A just transition that achieves decent work for all, social inclusion and poverty eradication is unlikely to occur without active guidance. Much of the focus for making a just transition a reality is at a more abstract policy scale, and a gap exists for concrete guidance in achieving a just transition in a practical sense. This article provides two frameworks – at a project scale, and at an organisational scale – for assessing alignment with a just transition. It uses the example of energy to illustrate both the scale of the challenge being faced, and how such frameworks could be applied in practice.

Abstract In 2013, Sterigenics undertook the addition of a 10-MeV electron beam (e-beam) accelerator at its facility in Jarinu, Brazil. A gamma irradiator was already located at this facility, which processed materials and provided irradiation services in Brazil. The decision to implement an e-beam accelerator at the same facility was made in order to diversify the technology that could be offered and to rapidly increase the overall capacity of the facility. In addition, the e-beam technology was complementary to the existing gamma pallet irradiator and thus provided an internal backup for some processes. The main challenge for staff at the Brazil facility was cross-validating processes carried out by the existing gamma irradiator with processes performed with the new e-beam accelerator. The overall success rate in the cross-validation of processes between the two modalities was positive. Products for healthcare, laboratory testing, and other low-bulk-density products that basically consisted of commonly used polymeric materials were most suitable for cross-validation. Products of higher bulk density, greater heterogeneity, or variability between packaging systems and products with dose specifications for a tote rather than a pallet gamma irradiator presented limitations in the cross-validation success rate. This article focuses on the transition approach, discusses the types of products that were successfully cross-validated in e-beam from gamma, and presents examples where such cross-validation was not pursued.

Abstract Highly accurate self-replication of cellular phenotype is a requirement for biological evolution. I previously investigated the degree of self-replication fidelity needed in a viable, evolving population of living cells. Here I present a phase transition approach from non-living chemical complexity to evolving living creatures and illustrate the necessary non-continuity of whatever process led to the origin of evolution. A theoretical approach to the relationship between replication fidelity, survival probability and the capacity to grow and evolve is presented consistent with previous data from experimental simulations. The implications for the origin of life to include explanations for non-continuity are discussed.

Abstract Bilingualism as it occurs in current societies is a complex, multidimensional and dynamic phenomenon, calling for new approaches to capture this concept. This study shows the feasibility of a person-centred approach by combining measures of the use of and proficiency in the first and second language from 110 young Turkish–Dutch children at two measurement waves, using two existing datasets. Latent Profile Analysis revealed four profiles, equivalent at age four and six: 1) Dominant L1 use, relatively low L1 and L2 proficiency, 2) Dual L1 and L2 use, around average L1 and L2 proficiency, 3) Dominant L1 use, relatively high L1 and L2 proficiency and 4) Dominant L2 use, relatively high L2 proficiency. Latent Transition Analysis indicated that children changed in profiles over time. Regression analyses showed that profiles were differently related to the family's socioeconomic status and children's nonverbal intelligence at age four. No relations were found at age six.

In this paper, a non-equilibrium thermodynamic approach to cancer is developed. The thermo-electric effects in the cell membrane are analysed, in relation to the Seebeck-like and the Peltier-like effects. The role of the cell membrane electric potential is studied from a thermodynamic viewpoint, pointing out the relation between the proliferation rate and the membrane potential, the existence of a thermodynamic threshold for the mitotic activity, the relation between metastases and membrane potential and the comprehension of the role of ions fluxes in the cell behaviour.
