In this study, optimization of the external load resistance of a piezoelectric bistable energy harvester was performed for primary harmonic (period-1T) and subharmonic (period-3T) interwell motions. The analytical expression of the optimal load resistance was derived, based on the spectral analyses of the interwell motions, and evaluated. The analytical results are in excellent agreement with the numerical ones. A parametric study shows that the optimal load resistance depended on the forcing frequency, but not the intensity of the ambient vibration. Additionally, it was found that the optimal resistance for the period-3T interwell motion tended to be approximately three times larger than that for the period-1T interwell motion, which means that the optimal resistance was directly affected by the oscillation frequency (or oscillation period) of the motion rather than the forcing frequency. For broadband energy harvesting applications, the subharmonic interwell motion is also useful, in addition to the primary harmonic interwell motion. In designing such piezoelectric bistable energy harvesters, the frequency dependency of the optimal load resistance should be considered properly depending on ambient vibrations.

Wireless sensor networks can be beneficial for monitoring ambient vibrations in historical buildings where the installation of traditionally wired system may be either difficult due to wiring difficulties or forbidden due to prohibitive legislation. In this paper, a novel wireless sensor network architecture is presented that is focusing on efficiently monitoring ambient vibrations in historical buildings. Traditional wired monitoring technologies are often difficult to be installed in historical buildings either to high costs for installing the wires or to prohibitive legislations. Employing a wireless system could be beneficial. However, as there is no wireless system of high resolution available in the market, an innovative network architecture is proposed that efficiently combines the benefits of both the wired and wireless systems. The problem of synchronization that this novel architecture introduces, is also discussed in this paper along with a possible solution.

This paper analyses the behaviour ofpiezoelectric transducer for harvesting energy. The transducer was designedusing different materials for harnessing energy that include Zinc Oxide, LeadZirconate Titanate (PZT-2) and Quartz. The transducer was simulated using thesematerials and the voltage generated from ambient vibrations was analysed. MEMsmodule of COMSOL Multiphysics Simulation software was used to perform thesimulations. Behaviour of different materials towards various frequencies madeknown in this study gives an opportunity to estimate the fabricated device and alsosheds light on prospective applications it fits.

A review of research on the vibration control technology inspiration from the biological vibration damping mechanisms is described. First the important concept and background of the bionic vibration damping technology are briefly introduced. Then the basic theories and its applications in the engineering fields are elaborated from three aspects: vibration damping mechanisms of the creatures own the good ability to withstand the ambient vibrations, mechanical models of biological prototypes and its application progress in the practical occasions.

The safety of building structures and contents, as well as the comfort of occupants, under such strong forces as earthquakes and typhoons remain major engineering concerns. In order to improve our understanding of building structural responses, records of a structural array in the 30-story PS Building in Taipei from the M7.6 Chi-Chi earthquake and Typhoon Aere are analyzed. In addition, wind data measured at the Taipei Meteorological Station are also used. First, the field measurement data clearly demonstrate that serviceability of the PS Building met the criteria for occupant comfort during Typhoon Aere. Secondly, several structural vibration parameters of this highrise building, including the transfer functions, natural frequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes, excited by the Chi-Chi earthquake, Typhoon Aere, and ambient vibrations are also determined and compared. The results show the frequency of the first mode for the longitudinal components is approximately 8.6% lower for the earthquake than the ambient vibrations. The transverse mode frequencies behave similarly. In contrast, frequency changes from the typhoon to ambient vibrations are in the third decimal (1.3% and 0.9% lower in the longitudinal and transverse directions, respectively), indicating little nonlinearity. The damping ratios of the PS Building apparently increase with vibration amplitudes. Finally, results of a spectral ratio analysis of the Chi-Chi earthquake data do not indicate significant SSI effects in the longitudinal and transverse directions.
