The Role of Religious Practitioners in Sustaining Social Morality

Human societies have, historically, undergone a number of moral revolutions. Some of these have been precipitated by technological changes. Will the integration of robots into our social lives precipitate a new moral revolution? In this keynote, I will look at the history of moral revolutions and the role of techno-social change in facilitating those revolutions. I will examine the structural properties of human moral systems and how those properties might be affected by social robots. I will argue that much of our current social morality is agency-centric and that social robots, as non-standard agents, will disrupt that model.

This study aims to examine the role of Kyai in the effort to empower students through the bil-hal da'wah method at one of the Islamic boarding schools in Yogyakarta. This type of research is field research. Data were collected through interview and observation methods. Through the emic approach, data analysis was carried out descriptively - qualitatively. The study results show that the bil-hal da'wah method carried out by Kyai has a positive impact on the students. This can be seen through three aspects; First, changes in theological morality and social morality for the better. Second, to cultivate the mentality of personality and social care. Third, create productivity of economic independence. However, it is still necessary to continue improving the students' competency skills (Human Resources). Apart from the shortcomings, the bil-hal da'wah method can be used as a role model for developing constructive da'wah, both for students and the wider community.

The paper tackles the representations of old age in Constanze Dennig's dystopia "Exstasy Rave". Modern theatrical tendencies and the role of drama as a mouthpiece of social ideas, in particular in matters of aging and old age, are related; ageist stereotypes in the text of Constanze Dennig are analyzed; problem-semantic aspects of corporeality are studied; the possibilities of author's remodeling of discriminatory stereotypes of old age are inferred. The challenges presented by the Austrian woman playwright in her drama allow us to attribute her work to the post-dramatic theater, which in Lehmann's sense is able to help restore the social continuum and support society's internal unity. Through the mouths of the protagonists and the nonverbal plane, Dennig's drama becomes a means of communication in society. The analyzed age stereotypes of the play reveal the author's reflection on the social challenges of modern Western society, including the attitude to the third age and the aging process. In the dystopia, old age is perceived as a physical and moral decline and a burden on society. In the future, discriminatory practices against the older generation are not only verbal, but also physical (forced euthanasia). There are manifestations of self-stereotyping by the aged dramatis personae themselves. Carefully read problem-semantic aspects of corporeality in a dramatic text are a segment of ageist discourse, sometimes with a political color. Yet, the woman playwright offers mechanisms for remodeling the ageist consciousness by means of the female characters (Eva, Michaela). Dennig constructs a sharply negative vision of the potential consequences of the ageist attitude towards the elderly because she observes their roots in the socio-economic and moral-ethical issues of today. Thus, old age is a litmus test for the social morality of Europeans, who set an example to the younger generation with their attitude to old age.

A new morality is generated in the present scientific and technical environment, and a new ethics is needed, an ethics which may be found in both individual and social morality, which can guide a moral evolution of different cultural fields and which has the chance to keep alive the moral culture itself. This chapter points out first the scientific, technical, and philosophical premises of artificial ethics. The specific, the status, and the role of artificial ethics is described by selecting ethical procedures, norms, and values that are suitable to be applied both by human and artificial moral agents. Moral intelligence as a kind of practical intelligence is studied and its role in human and artificial moral conduct is evaluated. Common features of human and artificial moral agents are presented. Specific features of artificial moral agents are analyzed. Artificial ethics is presented as part of the multi-set of artificial cognition, discovery, activity, organization, and evolution ways. A meta-ethical survey establishes the place of artificial ethics within the group of new and emergent ethical fields of the computer culture. Natural and artificial evolution are studied from an interdisciplinary and even from an intercultural perspective, and the co-evolution of human and artificial moral agents is sketched by means of technological and social prognosis.

Play behaviour is notorious for constituting a much debated, yet little clarified field of research. In this article, attempts are made to reach conclusions on the relation between human play and the play of other animals (especially cat play), as well as on the very character of play. The concept of Umwelt is reviewed, as are definitions of animal play, categorization of animal play and the role of meta-communication in playful behaviour. For some, play is a symbol of everything that is good. The author of the current article does not deny that social morality may have originated from play behaviour, but stresses the existence of cruelty play, which leads to additional assumptions. Another notion that is treated in some detail is perceptual play, which proves to demonstrate complex semiotic play that is related first of all to signification. At the end of the article an alternative categorization of animal play is suggested, in which the fundamental role of mind games is emphasized. Throughout the text, examples of play behaviour are offered by the two domestic cats Muki and Maluca.

AbstractWhitehouse adapts insights from evolutionary anthropology to interpret extreme self-sacrifice through the concept of identity fusion. The model neglects the role of normative systems in shaping behaviors, especially in relation to violent extremism. In peaceful groups, increasing fusion will actually decrease extremism. Groups collectively appraise threats and opportunities, actively debate action options, and rarely choose violence toward self or others.

AbstractIntuitions guide decision-making, and looking to the evolutionary history of humans illuminates why some behavioral responses are more intuitive than others. Yet a place remains for cognitive processes to second-guess intuitive responses – that is, to be reflective – and individual differences abound in automatic, intuitive processing as well.
