By combining the structural properties and characteristics of phosphogypsum whiskers, a preliminary study on the modification of phosphogypsum whiskers and their application in papermaking was carried out. The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, and reaction concentration on the solubility and retention of modified phosphogypsum whiskers and the effects of phosphogypsum whiskers on the physical properties of paper under different modified conditions were explored. The research results show that, after the phosphogypsum whiskers are modified with calcium stearate, a coating layer will be formed on the surface of the whiskers, which effectively reduces the solubility of the phosphogypsum whiskers. The best modification conditions are: the amount of calcium stearate relative to the absolute dry mass of the phosphogypsum whisker is 2.00%; the modification time is 30 min, and the modification temperature is 60°C. The use of modified phosphogypsum whiskers for paper filling will slightly reduce the whiteness, folding resistance, burst resistance, and tensile strength of the paper, but the tearing degree and retention of the filler will be increased to some extent.

AbstractSelf-ignition coal gangue (SCG) used as one of precursors to fabricate autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC). Aiming at studying water absorptivity and frost resistance performance of SCG-based AAC (SCGAAC), three-period water absorption tests and freeze-thaw tests were carried out and the corresponding results were recorded and analyzed. In order to modify the water absorptivity of SCGAAC, foam stabilizer was applied to adjust pore structure while calcium stearate was expected to change hydrophilic feature of SCG. It was demonstrated that the compressive strength of SCGAAC containing foam stabilizer or calcium stearate declined at different levels. For water absorption, foam stabilizer failed to decrease the water content and even increased water absorption rates. Calcium stearate controlled water absorption rate successfully although the ultimate water content hardly reduced. All of the SCGAAC samples exhibited intact appearance after 50 freeze-thaw cycles and showed excellent frost resistance performance. Three models were proposed to predict water absorptivity and frost resistance performance of SCGAAC and the corresponding prediction results matched test resulted well.

The introduction of small amounts of calcium stearate and molybdenum disulfide into polyurethane ureas based on a oligoether of polyoxytetramethylenediol with a molecular weight M~1000 does not lead to a significant change in the abrasive wear mechanism of the polymer material. The concentration dependence of the wear degree on the filler content has an extreme character, which is associated with the different direction of the filler effect on the cohesive and frictional properties of the studied material.

The effects of neutralizer species on the transparency of injection-molded plates were studied using isotactic polypropylene (PP) containing a crystal nucleating agent—i.e., 1,3:2,4-bis-o-(4-methylbenzylidene)-d-sorbitol (MDBS). A plate containing lithium stearate (StLi) was more transparent than one containing calcium stearate (StCa) when the MDBS content was 0.1 wt. %. The addition of StLi accelerated the formation of MDBS fibers and the crystallization of PP. However, when the MDBS content was 1.0 wt. %, StCa improved the transparency more effectively than StLi. These results indicate that the combination of an appropriate amount of MDBS and the correct neutralizer species is critical for enhancing the transparency of injection-molded PP plates.
