<div>"With due regard to realism and administration practicability discuss the need for child guidance clinics in New Zealand, and the more important problems involved in organising them."</div><div>This quotation resembles a stone thrown into a pool from which a number of ripples radiate all having the same centre. It raises related questions in every field of education, some of which must be solved before the central question can be answered with any finality. In the mind of a student living in Renwicktown, a small rural community in the Province of Marlborough, it could not fail to raise the questions: "How does this affect the country child? How great is the need for guidance in the small community? And most important: " Would parents and teachers avail themselves of clinical services if they were provided?" Three questions require to be answered by the persons concerned.</div>

After World War II in the Netherlands, outpatient mental health care for children expanded greatly. The number of Child Guidance Clinics grew, and university child-psychiatric clinics and Youth Psychiatric Services were newly established. The leading diagnostic and treatment ideology was mainly Freudian and focused on psychotherapy. During the 1960s the Child Guidance Clinics were outstripped by the more innovative university clinics that introduced new kinds of treatment, such as play- and group-therapy. This ended the hegemony of psychiatrists, as child psychologists and psychiatric social workers replaced them as therapists. At the same time, psychologists of the two denominational university Paedological Institutes took the lead in the scientific study of children’s more serious psychopathology and the development of play-therapy and remedial teaching methods.

This paper examines the aspect of working with the family in the framework of psychological and pedagogical support of primary school pupils with disabilities (category of disorders of the musculoskeletal system). The optimal child guidance in relation to a primary school pupil with disabilities is shown. A desirable style of child guidance, the formation of which psychological and pedagogical support should contribute, is to accept the situation and help the pupil in this acceptance and in the formation of those qualities that will help compensate for his/her violations. Methods of observation, conversation and psychodiagnosis were applied. We also used "Analysis of family education" method (E. Eidemiller and V. Yustitskis). As a result of empirical research of families with children with cerebral palsy (only with preserved mental capacity), it was revealed that there are disharmonious styles of child guidance in families — coziness and hyperprotection prevailed. A feature of the psychological and pedagogical support of primary school pupils with disabilities should be actions aimed at educating parents about the variety of child guidance styles and selection of an optimal one according to their individual situation. The prospect of the research is to consider the characteristics of child guidance in families with various types of health limitations.
