This article presents the study of the resilient behavior of three soil horizons from a deposit of lateritic soil employed in a pavement structure in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The use of lateritic soils in pavement layers is a common practice in Brazil and due to its peculiarities, its behavior must be investigated. The methodology consisted of physical and chemical characterization and resilient modulus determination. Samples from the three horizons, compacted at standard, intermediate and modified energy, were analyzed. In addition, undisturbed samples extracted from the interior and top layer of the embankment were submitted to repeated load triaxial tests for resilient modulus determination. The results indicated that the soil exhibit good behavior for pavement subgrade applications, perhaps as subbase or base course layers. The compound and universal models yielded the best correlation coefficients. Furthermore, the results showed that as the compaction energy increased, the resilient modulus also increased, as long as they are within the optimum water content and compaction degree limit. However, when subjected to immersion in water for four days, the resilient behavior decreased about 73% in relation to unsaturated samples.

The primary objective of this research is to investigate the role of strategic human resource management practices in developing resilient organizational behavior. This research aims to test the mediating function of individual resilient behavior between strategic human resources management practices and resilient organizational behavior. Data was collected from 780 managerial level employees working in small and medium Chinese enterprises in Hubei Province through a self-administrated questionnaire. The Smart partial least square structural equation modeling technique was used for data analysis. The analysis showed a significant positive relationship among SHRM practices, employee resilient behavior, and resilient organizational behavior. Results also show that employee resilient behavior partially mediates the relationship between SHRM practices and resilient organizational behavior. Individual resilient behavior is needed when an organization is in crisis, restructuring, transformation, turbulent, and unfavorable conditions. Without individual resilient behavior, it is difficult for an organization to be resilient. Therefore, strategic human resource management practices are essential to develop an employee’s resilience. This research contributed to the body of knowledge by bringing new concepts together. The main contribution was testing the role of individual resilient behavior between strategic human resource management practices and resilient organizational behavior.

Adaptive behavior in response to adverse experiences facilitates faster recovery and less time spent engaging in maladaptive behaviors that contribute to psychopathology, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Dysregulation of activity in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) has been implicated in these disorders, as well as in diminished cognitive flexibility, with stress further exacerbating these negative effects. Corticotropin-releasing factor is an important regulator of the stress-response system and may have a differential involvement in individuals who are especially susceptible to negative stress-related outcomes. A recent study by Chen et al. (Neuron 106: 301-315, 2020) has identified a novel subtype of GABAergic CRF interneurons in the dorsomedial PFC that, upon activation, can promote active responses and resilient behavior in response to stress.

At the start of 2020, hospitals around the world were trying to adapt during the COVID-19 pandemic. From the resilience engineering perspective, this outbreak would be a significant test as healthcare institutions try to tolerate and manage this major disruption. This paper shares insights on what a stand-alone paediatric hospital in Singapore had done to stay ahead since the beginning of the outbreak. Observations were conducted from 25-Jan-20 to 25-Mar-20 to capture evidence of resilient behavior, notably in the form of improvisations. Findings revealed adaptations made across various organization levels: at the macrosystem to create capacity to isolate safely, at the mesosystem to facilitate teamwork, and at the microsystem to manage compromises at the frontlines. Juxtaposing this episode with other examples of organizational resilience, this paper maps out common resilience engineering themes in the hospital’s response to COVID-19, but also questions what defines an organization’s success in being resilient.

The traffic-induced cyclic stresses on the road base and subbase courses are usually in three-dimensional stress state, while so far most laboratory studies have focused on the deformation behavior of base and subbase layers in axisymmetric stress state. This study investigates the three-dimensional resilient behavior of coarse granular base and subbase materials based on a true triaxial apparatus. The factors of effective confining pressure, [Formula: see text], amplitude of cyclic shear stress, qampl, coefficient of cyclic intermediate principal stress, bcyc, and fines content are involved. Test results indicate that the increase of either [Formula: see text] or qampl leads to a nonlinear growth of resilient modulus with a decreasing growth rate. bcyc, which is proposed to represent the coupling of cyclic major and intermediate principal stresses, is found to have a promotion effect on the resilient stiffness, and the promotion effect tends to be enhanced by the increase of qampl. A modified model is established to predict the resilient modulus of coarse granular materials in three-dimensional stress state. There appears to exist a critical value of fines content, at which the variation trend of resilient modulus is changed from increasing to decreasing, and the critical fines content is related to both [Formula: see text] and bcyc.
