The sizes of the vortex region before the axisymmetric sudden contraction of the circular pipe at the Newtonian flow have been investigated. Area ratios 0.250 and 0.500 were considered. The sizes of the vortex region have the extreme dependence with a maximum at the transition of the laminar flow into a turbulent flow one. When the Reynolds number at the laminar flow increase, these sizes also increase, and they decrease at the turbulent flow. In both cases, the sizes of the vortex region are proportional to the Reynolds number. A transition region between laminar flow and turbulent flow lies in the range of the Reynolds number from 3000 to 5300 and 750…1300, determined by the diameter of a bigger pipe of sudden expansion and a step height correspondingly

Fluctuating pressure is the main cause of the floor fatigue of the stilling basin with a negative step. Despite investigations of stilling basin with a negative step conducted by many researchers, there is not enough information about the influence of the geometric parameters on fluctuating pressure on the floor. In the present study, fluctuating pressure on the floor of the stilling basin with a negative step was systematically investigated by a total of 85 model tests. The results show that the fluctuating pressure coefficient Cp’ has a process of rapid increase and decrease, and then decreases slowly until it becomes stable, and the maximum fluctuating pressure coefficient Cp’max lies in the reattachment zone rather than in the jet impingement area for Type II-jump. The dominant frequency of the fluctuating pressure on the floor shows a decreasing trend along stilling basin. With the increase of the step height, the Cp’max presents decreasing trend but X*0 where the Cp’max occurs increasing trend. While there has on obvious regularity between incident angle and Cp’. Finally, according to the fitting of test data, an empirical formula to calculate Cp’max is developed. These research results provide reference for the design of stilling basin with a negative step in engineering applications.

Abstract Based on Burton−Cabrera−Frank theory and the step-edge segregation model, we analyzed the reported difference in the sheet concentration of doped magnesium under naturally formed surface stripes on homo-epitaxially grown layers on a freestanding GaN substrate misoriented from a c-plane by 0.3°. By assuming the step height being equal to the peak-to-valley height of the surface stripes, we considered the growth steps on gently and sharply sloped surfaces to be supplied, respectively, from mixed dislocations and the misorientation from the c-plane. The step-velocity dependence of the magnesium concentration was reproduced with the reported magnesium diffusivity of 3×10−14 cm2s−1.

Abstract In this paper, a kinematic analysis of Theo Jansen’s stepping mechanism has been carried out and an algorithm for finding the output link trajectory from the given dimensions of the stepping mechanism elements, implemented by Mathcad program, has been developed. It is possible to output characterising parameters of all intermediate links with any number of intermediate links of a step cycle of the mechanism. The dimensions of the mechanism elements have been selected so that they provide the optimal smooth trajectory of the stepping point, minimising the mechanism oscillations in the vertical plane. A comparison of the trajectories of the foot in this study with the classical trajectory of Theo Jansen and the trajectory from article [7] has been provided. A minimum swing of the oscillation of the centre of mechanism masses in the vertical plane has been selected as an optimality criterion, combined with the maximum smoothness of the trajectory, provided that maximization of the step height is not required.

Enamel erosion has become a common clinical finding that often impairs dental esthetics and function. In the current study, we aimed to implement the three-dimensional surface texture analysis (3DST) method to explore the protective effect of fluoride on surface texture prior to erosive conditions. For each of the 50 teeth used in this study, the polished buccal enamel surface was divided into three separate areas: the first area was untouched polished enamel, the two other surfaces were immersed in 0.3% citric acid for 30 s. One was treated with high-concentration (19,000 ppm) sodium fluoride (NaF) solution prior to acid attack, and the other had no treatment prior to acid exposure. Enamel surface texture and step height measurements were obtained using a high-resolution disk scanning confocal microscope, and SEM images were also acquired. Surfaces treated with fluoride showed fewer variations in 3-D surface texture parameters than the eroded surface compared to the control group (p = 0.001). This was in accordance with the SEM descriptive images. The findings indicate that pre-fluoridated enamel areas were less affected by the acid and showed similar features to the untouched enamel. Moreover, a protective effect of the fluoride treatment against irreversible enamel damage was noted as the surface loss (step-height) was significantly reduced (p = 0.03). The study showed that 3DST analysis is a valuable methodology for detecting and quantifying subtle differences between the surfaces. When exploring the combination of all surface texture parameters, it was revealed that the pre-fluoridated eroded enamel surfaces showed considerable similarity to the untouched enamel.
