Abstract Background: Currently, numerous investigations are ongoing into the interaction of free radicals with biological systems such as lipids, DNA and protein. Methods: In the present work, synthesis, characterization, antioxidant, DNA binding and molecular docking studies of Schiff base ligand and its Ni(II), Co(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) were evaluated. Results: The metal complexes shown significant dose-dependent antioxidant activities comparable to the classical antioxidants, ascorbic acid and ethylene diaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). The DNA binding constants (kb) were found to be 3.487×10-5M-1, 1.858×10-5M-1, 3.090×10-5M-1, 1.367×10-5M-1 and 9.118×10-5M-1 for Ni(II), Co(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) metal complexes, respectively. Binding constants (Kb) and free energy (∆G) values calculated from molecular docking analysis were found to be in close agreement with experimental results. Conclusion: The obtained results indicate the importance of synthesis complexes as a source of synthetic antioxidants and anticancer drugs.

A cross-sectional study was carried out to determine the current status of Brucella antibodies in goats in Kaduna North Senatorial District of Kaduna State, Nigeria. A total of 442 serum samples (31 bucks and 411 does) were screened using Rose Bengal plate test (RBPT), serum agglutination test with ethylene diaminetetraacetic acid (SAT-EDTA), and lateral flow assay (LFA). Results. The prevalence of Brucella antibodies was found to be 25.8%, 11.1%, and 2.5% using RBPT, SAT-EDTA, and LFA, respectively. The prevalence in bucks was 32.3%, 3.2%, and 0.0% and 17.5%, 12.4%, and 3.9% in does using RBPT, SAT-EDTA, and LFA, respectively. The prevalence rates for goats less than one year of age using the tests were 1.5%, 0.0%, and 0.0%. While for those within the age bracket of one to three years, the rates were 19.4%, 10.5%, and 3.5%, respectively. The corresponding values for goats above 3 years of age were 34.2%, 15.2%, and 1.8%, respectively. The prevalence of brucellosis in goats in the study area is high which poses a threat to the development of the livestock industry and is of important zoonotic implications in Nigeria.

An extracellular beta amylase was induced in cultures of Bacillus subtilis isolated from the kolanut weevil, Balanogastris kolae grown in liquid medium that contained kolanut starch as sole carbon source. The enzyme was partially purified 1.28-fold by acid treatment with ice cold 1.0N HCl and 6.4-fold by gel filtration with Sephadex G-150. The beta amylase had a molecular weight of 39.4 kDa .The enzyme had its optimal activity at pH 5.0 and exhibited maximal activity at temperature of 50oC. The activity of the enzyme was enhanced by Na+, Ca2+  and ethylene diaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), while Hg2+ ,Mg2+ and  Fe2+ acted as inhibitors of its activity. The beta amylase had an apparent Michaelis constant Km of 5.0 mg/ml and maximum velocity (Vmax) of 50 U/mg proteins.

he E. histolytica parasite was maintained in vitro using Locke-egg medium (LEM) and Liver infusion agar medium (LIAM). The effect of two calcium antagonists (Nifedipine and Ethylene-diaminetetraacetic acid EDTA) on the growth and activity of the parasite in the two culture media was investigated. The calcium antagonists Nifedipine and EDTA inhibited the reproduction rate of E. histolytica in a concentration-dependent manner. For Nifedipine, a concentration of 41.6 mg/ml inhibited the reproduction rate to 99.7% in both media. The EDTA had an approximate effect (98.2 and 95.8)% at a concentration of 0.83 mg/ml in LEM and LIAM media, respectively. Additionally, some cases of a parasite encystment were observed in LEM medium that was treated with Nifedipine.
