AbstractThin films of boron carbon nitride (BCN) and boron carbide (BC) were synthesized by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) using two different reactant chemistries: (i) N,N’,N” – trimethylborazine (TMB); (ii) dilute diborane (5% in Ar) and hydrocarbon as precursor materials. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, Nano-Indentor, Flexus stress instrument and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to study the deposited films. The BC films are much more stable than BCN films under high humidity (100%) environment. Both BCN and BC films are very stable under atmospheric conditions. A high compressive stress of -4.2 GPA was achieved by conventional PECVD, which show promising applications in high performance ultra large-scale integrated circuit (ULSI) devices.

Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy was used to determine elastic constants and internal friction parameters of bulk nanoparticle-based ceramic materials compacted by spark plasma sintering. Boron nitride-based and boron carbon nitride-based materials were studied, and the results were compared with similar bulk materials prepared from graphene nanoplatelets. The results showed that such nanoparticle-based materials can be strongly anisotropic, and can have very different elastic constants depending on the nanoparticles used. From the temperature dependence of the internal friction parameters, the activation energy for sliding of the individual monolayers along each other was determined for each material. Very similar values of the activation energy were obtained for boron nitride, boron carbon nitride, and graphene, ranging from 15 to 17 kJ/mol.

Mesoporous carbon nitride materials have been synthesized using SBA-15 by pore filling technique whereas mesoporous boron nitride and boron carbon nitride have been prepared by elemental substitution technique using mesoporous carbon as template. The obtained materials have been unambiguously characterized by sophisticated techniques such as XRD, HRTEM, EELS, XPS, FT-IR and N2 adsorption. The textural parameters of the materials are quite higher as compared to the respective nonporous nitrides. These materials could offer great potential for the applications, such as catalytic supports, gas storage, biomolecule adsorption and drug delivery.
