The interdependence between structural mechanics and microstructure solidification has been widely observed experimentally as a factor leading to undesirable macroscopic properties and casting defects. Despite this, numerical modelling of microstructure solidification often neglects this interaction and is therefore unable to predict key mechanisms such as the development of misoriented grains. This paper presents a numerical method coupling a finite volume structural mechanics solver to a cellular automata solidification solver, where gravity or pressure-driven displacements alter the local orientation and thereby growth behaviour of the solidifying dendrites. Solutions obtained using this model are presented which show fundamental behaviours observed in experiments. The results show that small, localized deformations can lead to significant changes in the crystallographic orientation of a dendrite and ultimately affect the overall microstructure development. This article is part of the theme issue 'Transport phenomena in complex systems (part 2)'.

A predictive model was performed to describe Pseudomonas stutzeri strain DN2 growth behaviour in tributyltin chloride, using primary Modelling and a polynomial model as a secondary predictive model. In this investigation, data predicted using the modified Logistic (ML) was the most accurate. The Bias Factor (Bf) and Accuracy Factor (Af) values for the (ML) model were 1.39 and 1.51, indicating that the predictions were within a reliable range. The low RMSE value of 0.14, R2 and adj R2 (0.99) value closer to 1, showing that modified logistics is better than the other models at describing the growth behaviour of Pseudomonas stutzeri strain DN2 in toxic tributyltin chloride. Both the Aiba and Haldane models on the other hand, among the secondary model best fit the behaviours having low RMSE and MSE values and adjR2 value closer to 1. In this study, the primary and secondary kinetics of Pseudomonas stutzeri strain DN2 growth behaviour in tributyltin chloride was explored and it was shown in this study that the modified logistic and the Haldane models better suit the growth behavior of Pseudomonas stutzeri strain DN2 in tributyltin chloride. The parameters obtained from the modelling exercise will be very valuable in transferring the laboratory results to the field.

Abstract In this work, the grain growth behaviour of ZnO+V2O5(1 mol%)+Cr2O3(0.35 mol%)-based ceramics with 0.25–0.75 mol% additions of PrMnO3 was systematically investigated during sintering from 850°C to 925°C with the aim to control the ZnO grain size for their application as varistors. It was found that with the increased addition of PrMnO3, not only did the average grain size decrease, but the grain size distribution also narrowed and eventually changed from a bimodal to unimodal distribution after a 0.75 mol% PrMnO3 addition. The grain growth control was achieved by a pinning effect of the secondary ZnCr2O4 and PrVO4 phases at the ZnO grain boundaries. The apparent activation energy of the ZnO grain growth in these ceramics was found to increase with increased additions of PrVO4; hence, the observed reduction in the ZnO grain sizes.

In the ecological future of the planet, intelligent agriculture relies on CPS and IoT to free up human resources and increase production efficiency. Due to the growing number of connected IoT devices, the maximum scalability capacity, and available computing power of the existing architectural frameworks will be reached. This necessitates finding a solution that meets the continuously growing demands in smart farming. Cloud-based IoT solutions are achieving increasingly high popularity. The aim of this study was to design a scalable cloud-based architecture for a smart livestock monitoring system following Agile methodology and featuring environmental monitoring, health, growth, behaviour, reproduction, emotional state, and stress levels of animals. The AWS services used, and their specific tasks related to the proposed architecture are explained in detail. A stress test was performed to prove the data ingesting and processing capability of the proposed architecture. Experimental results proved that the proposed architecture using AWS automated scaling mechanisms and IoT devices are fully capable of processing the growing amount of data, which in turn allow for meeting the required needs of the constantly expanding number of CPS systems.

The sibling species Anisakis simplex (s.s.) and Anisakis pegreffii are parasites of marine mammals and fish worldwide and the main causative agents of human anisakiasis. In sympatric areas, a hybrid genotype between the two species has been identified, mainly in third-stage larvae, but rarely in fourth-stage and adult forms. The aim of this study was to confirm the presence of hybrid genotypes in larvae parasitizing fish caught in sympatric and allopatric Spanish marine waters, the North-East Atlantic and West Mediterranean, respectively, and to study possible differences in the growth behaviour between genotypes. Of the 254 molecularly analysed larvae, 18 were identified as hybrids by PCR-RFLP analysis of the rDNA ITS region, 11 of which were subsequently confirmed by EF1 α-1 nDNA gene sequencing. These results therefore indicate an overestimation of hybrid genotypes when identification is based only on the ITS region. We also report the detection of a hybrid specimen in a host from the West Mediterranean, considered an allopatric zone. Additionally, fourth-stage larvae with a hybrid genotype were obtained in vitro for the first time, and no differences were observed in their growth behaviour compared to larvae with A. simplex (s.s.) and A. pegreffii genotypes.
