Abstract Purpose: To observe the therapeutic effect on recurrent corneal erosion syndrome (RCES) by intense pulsed light (IPL) combined with meibomian gland massage. Methods: We recruited 30 patients (30 eyes) with RCES as the RCES group and 31 patients (31 eyes) as the control group. Both the groups received eyelash sampling, Demodex count, meibomian gland infrared photography, and the blepharolipin score. The RCES group was divided into the treatment group and the observation group again. Results: Parameters in the RCES group were higher than those in the control group. The parameters of the treatment group were decreased compared with the observation group. During the follow-up period, one patient in the treatment group relapsed. Conclusion: Meibomian gland dysfunction and Demodex infection may be associated with RCES. IPL combined with meibomian gland massage can significantly improve meibomian gland function, reduce the number of Demodex, and effectively control the relapse of RCES.

PurposeTo report a case of dupilumab induced ocular surface disease (DIOSD) managed with intense pulsed light (IPL) as an effective adjunct therapy to topical steroids and topical immunomodulator lifitegrast.MethodsDiscussion of a patient’s case with accompanying anterior segment and meibography photos with diagnosed DIOSD for which adjunct therapy with IPL was an effective treatment after limited relief from and difficulty with adherence to traditional treatment with topical steroids and lifitegrast ophthalmic solutions. ConclusionThis case demonstrates the complexity of management required to treat patients with DIOSD and its chronic nature. IPL as a nonpharmaceutical adjunct therapy to topical steroids and immunomodulators in the treatment of DIOSD showed improved signs and symptoms of DIOSD.

The aim of this study was to find the optimum condition of pulsed electric field (PEF) and intense pulsed light (IPL) for the enhancement of subcritical water extraction (SWE), which is an eco-friendly extraction method, for extracting tea catechins from green tea leaves (Camellia sinensis). The leaves were treated with PEF under conditions of electric field strength (1, 2 and 3 kV/cm) during 60 s. Moreover, IPL was applied at various voltages (800, 1000, and 1200 V) for 60 s. The SWE was performed for 5 min at varying temperatures (110, 130, 150, 170, and 190 °C). The maximum yield of total catechin was 44.35 ± 2.00 mg/g dry green tea leaves at PEF treatment conditions of 2 kV/cm during 60 s, as well as the SWE temperature of 130 °C. In the case of IPL treatment, the largest amount of total catechin was 48.06 ± 5.03 mg/g dry green tea leaves at 800 V during 60 s when the extraction temperature was 130 °C. The total catechin content was increased by 15.43% for PEF and 25.09% for IPL compared to the value of untreated leaves. This study verified that PEF and IPL had a positive effect on the enhancement of tea catechins extraction from green tea leaves using SWE.

BACKGROUND: The development of new methods for the treatment of rosacea, as well as a combination of various methods of physiotherapy, is of scientific and practical interest. In this work, the assessment of changes in microcirculation indices under complex phototherapy has been carried out. AIMS: Тo assess changes in microcirculation indices in patients with a combination of rosacea subtypes according to laser Doppler flowmetry under a course of complex phototherapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 20172020 a randomized controlled study of 130 patients with a combination of rosacea subtypes. All patients were divided into 4 groups. In each separate group, laser therapy and 1% metronidazole cream were used (group I); phototherapy and 1% metronidazole cream (group II); complex photolaser therapy and 1% metronidazole cream (group III); in the comparison group (group IV), patients show only 1% metronidazole cream. The treatment, the duration of which was 3 months, included 6 sessions with an interval of 2 weeks. The effectiveness of therapy was assessed according to the data of laser Doppler flowmetry, reflecting changes in the hemodynamics of the microvasculature in the affected skin areas. RESULTS: The developed complex method, including exposure to intense pulsed light (intense pulsed light, IPL) 5201100 nm in combination with submillisecond neodymium laser radiation 1064 nm (submilisecond Nd: YAG laser 1064 nm) and daily application of 1% metronidazole cream showed the most pronounced improvement in the state of microcirculation according to laser Doppler flowmetry in comparison with the rest groups. Against the background of the course of complex phototherapy for all patients with the combined subtype of rosacea, statistically significant changes were in the volume of blood flow, modulation coefficients, coefficient of variation. On the contrary, no statistically significant changes were found in the ranges corresponding to active regulatory factors endothelial, neurogenic, myogenic, and passive respiratory and cardiac, as well as in the T index. CONCLUSION: After the course of complex phototherapy in the group of patients with a combination of rosacea subtypes, there was a decrease in the severity of clinical manifestations of diseases, as well as an improvement in the main indicators of microcirculation according to laser Doppler flowmetry.

Abstract Background Although there is an abundance of literature on nonablative laser and energy-based therapies for the management of skin conditions, adverse events are inconsistently addressed and range widely across studies. Fitzpatrick skin phototypes (SPTs) IV to VI are believed to be at higher risk. Objectives The aim of this study was to determine the types and rates of adverse events in nonablative laser and energy-based therapies among patients with SPTs IV to VI. Methods Articles addressing nonablative laser and energy-based therapies for skin rejuvenation and acne scarring in patients with SPTs IV to VI that provided data on adverse events were included. The pooled prevalence of each adverse event was calculated. To determine whether age, treatment indication, SPT, and device type influenced incidence, subgroup and meta-regression analyses were performed. Heterogeneity was evaluated with the I2 statistic. Results Forty-three studies were included in the meta-analysis. The sample size was 1654, and the median age of subjects was 39.4 years. The most common adverse events were postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) (rate, 8.1%) and prolonged erythema (rate, 0.6%). The rate of PIH was significantly higher for diode and erbium-doped lasers compared with intense pulsed light and radiofrequency. PIH correlated positively with SPT, laser density, and total energy delivered. Conclusions Although the overall rate of adverse events in nonablative laser and energy-based therapies for SPTs IV to VI is low, the incidence of PIH is not insignificant. Certain lasers, such as diode, Q-switched Nd:YAG, and erbium-doped lasers, tend to have higher rates of PIH, whereas intense pulsed light and radiofrequency have minimal risk. Higher SPTs and higher energy deliverance correlate positively with the incidence of PIH. Level of Evidence: 4

Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires (NWs) are wide-bandgap semiconductors that absorb ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Various post-treatment processes have been studied to improve the optical properties of the as-grown ZnO NWs. Among them, Ag nanoparticles (NPs) effectively improved the optical properties on the surface of the ZnO NWs. In this study, ZnO NWs were synthesized via the hydrothermal synthesis method. ZnO NWs were decorated with Ag NPs on the surface of the ZnO NWs in a silver nitrate (AgNO3) aqueous solution by intense pulsed light (IPL) irradiation. Ag NPs were successfully decorated under the following conditions: aqueous AgNO3 solution of 100 nM, an energy of 1 J/cm2, and an exposure time of 8 ms. The responsivity and sensitivity of the ZnO NW UV photodetectors increased by 7.43 and 3.37 times, respectively. The IPL process makes it possible to decorate Ag NPs in a simple manner within an extremely short time.
