AbstractThe prethalamic eminence (PThE), a diencephalic caudal neighbor of the telencephalon and alar hypothalamus, is frequently described in mammals and birds as a transient embryonic structure, undetectable in the adult brain. Based on descriptive developmental analysis of Tbr1 gene brain expression in chick embryos, we previously reported that three migratory cellular streams exit the PThE rostralward, targeting multiple sites in the hypothalamus, subpallium and septocommissural area, where eminential cells form distinct nuclei or disperse populations. These conclusions needed experimental corroboration. In this work, we used the homotopic quail-chick chimeric grafting procedure at stages HH10/HH11 to demonstrate by fate-mapping the three predicted tangential migration streams. Some chimeric brains were processed for Tbr1 in situ hybridization, for correlation with our previous approach. Evidence supporting all three postulated migration streams is presented. The results suggested a slight heterochrony among the juxtapeduncular (first), the peripeduncular (next), and the eminentio-septal (last) streams, each of which followed differential routes. A possible effect of such heterochrony on the differential selection of medial to lateral habenular hodologic targets by the migrated neurons is discussed.

Abstract HDD heads have various interaction mechanisms with thermal asperities (TAs), and protection mechanisms need to be put in place to ensure the head-disk interaction (HDI) resulting from them is eliminated or minimized to the highest extent possible. It is straightforward to not allow the head sit-on-track on cylinders that have such TAs on them, and the same principle can be extended to so-called high TAs (HTAs), whose height is more than the fly height of the head, so heads do not inadvertently interact with the TA even when motion is triggered on another head, since the entire head stack moves together. Similar TA interactions also occur when the head seeks across the tracks. Typical short seeks have thermal fly-height control (TFC) turned on while it is turned on during long seeks, which is greater than a few hundred tracks. Heads can also interact with TAs during retract and arrival of the head during such long seeks. Finally, background media scan (BGMS), which is an industry standard, when the drive enters an idle state. Interaction with HTAs can also occur when the drive enters such a state. Typical seek avoidance attempts to eliminate TA interaction during seeking, however it is not straightforward to determine which of the seek mechanism: TFC On during short seeks, retract/arrival during long seeks, HTA interaction during long seeks with TFC off, or idle TA interaction causes the greatest HDI. Through theoretical analysis and experimental corroboration, this paper intends to rank the various modes of TA interaction, so by developing features for eliminating or minimizing them in that order could help bring the maximum benefit for achieving minimum lifetime reduction of the head due to such interaction.

Abstract This article considers market-level contributors to the well-documented gender profit gap among micro-entrepreneurs. We combine data from a garment-making firm census and market research survey in Ghana, uncovering a gender gap in the market-size-to-firm ratio and observing disproportionate self-reports of ‘not enough customers’ from female owners. We develop a simple model and discuss implications of potential gender differences in demand constraints. As experimental corroboration, we show that female-owned firms expand production and experience profit increases in response to random demand shocks, while male-owned firms do not. Nationally representative data echoes our experimental findings, showing more crowding in female-dominated industries.

Silicene, a Si-based analogue of graphene, is predicted to exhibit topological electronic phases with exotic properties capable to revolutionize electronics. In particular, the silicene structure is highly advantageous for spintronics. However, lack of synthetic routes to free-standing and magnetically functionalized silicene compounds prevents experimental corroboration of the predictions. Here we synthesize EuSi2, multilayer silicene intercalated with inherently magnetic Eu atoms, on SrSi2/Si(001) templates. The resulting films are formed by crystallites of two mutually orthogonal orientations. The structure is firmly established with electron diffraction, X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The compound EuSi2 exhibits non-trivial magnetic and transport properties. The data are compared with those for EuSi2 films grown on SrSi2/Si(111) templates.
