ABSTRACTSemisolid alloys exhibit a shear rate history dependent flow behavior. The increasing interest on numerical modeling of thixo-casting processes makes it quite important to understand the flow behavior of semisolids. Its apparent viscosity is the key parameter for the numerical models. In this paper a two phase approach is used to investigate the rheology of semisolid alloys. It is assumed that both, liquid and solid phase, can be regarded as inter-penetrating continua with its own viscosity. Thus, each phase is thought to behave as a Newtonian fluid. The simulation results show that the rheology of the two-phase flow is determined by the interaction between the solid and the liquid, i.e. the momentum exchange between the two phases. Non-Newtonian flow behavior of the solid-liquid mixture is predicted although both phases are considered as Newtonian fluids.

The problem of the stability of a two-phase flow is considered. The solution of the stability equations is performed by the spectral method using polynomials of Chebyshev. A decrease in the stability region gas flow with the addition of particles of the solid phase. The analysis influence on the stability characteristic of Stokes and Archimedes forces.

Mechanistic models have been developed for each of the existing two-phase flow patterns in an annulus, namely bubble flow, dispersed bubble flow, slug flow, and annular flow. These models are based on two-phase flow physical phenomena and incorporate annulus characteristics such as casing and tubing diameters and degree of eccentricity. The models also apply the new predictive means for friction factor and Taylor bubble rise velocity presented in Part I. Given a set of flow conditions, the existing flow pattern in the system can be predicted. The developed models are applied next for predicting the flow behavior, including the average volumetric liquid holdup and the average total pressure gradient for the existing flow pattern. In general, good agreement was observed between the experimental data and model predictions.

The well design with long lateral section and multistage frac completion has been proven effective for development of the unconventional reservoirs. Top-tier well production in unconventional reservoir can be achieved by optimizing hydraulic completion and stimulation design, which necessitates an understanding of flow behavior and hydrocarbon contribution allocation.  Historically, conventional production logging (PL) surveys were scarcely used in unconventional reservoirs due to limited and often expensive conveyance options, as well as complicated and non-unique inflow interpretations caused by intricate and changing multi-phase flow behavior (Prakash et al., 2008). The assessment of the cluster performance gradually shifted towards distributed acoustic (DAS) and temperature (DTS) sensing methods using fiber optics cable, which continuously gained popularity in the industry. Fiber optics measurements were anticipated to generate production profiles along the lateral with sub-cluster resolution to assist with optimal completions design selection. Encapsulation of the fiber in the carbon rod provided alternative conveyance method for retrievable DFO measurements, which gained popularity due to cost-efficiency and operational convenience (Gardner et al., 2015). Recent utilization of micro-sensor technology in PL tools, (Abbassi et al, 2018, Donovan et al, 2019) allowed dramatic reduction of the size and the weight of the PL toolstring without compromising wellbore coverage by sensor array. Such ultra-compact PL toolstring could utilize the carbon rod as a taxi and provide mutually beneficial and innovative surveillance combination to evaluate production profile in the unconventional reservoirs. Array holdup and velocity measurements across wellbore from PL would reveal more details regarding multi-phase flow behavior, which could be used for cross-validation and constraining of production inflow interpretation based on DFO measurements. This paper summarizes the lessons learned, key observations and best practices from the unique 4 well program, where such innovative combination was tested in gas rich Duvernay shale reservoir.

In order to acquire the solid-fluid two phase flow centrifugal pump’s slurry head according with the fact, the solid phase effect coefficient must be calculated precisely. By analysising the acting forces on the solid particle, its moving differential equation was established. And the calculating formula of the solid phase effect coefficient was deduced based on the equation. For the sake of verifying its validity, a test of contrast and comparison on the calculating slurry heads by some ways was carried out. The results shows that the relative error values of the slurry head calculated are less than 2.00% with a small and stably error band. The method has the advantage of simple calculating process, high accuracy, low randomness and good practicability.

The effect of solution gas on the two-phase flow behavior through an orifice plate and a convergent-divergent nozzle has been investigated with regard to the flow metering of compressible two-phase mixtures. A proper thermodynamics approach to consider more accurately the compressibility effect in an accelerated two-phase flow, in particular that through an orifice and Laval’s nozzle in the presence of the solution gas, has been developed. From this approach an equation of state of mixture was derived and used in determining the orifice equation. An analysis of flow behavior has been performed and several illustrative plots were presented in order to evaluate the gas solubility effect in the flow metering with an orifice plate or a convergent-divergent nozzle. A delimitation between critical and noncritical flow has been established in terms of measured parameters and a relationship between the critical pressure and gas-liquid mass ratio was also shown.

A computational algorithm for predicting pressure and temperature profiles for compositional two-phase flow in pipelines has been developed. The algorithm is based on the coupling of the momentum and energy balance equations and the phase behavior of the flowing fluids. Mass transfer between the gas and the liquid phases is treated rigorously through flash calculations, making the algorithm capable of handling retrograde condensation. Temperatures can be predicted by applying the enthalpy balance equation iteratively. However, it was found that the explicit Coutler and Bardon analytical solution for the temperature profile yields nearly identical results for horizontal and near horizontal flow.
