For a genealogist, each birth, baptism, marriage and death certificate is a valuable source of research. It turns out, however, that genealogists in their work encounter obstacles related to the restriction of access to these sources. This “brake” is legal regulations that can effectively discourage a genealogist from continuing their research. The aim of this article is to present the legal issues of genealogical research, especially in terms of the practice of applying the law and emerging problems in jurisprudence. In her article, the author presented the currently existing legal regulations, which in some cases may hinder genealogists from accessing searches, including legal problems related to the EU Regulation on the Protection of Personal Data (GDPR) in force since May 2018. The article also presents the problem of access to genealogical research from its practical side, recalling the decisions of Provincial Administrative Courts and the Supreme Administrative Court.

Indexation of record books is one of the most important tasks related to genealogical research. Proper selection of the form, as well as the use of the appropriate form of indexation are the basic activities before starting the creation of the database, which is its final result. Thanks to this, you can find information about your ancestors very quickly. Indexation is an extremely difficult and arduous work, and during it we can come across many pitfalls that may result in entering incorrect data. The development of indexation, as well as the often accompanying digitization, are extremely important activities aimed at preserving and protecting record books, as well as civil status books from destruction.

The Archives of the Krakow City Hall, located from 2018 in the new seat at Na Załęczu 2 has a collection of files of approximately 19,800 running meters. Among them are documents that are extremely helpful in conducting genealogical research. These include registration books, residents ‘registers, residents’ personal cards and ID envelopes with the records of issued identity cards. The collection of registration books is about 265 linear meters. The oldest of them come from the 1930s. The books were kept separately for individual buildings. They contain records regarding registration, residents’ personal data, information about the profession and position held, religion, nationality and attitude to military service. The registers of permanent residents, introduced in 1961, replaced the registration books. They were assumed separately for each apartment. They entered the real estate address, personal data of residents, the period of registration, the place of the previous registration and the place where the resident moved. In 1975 they were replaced by the Resident Personal Cards (KOM). The idea behind the Resident’s Personal Card was to assign it to a person, not an address. KOM included personal and registration data and, for the first time, the PESEL number. Successive addresses were entered on the card. The previous address of the resident was also entered. The collection of personal cards of residents has about 350 running meters. The set of evidence envelopes is an extremely valuable collection. By evidence envelopes, we mean all documentation related to the issuance of identity cards. The envelopes contain the name and surname of the owner, date of birth, PESEL number, series and number of the ID card. The envelopes contain old questionnaires, birth certificates, registration certificates, work certificates, photos and military documents. Old identity cards, such as pre-war ID cards and identity cards, have also been preserved. The documentation collected in the archive, consisting of registration books, registers, residents’ personal cards, and envelopes of ID cards, forms a collection of about 980 linear meters and is an excellent source for genealogical research, the more valuable that it is preserved in its entirety. The collected files have never been shredded, they are well preserved, organized and recorded.

The history of many families has a tradition of ties with Krakow, the effect of which is the search for documents that confirm this. A search can be made on the Internet in printed materials, e.g. address books, published in Krakow from 1905, containing alphabetical lists of residents, lists of property owners, representatives of particular professions, offices along with the names of officials. The censuses of the population of the city of Krakow from 1850-1921, preserved in the resources of the National Archives in Krakow, are made available on the Internet on the websiteukajwarchiwach.gov.pl. Gradually, more and more archives are presented there, among others civil status files. However, due to the limitations of the possibility of publishing data on the Internet by state archives, some archival materials invaluable for genealogists are still available only in archival reading rooms, e.g. applications for issuing identity cards or files of inheritance cases conducted by courts. An important source for researchers are school files collected by the Archive and documentation concerning the course of employment, for example, of railway workers, teachers, notaries, doctors and officials.

The aim of the article is to present selected types of printed sources of biographical information, showing that it is contained not only in biographical dictionaries. Various traces of human life can also be found in such publications as: parish books published in print; school management reports; lists of students or university graduates; lists of theses; address books of cities; telephone directories; street lists, publications about real estate owners; shematisms; lists of trade representatives; listings of business owners; industry directory books; activity reports or professional journals issued by organizations, associations or unions; spa guest lists; lists of participants in uprisings; lists of the injured; lists of repressed people; hourglasses, obituaries, mourning records; lists of personal losses from the years of war and occupation; cemetery guides. Selected examples of each of these types of sources show what kind of information they can contain. The second part of the article provides basic tips on how to search for such publications in the rich collections of the Jagiellonian Library, who and where can use the found materials.

An interest in the fate of ancestors influences the overall way we perceive the past, above all, how we understand history through their prism. The title fashion for genealogy is inextricably linked with technological development - quick access to historical sources published on the Internet. Provision of this type of service has become an important element of the global economy. Global genealogy websites have billions of user profiles, indexed and digitized documents in their databases. Genealogists around the world organize into groups, associations, to structure the process by which genealogical information is more accessible. Genealogical DNA tests are also becoming more and more popular - they help to go back much further in the family history than the preserved written sources allow. Genealogy is also a field of science that is increasingly present in traditional media as well as in scientific discourse - it is the subject of symposia, conferences and scientific publications both local and international. The Polish market of genealogy services is much smaller than the American market, but also consists of thriving organizations and commercial companies. One of them is Your Roots in Poland, which presents the entire range of this type of services offered in our country.

These metrics have so far been used for in-depth scientific research by a small number of researchers. The most important information about the books and the content of the metrics will be presented. In addition, sources are presented that can supplement the information found in the records. In the last part of the work, we list – subjective – the most common threats from Wieliczka record books that people looking for their ancestors in Wieliczka will encounter.
