Intense Pulsed Light Combined With Meibomian Gland Massage for Recurrent Corneal Erosion: a Review of Clinical Effectiveness

Purpose: To observe the therapeutic effect on recurrent corneal erosion syndrome (RCES) by intense pulsed light (IPL) combined with meibomian gland massage. Methods: We recruited 30 patients (30 eyes) with RCES as the RCES group and 31 patients (31 eyes) as the control group. Both the groups received eyelash sampling, Demodex count, meibomian gland infrared photography, and the blepharolipin score. The RCES group was divided into the treatment group and the observation group again. Results: Parameters in the RCES group were higher than those in the control group. The parameters of the treatment group were decreased compared with the observation group. During the follow-up period, one patient in the treatment group relapsed. Conclusion: Meibomian gland dysfunction and Demodex infection may be associated with RCES. IPL combined with meibomian gland massage can significantly improve meibomian gland function, reduce the number of Demodex, and effectively control the relapse of RCES.

Research on the Dual Modulation of All-Fiber Optic Current Sensor

Acousto-optic modulator (AOM) and electro-optical modulator (EOM) are applied to realize the all-fiber current sensor with a pulsed light source. The pulsed light is realized by amplitude modulation with AOM. The reflected interferometer current sensor is constructed by the mirror and phase modulation with EOM to improve the anti-interference ability. A correlation demodulation algorithm is applied for data processing. The influence of the modulation frequency and duty cycle of AOM on the optical system is determined by modeling and experiment. The duty cycle is the main factor affecting the normalized scale factor of the system. The modulation frequency mainly affects the output amplitude of the correlation demodulation and the system signal-to-noise ratio. The frequency multiplication factor links AOM and EOM, primarily affecting the ratio error. When the frequency multiplication factor is equal to the duty cycle of AOM and it is an integer multiple of 0.1, the ratio error of the system is less than 1.8% and the sensitivity and the resolution of AFOCS are 0.01063 mV/mA and 3 mA, respectively. The measurement range of AFOCS is from 11 mA to 196.62 A, which is excellent enough to meet the practical requirements for microcurrent measurement.

INTENSE PULSED LIGHT (IPL) TREATMENT FOR DUPILUMAB INDUCED OCULAR SURFACE DISEASE (DIOSD)

PurposeTo report a case of dupilumab induced ocular surface disease (DIOSD) managed with intense pulsed light (IPL) as an effective adjunct therapy to topical steroids and topical immunomodulator lifitegrast.MethodsDiscussion of a patient’s case with accompanying anterior segment and meibography photos with diagnosed DIOSD for which adjunct therapy with IPL was an effective treatment after limited relief from and difficulty with adherence to traditional treatment with topical steroids and lifitegrast ophthalmic solutions. ConclusionThis case demonstrates the complexity of management required to treat patients with DIOSD and its chronic nature. IPL as a nonpharmaceutical adjunct therapy to topical steroids and immunomodulators in the treatment of DIOSD showed improved signs and symptoms of DIOSD.
