The article discusses the issue of determining the mechanical characteristics of the material of additive structures, taking into account such printing parameters as the percentage of filling and the direction of the printing filaments. The studies used three sizes of standardized specimens for central tension, made using 3D printing technology. During the experiments, it was found that when determining the mechanical characteristics of a material, it is necessary to deviate from the hypothesis of material homogeneity and continuity, adopted in the strength of materials. To determine the values of mechanical characteristics for samples of different sizes, a technique was proposed for calculating the real cross-sectional area of the structure under study. The article presents tensile diagrams and the mechanical characteristics of the material of additive structures calculated from them, as well as the issue of the influence of the ratio of the structure area to the perimeter area on the mechanical characteristics of the material.

It is implemented the method of normal rectangular sections slab (shell) reinforced concrete elements strength calculating with flat eccentric tensile strength using the deformation m ethod. The results of the calculation are analyzed for the case of eccentric tension with small eccentricities with varying next parameters: the height of the cross section and the reinforcement coefficient. It is investigated the character of diagrams condition change of section “N – εc(1)” at gradual change of the stress-strain state from eccentric to the central tension. It is revealed that when the eccentricity of external forces decreases, the compressed zone of concrete decreases until its complete disappearance, and at rather small values of eccentricities of force application the balance between external and internal forces cannot be found by the method of current norms. An equilibrium is found between internal and external forces only at a two-digit diagram of the distribution of relative longitudinal deformations (in the case of a compressed zone). Variants of the given problem decision without considerable loss of calculations accuracy are offered, the most expedient of which is transition to algorithm of calculation by a method of limiting efforts. It was accepted as the basic in the previous building norms. The results of numerical calculations performed in the software complex “Lira-CAD” and the corresponding mathematical modeling confirmed the rationality and allowable accuracy of further calculations by this method.

Background: With the growing use of social networks, a large number of studies have investigated their psychological effects. Previous research has demonstrated that virtual networks, especially Instagram, negatively affect users’ mental health and make them vulnerable to mental disorders. However, the studies have been descriptive and provide descriptive statements; hence, they do not contribute to in-depth understanding of such vulnerability. Accordingly, qualitative studies should be conducted to delve into this phenomenon. Objectives: This article aimed to understand the key personality traits of popular Iranian Instagram users, assuming that the networks make individuals psychoanalytically vulnerable to clinical outcomes. Methods: Regarding the research method, the deductive content analysis was adopted for the data extracted from semi-structured in-depth interviews with users having > 10,000 followers. Psychodynamic diagnostic manual, PDM-2 second edition, and the structured analysis matrix were considered to make sense of the collected data. Results: The results demonstrated that the dominant key personality traits in popular Instagram users were narcissism with three subcategories (namely narcissistic central tension, pathogenic belief about oneself, and pathogenic belief about others) and depression with two subcategories (namely depressive pathogenic belief about oneself and pathogenic belief about others). Conclusions: According to the findings, the structures and categories underpinning our experiences by Instagram are inherently narcissistic. Rather than changing individuals’ dynamics, Instagram promotes this intellectual and communicative style inversely by normalizing it and reinforcing the narcissistic personality disorder established by the family and cultural structure of society.

The introduction to Practicing Atheism familiarizes the reader with contemporary atheist culture through a brief description of a billboard campaign sponsored by the Freedom from Religion Foundation. This chapter situates the larger work within a growing body of scholarship on secularism and atheism, suggesting that the cultural studies approach of this book makes a novel contribution to the field of secular studies. The introduction explains the book’s approach to media, both theoretically and methodologically, suggesting that there is no separating culture from media. Finally, the introduction lays out the theoretical argument of the book, which accounts for the central tension of contemporary atheist culture: the fact that organized atheism comes to bear a resemblance to what we (and atheists themselves) think of as religion. Ritual theory is introduced as a tool for explaining this tension.

Holmes on Homes is a Canadian home improvement television program and the centrepiece of HGTV (Home and Garden Television), featuring Mike Holmes as the series’ star contractor and host. This paper argues that by looking back at earlier incarnations of film and television melodrama, we can determine the way in which Holmes on Homes reinvents the home improvement subgenre. By playing out reality TV’s central tension between fiction and non-fiction, Holmes on Homes reveals its larger themes of justice and redemption, which befit its unique position between the documentary and the classic melodrama.

This study aims to better understand the modern evolution of the workplace not only as a place to work but also increasingly as a place to live. Current research largely excludes the instrumental aspects of this blurring of personal and professional spheres at work, as manifested in an intentional dissolution of the boundaries between work and non-work activities. To understand the meaning and implications of these new workplaces, which rely on a central tension between care and control and tend to reinterpret paternalism as an organizing principle, this study develops a conceptual framework derived from Michel Foucault’s concept of pastoral power. This framework helps make sense of a caring mode of power that marks modern organizations. The application of this framework—using a qualitative case study of a French company’s home-like working environment—suggests a processual and constructivist conceptualization of these workplaces as a manifestation of pastoral power, embedded in a broader governmentality strategy. It emphasizes the material and discursive construction of the workplace as a place to live and highlights the emergence of neo-paternalism as a new form of care and control. This critical perspective informs discussion on the implications of this caring mode of control for workers, in a hopeful call to stay alert to modern capitalist intrigues.

Witt begins by observing that although the short story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” is often anthologized and has long been a staple of high school curricula and the subject of music videos, television, and film, it is not typically thought of as a study in the dilemmas of humanitarian law. But, Witt argues, it is just that. The story depicts an execution for violation of the laws of war. Its author was a Union Army veteran. Moreover, the text embodies a central tension in the laws of war, one that emerged in Bierce’s time and persists today. On the one hand stands a sentimental humanitarianism that aims to minimize the human suffering of war. On the other, a righteous humanitarianism chafes at the constraints that sentimental humanitarianism places on the pursuit of justice. Witt demonstrates that Bierce’s “Owl Creek” straddles the two planks of the modern laws of war, conveying the power of both views.

Social security systems confront a central tension: how to reconcile welfare retrenchment with the political challenges with implementing these reforms. One way in which policy makers have responded to this tension is by repurposing existing institutions to serve new ends. We investigate the system of Universal Credit (UC) in the UK as an example of such a ‘conversion’. UC expands the mantra of ‘active citizenship’ to a much larger population than ever before. However, far from producing uniform outcomes, UC’s implementation has been marked by chaos and ultimately failure for individuals and communities. We argue that UC exemplifies a broader shift from social security to state-sanctioned social insecurity as policy reforms come to mimic the insecurities and risks commonly associated with the market

Chapter 11, “Podemos: A Hybrid Party?” traces the evolution of Podemos from its inception through its two constituent assemblies to address the question of whether movement and party logics can ever be reconciled. This chapter provides an analysis of the tensions and contradictions of hybrid parties. Hybrid or movement parties—initially at least—need to satisfy and maintain legitimacy with their movement base, which in the case of Podemos is 15-M. Since its inception, Podemos has struggled to satisfy the expectations of its activist base and to strike a balance between (horizontal) movement and (vertical) party, a challenge all the more difficult given the 15-M movement’s commitment to participatory democracy. The chapter explores the central tension between movement and party by analyzing internal and 15-M movement critiques of the party and the challenges it faces in trying to maintain the support of its activist grassroots base.
