We explored the relationship between population interneuronal network activation and motor output in the adult, in-vivo, air stepping, spinal cat. By simultaneously measuring the activity of large numbers of spinal interneurons, we explored ensembles of coherently firing interneurons and their relation to motor output. Additionally, the networks were analyzed in relation to their spatial distribution along the lumbar enlargement for evidence of localized groups driving particular phases of the locomotor step cycle. We simultaneously recorded hindlimb EMG activity during stepping and extracellular signals from 128 channels across two polytrodes inserted within lamina V-VII of two separate lumbar segments. Results indicated that spinal interneurons participate in one of two ensembles that are highly correlated with the flexor or the extensor muscle bursts during stepping. Interestingly, less than half of the isolated single units were significantly unimodally tuned during the step cycle while >97% of the single units of the ensembles were significantly correlated with muscle activity. These results show the importance of population scale analysis in neural studies of behavior as there is a much greater correlation between muscle activity and ensemble firing than between muscle activity and individual neurons. Finally, we show that there is no correlation between interneurons' rostrocaudal locations within the lumbar enlargement and their preferred phase of firing or ensemble participation. These findings indicate that spinal interneurons of lamina V-VII encoding for different phases of the locomotor cycle are spread throughout the lumbar enlargement in the adult spinal cord.

Typical photowitches interconvert between two different states by simple isomerization reactions, which represents a fundamental limit for applications. To expand the switching capacity usually different photoswitches have to be linked together leading to strong increase in molecular weight, diminished switching function, and less precision and selectivity of switching events. Herein we present an approach for solving this essential problem with a different photoswitching concept. A basic molecular switch architecture provides precision photoswitching between eight different states via controlled rotations around three adjacent covalent bonds. All eight states can be populated one after another in an eight-step cycle by alternating between photochemical Hula-Twist isomerizations and thermal single bond rotations. By simply changing solvent and temperature the same switch can also undergo a different cycle instead interconverting just five isomers in a selective sequence. This behavior is enabled through the discovery of an unprecedented photoreaction, a one photon dual single bond rotation.

Abstract In this paper, a kinematic analysis of Theo Jansen’s stepping mechanism has been carried out and an algorithm for finding the output link trajectory from the given dimensions of the stepping mechanism elements, implemented by Mathcad program, has been developed. It is possible to output characterising parameters of all intermediate links with any number of intermediate links of a step cycle of the mechanism. The dimensions of the mechanism elements have been selected so that they provide the optimal smooth trajectory of the stepping point, minimising the mechanism oscillations in the vertical plane. A comparison of the trajectories of the foot in this study with the classical trajectory of Theo Jansen and the trajectory from article [7] has been provided. A minimum swing of the oscillation of the centre of mechanism masses in the vertical plane has been selected as an optimality criterion, combined with the maximum smoothness of the trajectory, provided that maximization of the step height is not required.

The aims of this study were to define determinant factors that affected throwing actions used to score goals in handball, and to study the effectiveness of throwing actions and their relationships with different factors during their use, such as: the throwing distance, type of arm build, type of throw, whether it is done while jumping or while supported, the last supporting foot and the previous step cycle, as well as their relationship with the final score of the game in elite male handball competitions. A total of 1049 shots from 24 matches in the 2018/19/20 International Men’s Handball Championship were analysed. The results show that distance is relevant in the effectiveness of throwing, setting the build up, throwing while supported or jumping, the type of throwing, the type of steps cycle used and the supporting foot. This seems to indicate that the determining factor that affects a throw is distance.

PPy/silane composite film on a magnesium alloy surface was prepared by one-step cycle voltammetry. The mixed solution of methanol and water was used as the hydrolysis solvent of a γ-(2,3-glycidoxypropyl) trimethoxysilane coupling agent (KH-560). The surface morphology of the PPy/silane film, the electro-polymerization progress of KH-560 and PPy, the influence of the silane coupling agent and the corrosion behavior of the coated AZ31 Mg alloy were all investigated. The results indicated that the PPy/silane film on AZ31 Mg alloy via one-step cyclic voltammetry could provide better corrosion protection for an Mg alloy when the volume fraction of KH-560 in the hydrolysis solution was 15% and the time span of hydrolysis was 24 h with the 5.935 × 10−10 A cm−2 corrosion current density.

Locomotor activity requires fine balance control that strongly depends on the afferent input from the load receptors. Following hindlimb unloading (HU), the kinematic and EMG activity of the hindlimbs is known to change significantly. However, the effects of HU on the integrative control mechanisms of posture and locomotion are not clear. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the center of mass (CoM) dynamic stabilization and associated adaptive changes in the trunk and hindlimb muscle activity during locomotion after 7 days of HU. The EMG signals from the muscles of the low lumbar trunk (m. longissimus dorsi [VERT]) and the hind limb (m. tibialis anterior [TA], m. semitendinosus [ST], m. soleus [SOL]) were recorded together with the hindquarter kinematics during locomotion on a treadmill in 6 rats before and after HU. The CoM lateral shift in the step cycle significantly increased after HU and coincided with the enhanced activity of VERT. The mean EMG of the TA and the ST flexor activity increased significantly with reduction of their burst duration. These data demonstrate the disturbances of body balance after HU that can influence the basic parameters of locomotor activity. The load-dependent mechanisms resulted in compensatory adjustments of flexor activity toward a faster gait strategy, such as a trot or gallop, which presumably have supraspinal origin. The neuronal underpinnings of these integrative posture and locomotion mechanisms and their possible reorganization after HU are discussed.

Abstract During the development of a sCO2 turbine for the STEP program under DOE funding, radial inlet and exit designs were completed under mechanical and thermal constraints while seeking to maximize aerodynamic performance [1]. The flow path geometries of the designs were optimized at a single steady-state, design condition to minimize the total pressure loss. In order to efficiently characterize changes in performance across a range of operating points of the closed-loop cycle, off-design loss models for the inlet and exit diffuser have been created from CFD simulation results. To generate boundary conditions for the exit diffuser, numerous 1D exit profiles were selected from a regression analysis of turbine map points as a function of pressure ratio and corrected speed; radial inlet conditions emanated from planned cycle operating points. From base equation forms that include dynamic pressure and swirl components, equation constants were optimized to provide a best fit to CFD results. The equations generated were able to be integrated into existing STEP cycle modeling tools to enhance the prediction of turbine response as the operating point deviates significantly from design values. The methods outlined in this paper can provide a guide for evaluating the off-design performance of turbine inlet and exit designs dissimilar from conventional designs for which correlations are available.
