine whether malseating increases the potential for fretting and corrosion at the modular metal interface in malseated MDM constructs using a simulated corrosion chamber. Methods For the clinical arm of the study, observers independently reviewed postoperative radiographs of 551 primary THAs using MDM constructs from a single manufacturer over a three-year period, to identify the incidence of MDM liner-shell malseating. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to identify risk factors including age, sex, body mass index (BMI), cup design, cup size, and the MDM case volume of the surgeon. For the in vitro arm, six pristine MDM implants with cobalt-chrome liners were tested in a simulated corrosion chamber. Three were well-seated and three were malseated with 6° of canting. The liner-shell couples underwent cyclic loading of increasing magnitudes. Fretting current was measured throughout testing and the onset of fretting load was determined by analyzing the increase in average current. Results The radiological review identified that 32 of 551 MDM liners (5.8%) were malseated. Malseating was noted in all of the three different cup designs. The incidence of malseating was significantly higher in low-volume MDM surgeons than high-volume MDM surgeons (p < 0.001). Pristine well-seated liners showed significantly lower fretting current values at all peak loads greater than 800 N (p < 0.044). Malseated liner-shell couples had lower fretting onset loads at 2,400 N. Conclusion MDM malseating remains an issue that can occur in at least one in 20 patients at a high-volume arthroplasty centre. The onset of fretting and increased fretting current throughout loading cycles suggests susceptibility to corrosion when this occurs. These results support the hypothesis that malseated liners may be at risk for fretting corrosion. Clinicians should be aware of this phenomenon. Patients with hip osteoarthritis often have an abnormal spine-hip relation (SHR), meaning the presence of a clinically deleterious spine-hip and/or hip-spine syndrome. Definition of the individual SHR is ideally done using the EOS® imaging system or, if not available, with conventional lumbopelvic lateral radiographs. By pre-operatively screening patients with abnormal SHR, it is possible to refine total hip replacement (THR) surgical planning, which may improve outcomes. An important component of the concept of kinematically aligned total hip arthroplasty (KA THA) consists of defining the optimal acetabular cup design and orientation based on the assessment of an individual’s SHR, and use of the transverse acetabular ligament to adjust the cup positioning.
