Teaching qualities in piano works by Henryk Pachulski in the context of the development of piano technique in children and youth. Part 1

Henryk Pachulski (1852-1921) – a Polish composer, pianist, and teacher. He graduated from the Warsaw Institute of Music, having studied piano with Rudolf Strobl. His harmony and counterpoint teachers were Stanisław Moniuszko and Władysław Żeleński. After that, he studied piano at the Moscow Conservatory with Nicolai Rubinstein and then Pawel Pabst. He learnt harmony from E. L. Langer, then Anton Arensky with whom he also had a special course in counterpoint. In 1886 he started his teaching career at the Moscow Conservatory, which lasted over 30 years. He also performed as a pianist in Moscow, Petersburg, and Warsaw. Pachulski was acknowledged for his technical aptitude, but he gained the greatest recognition as a teacher and a composer. He created over a hundred piano works, including three sonatas, two cycles of variations, two polonaises, two mazurkas, three waltzes, preludes, studies, impromptus, and more. He also wrote chamber, vocal and orchestra compositions, as well as piano transcriptions for orchestra and chamber pieces. This article presents the composer’s music and teaching activity, it also touches on teaching qualities of his piano works. It pays special attention to technical aspects, and the analysis also covers the formal side of these compositions. While preparing the text, the author used information included in the Polish music press from the turn of the 20th century, music collection of the National Library in Warsaw, archive documents, and foreign sources.

Collezioni cartografiche e digital humanities per una nuova fruizione del patrimonio: il caso della Biblioteca Estense Universitaria di Modena

Digital humanities is an emerging discipline that has become increasingly popular in recent years, thanks to the implementation of numerous projects that aim at a dynamic dialogue between digital technologies and humanistic research. This is the scope of the project launched by the Biblioteca Estense Universitaria (BEU) di Modena in 2017, which, in collaboration with the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, included the study, cataloguing and digitization of the cartographic collection, along with the music collection and the Muratorian collection. This project led to the creation of a digital library, inaugurated in June 2020, which not only allowed the enhancement of the cartographic collection, still little known, and to make it available, albeit only virtually, to scholars, but also led to the adoption of the IIIF protocol that allows to compare, edit, annotate and share the documents of the Este collection and collections that participate in the same circuit, providing new useful tools for research. In this context, the contribution, starting from the presentation of the Estense Digital Library project, presents the cartographic collection of the BEU and offers a reflection on the potential that the new digital media provide for the study of cartography and, more broadly, of heritage in the digital age.

Previously Unknown Sources for Johann Philipp Kirnberger’s Flute Sonatas Found in the Former Rzewuski Music Collection from Podhorce (Pidhirtsi)

The music-related sources kept at Tarnów Municipal Library (Department of Early Prints and Nineteenth-Century Books) include manuscripts (PL-TAb 44, PL-TAb 45) which once belonged to the music collection of Wacław Rzewuski’s court ensemble in Podhorce (Pidhirtsi in Ukrainian). These manuscripts contain anonymously entered sonatas for flute and basso continuo, one of which has been recognised as the Sonata in E flat minor by Johann Philipp Kirnberger, previously only known from a Berlin copy. On the basis of comparative analysis with other extant sources, the Sonata in F sharp major found in the same manuscripts can also be attributed to Kirnberger.

‘Livres de Musique’ in the Leufsta Library

The De Geer family established themselves in Sweden as iron industrialists during the early seventeenth century, but they maintained close contact with the Netherlands. The family built up a prestigious library at Leufstabruk, in northern Uppland. The objects in the Leufsta Music Collection contained a significant amount of music in the form of printed sheet music and manuscripts, which were most likely gathered during the long lifetime of baron Charles De Geer (1720-1778). Compared to the works he collected in his youth in the Netherlands, the printed scores linked to Charles De Geer’s later period in Sweden show a change of taste in both repertoire and collecting behavior. This article deals with the bindings of the sheet music in the Leufsta collection, which give us clues of both De Geer’s acquisition and his approach to his music scores from their purchase to binding, labelling, cataloguing and practical use.

Gesture Controlled Music Player

A music player is a computer program for playing audio files or songs encoded in MP3 format. This application will reside in the user's computer, such as iTunes, Windows Media Player and RealPlayer that are used to organize a music collection and play audio files. Our player provides an easy-to-use graphical user interface with symbols provided on the buttons to enable varied types of users to use the player efficiently. Along with the basic functionalities of a music player like playing, pausing, stopping and playing next or previous song, we have provided some interesting features which make our player intelligent. Hence, we have rightly named it ‘Brain Waves Music Player’. It has the ability to judge our sentiments and play the suitable songs accordingly. Also, the player can be controlled using gestures.

Music Collection in a Digital Environment

The expansion of the scope and application of music and computer technologies in education is one of the current problems which academic training of students in pedagogical programs is facing. The focus of the article is the an attempt to apply a computer program for notation in the construction of an instrumental music collection intended for local use by students at the Faculty of Pedagogy of Trakia University.
