Abstract Background Autograft has been widely used in various orthopedic and dental surgery for its superior osteogenicity, osteoinductivity and osteoconductivity. But the available volume of the autograft is limited and the efficacy of it is highly affected by the condition of the patients. Therefore, growth factors such as Escherichia coli bone morphogenetic protein-2 (ErhBMP-2) has been widely used in some countries and regions with various carriers that could affect the effects of the growth factors. Demineralized bone matrix (DBM) has been widely used as a bone graft substitute and growth factor carrier, but its effect as a carrier of ErhBMP-2 was less investigated. Materials and methods Rat calvaria defect model was used in this study. We implanted ErhBMP-2 with DBM or hydroxyapatite (HA) as a carrier in 8 mm calvaria defect and compared their bone regeneration effect in 4th week and 8th week after implantation with micro-CT and histology. The data was analyzed with one-way ANOVA method with Bonferroni post-hoc analysis. Result The group with DBM as the carrier showed significantly higher bone volume and bone thickness than the groups with HA as the carrier in both weeks. And the histology sections showed less adipose tissue formed in the groups with DBM as the carrier. Conclusion DBM could be a better carrier for ErhBMP-2 than HA.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of tooth biomaterials as bone graft biomaterials for bone healing in rabbits. We prepared tooth biomaterial and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) to fill the round-shaped defect in the skull of New Zealand white rabbits. These cranial defects were treated with different conditions as follows: group 1, a mixture of tooth biomaterials and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF); group 2, only tooth biomaterials; group 3, only PRF; and group 4, the unfilled control group. Specimens of the filled sites were harvested for analysis with microscopic computerized tomography (micro-CT) and histomorphology at 4 and 8 weeks. As a result of micro-CT, at 4 weeks, the bone volume percentages in groups 1 and 2 were 50.33 ± 6.35 and 57.74 ± 3.13 , respectively, and that in the unfilled control group was 42.20 ± 10.53 ( p = 0.001 ). At 8 weeks, the bone volume percentages in groups 1 and 2 were 53.73 ± 9.60 and 54.56 ± 8.44 , respectively, and that in the unfilled control group was 37.86 ± 7.66 ( p = 0.002 ). The difference between the experimental group 3 and the unfilled control group was not statistically significant. Histomorphologically, the total new bone was statistically different.

One of the most important features of the three-way catalysts is their long-term stability. However, quite often, promising catalytic compositions with excellent activity become deactivated after a relatively short period of exploitation due to various reasons. Therefore, a study on the onboard regeneration of the deactivated three-way catalysts remains its actuality. The present work is mainly focused on the self-regeneration effect of the rhodium-containing component. Aging of the catalysts in the standard and model engine braking regimes revealed the difference in the catalytic performance. Deactivated rhodium species turned to the active state as a result of rapid cooling in air flow from 1200 to 600 °C. The regenerated catalyst shows improved activity towards NOx reduction and, therefore, widened operation window, which indicates higher accessibility of the rhodium species. X-ray diffraction analysis of the aged catalysts does not reveal any noticeable phase changes. Contrary, significant changes in the Rh oxidation state were registered by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The observed effect opens new horizons for the development of the onboard purification systems with prolonged exploitation lifetime.
