AbstractA rapid access to a series of N-heteroarene fluorophores has been developed on the basis of the palladium-catalyzed direct oxidative C–H/C–H coupling of imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines with thiophenes/furans. The photophysical properties–structure relationship was systematically investigated. The resulting N-heteroarene fluorophores present color-tunable emissions (λem: 431–507 nm in CH2Cl2) and high fluorescence quantum yields (up to 91% in CH2Cl2).

The present results reveal that the dominant charge transfer characteristics in the S1 and T1 states produce a small energy difference between the two states, and consequently an efficient reverse intersystem crossing process and a high fluorescence efficiency.

AbstractA new Schiff base, 4-allylamine-N-(N-5-methylsalicylidene)-1,8-naphthalimide (1), has been designed and synthesized by combining a 1,8-naphthalimide moiety as a fluorophore and a Schiff base as a recognition group. Its photophysical properties were investigated by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, and this sensor exhibits a high fluorescence quantum yield of 0.75–0.91 inorganic solvents of different polarity. It also shows high selectivity for Cu2+ over other ions with fluorescence quenching in aqueous medium (pH=7.2). The reason for this phenomenon (fluorescence quenching) is attributed to the formation of a 1:1 complex between 1 and Cu2+ according to the Job plot and fluorescence titration. The sensor can be applied to the quantification of Cu2+ in a linear fashion from 0.5 to 5 μM with a detection limit of 0.23 μM. Additionally, the association constant (Ka) between Cu2+ and 1 is 1.328×106 M−1 in aqueous media.

Quantum dots (QDs) have attracted great attention due to their unique optical properties. High fluorescence efficiency is very important for their practical application. In this study, we report a simple and efficient strategy to enhance the photoluminescence of water-dispersed thiol-capped QDs using γ-radiation. Three kinds of QDs with different surface ligands and cores (MPA-CdTe, MPA-CdSe and Cys-CdTe) were fabricated and irradiated by high-energy γ-ray in an aqueous solution. Their photoluminescence intensities were significantly enhanced after irradiation, which were closely related to the radiation dose and the structure of QDs. The positions of the fluorescence emission peaks did not shift obviously after irradiation. The mechanism of photoluminescence enhancement was discussed based on the results of photoluminescence (PL) spectra, UV-visible light absorption (UV-vis) spectra, transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). This method can be employed to uniformly treat large batches of QDs at room temperature and without other chemicals.
