Narrow-leaved lupine (Lupinus angustifolius L.) is a cultivated multipurpose species with a very short history of domestication. It is used as a green manure, and for feed and food. This crop shows good prospects for use in pharmacology and as a source of fish feeds in aquaculture. However, its genetic potential for the development of productive and adaptable cultivars is far from being realized. For crop species, the genetic base of the cultivated gene pool has repeatedly been shown as being much narrower than that of the wild gene pool. Therefore, efficient utilization of a species’ genetic resources is important for the crop’s further improvement. Analyzing the information on the germplasm collections preserved in national gene banks can help perceive the worldwide diversity of L. angustifolius genetic resources and understand how they are studied and used. In this context, the data on the narrow-leaved lupine collection held by VIR are presented: its size and composition, the breeding status of accessions, methods of studying and disclosing intraspecific differentiation, the classifications used, and the comparison of this information with available data on other collections. It appeared that VIR’s collection of narrow-leaved lupine, ranking as the world’s second largest, differed significantly from others by the prevalence of advanced cultivars and breeding material in it, while wild accessions prevailed in most collections. The importance of the wild gene pool for the narrow-leaved lupine breeding in Australia, the world leader in lupine production, is highlighted. The need to get an insight into the species’ ecogeographic diversity in order to develop cultivars adaptable to certain cultivation conditions is shown. The data on the testing of VIR’s collection for main crop characters valuable for breeders are presented. Special attention is paid to the study of accessions with limited branching as a promising gene pool for cultivation in relatively northern regions of Russia. They demonstrate lower but more stable productivity, and suitability for cultivation in planting patterns, which has a number of agronomic advantages. Analyzing the work with narrow-leaved lupine genetic resources in different national gene banks over the world helps shape the prospects of further activities with VIR’s collection as the only source of promising material for domestic breeding.

Fifty narrow-leaved lupine accessions of various origin from the VIR collection were studied in Minsk District, Republic of Belarus, and described by a set of morphobiological, biochemical and molecular-genetic characters. According to the results of field and laboratory studies, 10 promising accessions were selected. They are recommended for use in regional breeding programs and included in the working collection of the Belarusian State University.

The aim of the work was to study the chemical composition of seeds of plants Lupinus albus L., Lupinus angustifolius L., growing in the Kaliningrad region. Lupin is a promising crop due to the high content of biologically valuable protein in its seeds, as well as minerals, unsaturated fatty acids, water - and fat-soluble biologically active substances. The paper considers the amino acid, mineral, and fatty acid composition of seeds, presents data on the content of water-soluble vitamins in them, and shows the component composition of chloroform extracts of seeds. The total number of amino acids (47.72±0.37 and 38.655±0.32%, respectively) was found in the seeds of narrow-leaved and white lupine, and a high content of glutamic acid and asparagine was found. The macronutrient composition, which is dominated by potassium, phosphorus and calcium, was studied. Among the microelements of seeds, manganese, iron, zinc and silicon predominate. A particularly high content of manganese in white lupin seeds (192.14±1.67 mg per 100 g) was noted. Analysis of the fatty acid composition of lupin seed oils showed a high degree of unsaturation with a high content of oleic and linoleic acids. Both types of lupine contain thiamine, pyridoxine, and niacin, while white lupine seeds also contain Pantothenic and folic acids. Сhromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of the fraction isolated by chloroform from lupine seeds showed the presence of substances of the terpenes class (farnesene, neofitadiene, γ-tocopherol) and steriodic alcohols (campesterol, β-sitosterol).

Abstract The study objective was to evaluate the impact of different contributions of pea (Pisum sativum) cultivar Hubal and blue lupin (Lupinus angustifolius) cultivar Regent on the level of selected bioactive substances in pork meat. 100 individuals three-breed cross piglets: ♀ (landrace × yorkshire) × ♂ duroc were used. Two experiments were performed, in which pea seeds (experiment I: E1 – 5.0% pea seeds; E2 – 10.0% pea seeds; E3 – 15.0% pea seeds; E4 -17.5% pea seeds) and blue lupin seeds (experiment II; D1 – 5.0% blue lupin seeds; D2 – 10.0% blue lupin seeds; D3 – 15.0% blue lupin seeds) were used instead of SBM-GM. In each of the experiments 50 animals were divided into 5 groups (control - C, and four experimental), placed in group pens, each for 10 individuals (sex ratio hogs : sows - 1:1). The animals were weighed and tagged before the experiments. The mean body weight of the pigs at experiment I and II commencement was: 26.7 and 33.5 kg, and at the end of the experiments: 122.0 and 124.0, respectively. In the first experiment (progressive pea contribution) the concentration of Carnosine was shown to be higher in E4 than E3 and C by 47.3% and 94.2%, respectively. In comparison with group C, the Q10 coenzyme content in groups E1, E2, E3 and E4 was lower by 40.9%; 56.8%; 40.9% and 65.9% respectively. In the second experiment (progressive lupin contribution) increased content of all of the investigated bioactive substances was recorded in groups D1-D3 vs C. Significant differences between groups C, D2, D4 for taurine (P≤0.05; P≤0.01) and creatine (P≤0.05) have been recorded. The content of bioactive substances in the longissimus lumborum muscle was significantly influenced by legumes, which increased the level of bioactive components of protein fraction. Therefore, it can be concluded, that pea (Pisum sativum) cultivar Hubal and blue lupine (Lupinus angustifolius) cultivar Regent are an alternative to SBM-GM, increasing the nutritionally valuable of pork meat.

Thirty-two bacterial isolates were obtained from root nodules of Lupinus angustifolius growing in Northern Tunisia. Phylogenetic analyses based on recA and gyrB partial gene sequences grouped the strains into six clusters: four clusters belonged to the genus Bradyrhizobium (22 isolates), one to Microvirga (8 isolates) and one to Devosia (2 isolates), a genus that has not been previously reported to nodulate lupin. Representative strains of each group were further characterized. Multi-Locus Sequence Analysis (MLSA) based on recA and glnII gene sequences separated the strains within the genus Bradyrhizobium into four divergent clusters related to B. canariense, B. liaoningense, B. lupini, and B. algeriense, respectively. The latter might constitute a new Bradyrhizobium species. The strains in the Microvirga cluster showed high identity with M. tunisiensis. The Devosia isolates might also represent a new species within this genus. An additional phylogenetic analysis based on the symbiotic gene nodC affiliated the strains to symbiovars genistearum, mediterranense, and to a possibly new symbiovar. These results altogether contributed to the existing knowledge on the genetic diversity of lupin-nodulating microsymbionts and revealed a likely new, fast-growing, salt-tolerant rhizobial species within the genus Devosia as a potentially useful inoculant in agricultural practices or landscape restoration.
