The growing interest in soft robotics has resulted in an increased demand for accurate and reliable material modelling. As soft robots experience high deformations, highly nonlinear behavior is possible. Several analytical models that are able to capture this nonlinear behavior have been proposed, however, accurately calibrating them for specific materials and applications can be challenging. Multiple experimental testbeds may be required for material characterization which can be expensive and cumbersome. In this work, we propose an alternative framework for parameter fitting established hyperelastic material models, with the aim of improving their utility in the modelling of soft continuum robots. We define a minimization problem to reduce fitting errors between a soft continuum robot deformed experimentally and its equivalent finite element simulation. The soft material is characterized using four commonly employed hyperelastic material models (Neo Hookean; Mooney–Rivlin; Yeoh; and Ogden). To meet the complexity of the defined problem, we use an evolutionary algorithm to navigate the search space and determine optimal parameters for a selected material model and a specific actuation method, naming this approach as Evolutionary Inverse Material Identification (EIMI). We test the proposed approach with a magnetically actuated soft robot by characterizing two polymers often employed in the field: Dragon Skin™ 10 MEDIUM and Ecoflex™ 00-50. To determine the goodness of the FEM simulation for a specific set of model parameters, we define a function that measures the distance between the mesh of the FEM simulation and the experimental data. Our characterization framework showed an improvement greater than 6% compared to conventional model fitting approaches at different strain ranges based on the benchmark defined. Furthermore, the low variability across the different models obtained using our approach demonstrates reduced dependence on model and strain-range selection, making it well suited to application-specific soft robot modelling.

AbstractPersistent homology is an effective topological data analysis tool to quantify the structural and morphological features of soft materials, but so far it has not been used to characterise the dynamical behaviour of complex soft matter systems. Here, we introduce structural heterogeneity, a topological characteristic for semi-ordered materials that captures their degree of organisation at a mesoscopic level and tracks their time-evolution, ultimately detecting the order-disorder transition at the microscopic scale. We show that structural heterogeneity tracks structural changes in a liquid crystal nanocomposite, reveals the effect of confined geometry on the nematic-isotropic and isotropic-nematic phase transitions, and uncovers physical differences between these two processes. The system used in this work is representative of a class of composite nanomaterials, partially ordered and with complex structural and physical behaviour, where their precise characterisation poses significant challenges. Our developed analytic framework can provide both a qualitative and quantitative characterisation of the dynamical behaviour of a wide range of semi-ordered soft matter systems.

The linkage of metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) for the synthesis of porous soft materials is one of the promising strategies to combine processability with permanent porosity. Compared to the defined internal cavity of MOPs, it is still difficult to control the extrinsic porosities generated between crosslinked MOPs because of their random arrangements in their networks. Herein, we report a method to form linked MOP gels with controllable extrinsic porosities by introducing negative charges on the surface of MOPs that facilitates electrostatic repulsion between them. A hydrophilic rhodium-based cuboctahedral MOP (OHRhMOP) with 24 hydroxyl groups on its outer periphery can be controllably deprotonated to impart the MOP with tunable electrostatic repulsion in solution. This electrostatic repulsion between MOPs stabilizes the kinetically trapped state, in which a MOP is coordinated with various bisimidazole linkers in a monodentate fashion at a controllable link-er/MOP ratio. The heating of the kinetically trapped molecules leads to the formation of gels with similar colloidal networks but different extrinsic porosity. This strategy allows us to design the molecular-level networks and the resulting porosities even in the amorphous state.

Controlling the polymerization of supramolecular self-assembly through external stimuli holds great potential for the development of responsive soft materials and manipulation at the nanoscale. Vinyl esters of bis(leu or val)fumaramide (1a and 2a) have been found to be gelators of various organic solvents and were applied in this investigation of the influence of organogelators’ self-assembly on solid-state polymerization induced by gamma and ultraviolet irradiation. Here, we report our investigation into the influences of self-assemblies of bis(amino acid vinyl ester)fumaramides on gamma-ray- and ultraviolet-induced polymerization. The gelator molecules self-assembled by non-covalent interactions, mainly through hydrogen bonds between the amide group (CONH) and the carboxyl group (COO), thus forming a gel network. NMR and FTIR spectroscopy were used to investigate and characterize supramolecular gels. TEM and SEM microscopy were used to investigate the morphology of gels and polymers. Morphology studies showed that the gels contained a filamentous structure of nanometer dimensions that was exhaustive in a three-dimensional network. The prepared derivatives contained reactive alkyl groups suitable for carrying out the polymerization reaction initiated by gamma or ultraviolet radiation in the supramolecular aggregates of selected gels. It was found that the polymerization reaction occurred only in the network of the gel and was dependent on the structure of aggregates or the proximity and orientation of double bonds in the gel network. Polymers were formed by the gels exposure to gamma and ultraviolet radiation in toluene, and water/DMF gels with transcripts of their gel structure into polymers. The polymeric material was able to immobilize various solvents by swelling. Furthermore, methyl esters of bis(leu and val)fumaramide (1b and 2b) were synthesized; these compounds showed no gelling properties, and the crystal structure of the valine derivative 2b was determined.

Through years of evolution, biological soft fibrous tissues have developed remarkable functional properties, unique hierarchical architectures, and -most notably, an unparalleled and extremely efficient deformation ability. Whereas the structure-function relationship is well-studied in natural hard materials, soft materials are not getting similar attention, despite their high prevalence in nature. These soft materials are usually constructed as fiber-reinforced composites consisting of diverse structural motifs that result in an overall unique mechanical behavior with large deformations. Biomimetics of their mechanical behavior is currently a significant bioengineering challenge. The unique properties of soft fibrous tissues stem from their structural complexity, which, unfortunately, also hinders our ability to generate adequate synthetic analogs, such that autografts remain the “gold standard” materials for soft-tissue repair and replacement. This review seeks to understand the structural and deformation mechanisms of soft collagenous tissues, with a particular emphasis on tendon and ligaments, the annulus fibrosus (AF) in the intervertebral disc (IVD), skin, and blood vessels. We examined and compared different mechanical and structural motifs in these different tissue types, which are subjected to complex and varied mechanical loads, to isolate the mechanisms of their deformation behavior. Herein, we focused on their composite structure from a perspective of the different building blocks, architecture, crimping patterns, fiber orientation, organization and their structure-function relationship. In the second part of the review, we presented engineered soft composite applications that used these structural motifs to mimic the structural and mechanical behavior of soft fibrous tissues. Moreover, we demonstrated new methodologies and materials that use biomimetic principles as a guide. These novel architectural materials have tailor-designed J-shaped large deformations behavior. Structural motifs in soft composites hold valuable insights that could be exploited to generate the next generation of materials. They actually have a two-fold effect: 1) to get a better understanding of the complex structure-function relationship in a simple material system using reverse biomimetics and 2) to develop new and efficient materials. These materials could revolutionize the future tailor-designed soft composite materials together with various soft-tissue repair and replacement applications that will be mechanically biocompatible with the full range of native tissue behaviors.
