Experimental and theoretical study of submillimeter (terahertz) spectroscopic and magnetic properties of the rare-earth aluminum borate HoAl3(BO3)4 were performed at temperatures 3–300 K. In the transmittance spectra a number of resonance lines were detected at frequencies 2–35 cm–1 for different radiation polarizations. These modes were identified as transitions between the lower levels of the ground multiplet of the Ho3+ ion split by the crystal field, including both transitions from the ground state to the excited ones and transitions between the excited states. The established excitation conditions of the observed modes and the simulation of the spectra made it possible to separate the magnetic and electric dipole transitions and to determine the energies of the corresponding states, their symmetry, and the matrix elements of the transitions. Low-frequency lines that do not fit into the established picture of the electron states of Ho3+ were also found; these lines, apparently, correspond to the ions with the distorted by defects local symmetry of the crystal field.

The 4f-electronic structures of the ground multiplet states of a series of [Ln(TPP)(cyclen)]Cl (Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb; TPP = 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinato; cyclen = 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane) have been determined using experimental NMR and magnetic susceptibility data.

High-resolution spectra of oriented ErFe3(BO3)4 single crystals are registered in the spectral range 500 – 8000 cm-1 at various temperatures (4 – 470 K). The temperature behaviour of the phonon mode at 976 cm-1 allowed us to register a structural phase transition at TS=431 K. The energies of crystal-field levels of the ground 4I15/2 and the first excited 4I13/2 multiplets of the Er3+ ion are determined in the paramagnetic state of ErFe3(BO3)4. The exchange splitting of the ground Kramers doublet in the magnetically ordered state was found to be Δ0=6.3±1 cm-1. The interference occurring due to birefringence in the single crystals was also registered. The temperature dependence of the position of the maximum of the interference band demonstrates two anomalies, at TN and TS, associated with the phase transitions in ErFe3(BO3)4.

ABSTRACTWe investigated the magnetic excitations in polycrystalline samples of hard magnet related compounds DyFe4Al8 and DyMn4Al8 by neutron spectroscopy. For both compounds the magnetic spectra at energies below 40 meV are dominated by the response of the Dy3+ ions. In DyMn4Al8 we observed pure crystal-field transitions within the Dy3+ J=15/2 ground multiplet which is split into 8 doublets under the low point-group symmetry of 4/mmm. In DyFe4Al8 the Dy crystal-field-split states are perturbed by the molecular fields of the ordered Fe sublattice.

High-resolution emission spectra of several europium complexes with β-diketones, dipyridyl, and phenanthroline have been examined at 77°K in microcrystals. The Stark splitting of the 7 F levels in the ground multiplet and the relative intensities of the individual 5 D0→7 F transitions can be used for theoretical correlation with the ligand field parameters, transition probabilities, molecular structure, and Eu-ligand bonding. The fluorescence spectra of the bis-aqua, tris, tris-aqua, tetrakis, and mixed chelates with the bidentate ligands are discussed in relation to molecular configuration.
