Antenna arrays have become an essential part of most wireless communications systems. In this paper, the unwanted sidelobes in the symmetric linear array power pattern are reduced efficiently by utilizing a faster simultaneous sidelobes processing algorithm, which generates nulling sub-beams that are adapted to control and maintain steep convergence toward lower sidelobe levels. The proposed algorithm is performed using adaptive damping and heuristic factors which result in learning curve perturbations during the first few loops of the reduction process and is followed by a very steep convergence profile towards deep sidelobe levels. The numerical results show that, using the proposed adaptive sidelobes simultaneous reduction algorithm, a maximum sidelobe level of −50 dB can be achieved after only 10 iteration loops (especially for very large antenna arrays formed by 256 elements, wherein the processing time is reduced to approximately 25% of that required by the conventional fixed damping factor case). On the other hand, the generated array weights can be applied to practical linear antenna arrays under mutual coupling effects, which have shown very similar results to the radiation pattern of the isotropic antenna elements with very deep sidelobe levels and the same beamwidth.

This article presents the design of a planar MIMO (Multiple Inputs Multiple Outputs) antenna comprised of two sets orthogonally placed 1 × 12 linear antenna arrays for 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) applications. The arrays are made of probe-fed microstrip patch antenna elements on a 90 × 160 mm2 Rogers RT/Duroid 5880 grounded dielectric substrate. The antenna demonstrates S11 = −10 dB impedance bandwidth in the following 5G frequency band: 24.25–27.50 GHz. The scattering parameters of the antenna were computed by electromagnetic simulation tools, Ansys HFSS and CST Microwave Studio, and were further verified by the measured results of a fabricated prototype. To achieve a gain of 12 dBi or better over a scanning range of +/−45° from broadside, the Dolph-Tschebyscheff excitation weighting and optimum spacing are used. Different antenna parameters, such as correlation coefficient, port isolation, and 2D and 3D radiation patterns, are investigated to determine the effectiveness of this antenna for MIMO operation, which will be very useful for mmWave cellphone applications in 5G bands.

Side lobe level reduction is one of the most critical research topics in antenna arrays beamforming as it mitigates the interfering and jamming signals. In this paper, a hybrid combination between the Genetic algorithm (GA) optimization technique and the gauss elimination (GE) equation solving technique is utilized for the introduction of the proposed GA/GE beamforming technique for linear antenna arrays. The proposed technique estimates the optimum excitation coefficients and the non-uniform inter-elements spacing for a specific side lobe (SL) cancellation without disturbing the half power beamwidth (HPBW) of the main beam. Different size Chebychev linear antenna arrays are taken as simulation targets. The simulation results revealed the effectiveness of the proposed technique

In the present work, a dynamic stochastic method is proposed and used for the synthesis of uniform linear antenna arrays. The proposed method combines the classical invasive weeds (IWO) and the mutation process, which makes it robust, simple and shows flexibility to be adapted. The dynamic IWO applies the mutation process in the calculation of standard deviation during the spatial dispersal process of produced seeds while keeping the mean at the parent plants. In the mutation process, if special conditions were achieved, the standard deviation would be re-initialized. This proposed method tries to achieve an optimal array pattern by acting on the relative amplitude excitation of each element in the linear array for an optimal inter-element spacing. The optimal array pattern has deep or broad nulls in some directions of interferences with low sidelobes level. The objective of the synthesis is to get amplitude excitations with low dynamic range ratio (DRR), which facilitates the design of beamforming feed network. To illustrate the robustness of the proposed method, numerical examples are presented and compared with the obtained results using bees algorithm (BA), bacterial foraging algorithm (BFA), real genetic algorithm (RGA), and the corresponding reference array pattern for each example.

This paper presents a complete overview of the recently developed Gaussian approach for the synthesis of both periodic and aperiodic linear antenna arrays in conjunction with an exhaustive numerical investigation of the achievable performance. The position and excitation synthesis problems are jointly modeled to enable a direct mutual comparison between the two strategies. To this aim, different parameter settings are selected to analyze the results in terms of achieved beamwidth and maximum sidelobe levels as a function of the array aperture and of the number of radiating elements. The insights inferred from this numerical investigation are exploited to derive a novel first-step procedure with the purpose of enabling an antenna engineer to quickly identify the most suitable design approach, thus reducing the time required for antenna system development.
