Digital humanities is an emerging discipline that has become increasingly popular in recent years, thanks to the implementation of numerous projects that aim at a dynamic dialogue between digital technologies and humanistic research. This is the scope of the project launched by the Biblioteca Estense Universitaria (BEU) di Modena in 2017, which, in collaboration with the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, included the study, cataloguing and digitization of the cartographic collection, along with the music collection and the Muratorian collection. This project led to the creation of a digital library, inaugurated in June 2020, which not only allowed the enhancement of the cartographic collection, still little known, and to make it available, albeit only virtually, to scholars, but also led to the adoption of the IIIF protocol that allows to compare, edit, annotate and share the documents of the Este collection and collections that participate in the same circuit, providing new useful tools for research. In this context, the contribution, starting from the presentation of the Estense Digital Library project, presents the cartographic collection of the BEU and offers a reflection on the potential that the new digital media provide for the study of cartography and, more broadly, of heritage in the digital age.

Isabel Galina is a researcher at the Instituto de Investigaciones Bibliográficas, a research institute for bibliographic studies at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, UNAM. The university is also home to the Biblioteca Nacional, Mexico’s national library. Isabel Galina discusses the emergence of digital humanities and her views on how DH works within this particular structure and related issues to do with understanding national bibliographical collections in the digital age, in particular regarding e-legal deposit and digital preservation. She discusses the difficulties in identifying, selecting, and incorporating born-digital materials. In the interview, Isabel Galina also describes how she got involved in DH, the creation of the Red de Humanidades Digitales (RedHD), and other DH developments in Mexico and Latin America. Finally, the conversation examines university and government support for DH as well as a look at DH works in Mexico in collaboration with other countries, and in particular hosting the international Digital Humanities conference in Mexico City in 2018.

The world is witnessing dramatic changes in the digital age, marking the advancement and rise of digital technologies that enable more efficient processing, transmission, storage and review of information. As digital technology is increasingly affecting all aspects of social life, innovation is considered the key to making competitiveness and sustainble development of individuals, organizations and the whole society. Innovation is the process of creating new values by applying new solutions to existing problems. And innovation culture is an enviroment that nurtures, promotes and realizes innovation. This shows that the formation of an individual’s innovation culture is essential to be able to build an innovation culture of the organization and even of society. Higher education is also not out of this trend. Therefore, it is necessary to study the innovation culture in the field of higher education, first, the university lecturer’s innovation culture. The article aims to clarify some issues related to innovation culture. On that basis, the content of the concept of university lecturer’s innovation culture will be analyzed, simultaneously, the impacts of the digital age on higher education in general and university lecturer in particular will be mentioned to highlight the role of university lecturer’s innovation culture in the new context of society.

A research project, begun in the fall of 2002, expects to tap the potential of the Internet for breaking down barriers and building tolerance and understanding through access to exemplary children’s books from all over the world. The creation of the International Children’s Digital Library (ICDL) is the focus of a five-year project being conducted by the University of Maryland/College Park and the Internet Archive with funding from the US National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The first part of this paper introduces the concept of digital humanities and the phases that some researchers note in the development of the humanities in new, digital media, as well as the role of digital humanities in the promotion of the marginalised literatures, particularly that written by women. The core example is the digital database Knjiženstvo, certain segments of which contain not only the data on the texts, but the digitised texts as well. In this paper, we pose the question on how databases can be involved in the creation of new knowledge at all educational levels. To this effect, we necessarily expand certain segments of the database to include those publications on which they already contain information. In relation to this, it has been observed that one of the greatest problems is the part of the database dealing with the periodicals – both women and feminist – and therefore, the second part of the paper is dedicated to this topic. We first analyze the terms women and feminist magazines, and afterwards, we consider the ways in which the materials from these periodicals could be gathered, classified and connected.

This chapter takes up the aesthetic implications of the technology of digital images. Taken together, digital technologies for production and presentation can be understood as the materials that, used for artistic ends, comprise the media of digital art. The challenge for this chapter is to defend medium-based artistic appreciation in the digital age. I argue that awareness of the uses to which an artist puts digital materials is crucial for understanding the particular embodied achievement that is that artist’s work. The kinds of image-based art examples used in this chapter are diverse. They include examples from earlier chapters but also films that rely on a digital workflow.

This chapter provides an overview of the book's main themes. The book draws on literary studies, media studies, and digital humanities, and focuses on the Arab world in a transnational context in order to examine the radical transformations affecting the way stories are told, dissent is expressed, and canons are produced in the new millennium. Focusing on new writing from Egypt and the Gulf, it explores these writings' fascination with and appropriation of digital media. These writings chart a particular redefinition of what Arab culture means in the digital age, pointing to the changing meaning of Arab culture (novels, authors, education, etc.) and of traditional codes of civility (adab) as a model of subjectivity in a context shaped by technological development and political upheaval.

This article discusses the burgeoning “collections as data” movement within the fields of digital libraries and digital humanities. Faculty at the University of Utah’s Marriott Library are developing a collections as data strategy by leveraging existing Digital Library and Digital Matters programs. By selecting various digital collections, small- and large-scale approaches to developing open datasets are explored. Five case studies chronicling this strategy are reviewed, along with testing the datasets using various digital humanities methods, such as text mining, topic modeling, and GIS (geographic information system).
