Teaching problem solving can be a challenge to teachers. However, the challenge is oftentimes not due to a lack of skills on the part of learners but due to an inappropriate design of media through which the problem is presented. The findings of this study demonstrate that appropriately designed multimedia can improve learners’ problem solving skills because of the cognitive functions such media have in facilitating mental representation and information retrieval and maintenance, as well as reducing cognitive load during the problem solving process. Suggestions were made on how to apply interactive multimedia to teaching and learning.

The pedagogy of engineering requires a better understanding of the requirements of students' abilities to learning the skills necessary for working in the engineering community. In many engineering courses around the world, one of the key aspects required of the students is that they complete an independent project in their final year of studies incorporating information retrieval and subsequent communication skills. The current work provides details teaching and learning approaches to enhance student abilities and expertise involving research skills, communication skills, and information retrieval integrated within capstone projects. Findings from this the work indicated that both domestic and international students benefited from the intensive tutorial activities involving computer based information retrieval skills. The implementation of active tutorial sessions resulted in increased grades for the majority of students, highlighting the importance of intensive active learning events for final year capstone engineering students.

The moving image plays a significant role in teaching and learning; faculty in a variety of disciplines consider it a crucial component of their coursework. Yet little has been written about how faculty identify, obtain, and use these resources and what role the library plays. This study, which engaged teaching faculty in a dialogue with library faculty, revealed a gap between faculty’s film and video information retrieval needs and provision of access by the library. Ultimately, the findings of this study can inform and transform library practices to make more moving images available for use in coursework and research.

Developments in communication and information technologies in the last decade have had a significant impact on instructional and learning activities. For many students and educators, the Internet became the significant medium for sharing instruction, learning and communication. Access to knowledge beyond boundaries and cultures has an impact on methods of teaching and learning, affecting professional education in corporations worldwide. The blending of science with commercial applications, new methods of conducting business, and access to published and preliminary research is not longer limited to leading educational institutions and the northern hemisphere. This paper discusses educational opportunities, reviewing the latest trends in information retrieval, along with new teaching methodologies related to availability and globalization of information. The good news is that the multicultural melding of various intelligences and the global linking of intelligent knowledge systems promises to lend a multicultural wisdom to the selection and provision of information. We hope that this may ultimately contribute to a lessening of the gap between educationally rich and poor nations. In this paper the “digital divide” is seen to be a less vexing problem for the future of globalized intelligent information systems. This system, called the “Global Brain,” ameliorates existing differences in national access to educational content repositories used for teaching and learning.

Due to the increasing adoption of computers and networks, web-based learning (e-learning) has become more feasible and acceptable within the worldwide (De Moor, 2007). The Web, as an essential means of supporting teaching and learning, has become an important application in the field of tertiary education. Most Australian universities adopt the Web and web-based technologies to support their students in both traditional coursework as well as online learning (Straub, 2008). As one indispensible mode of education, web-based learning has brought students and lecturers with a much more convenient way to teach and learn. It serves in a variety of learning activities, such as communication, information retrieval, collaboration, assessment and work management. With a strong confidence in web-based learning, it is believed by a number of researchers that this learning mode will continue to grow and capture a greater share of the tertiary education market.

This paper provides a guide through the FMP notebooks, a comprehensive collection of educational material for teaching and learning fundamentals of music processing (FMP) with a particular focus on the audio domain. Organized in nine parts that consist of more than 100 individual notebooks, this collection discusses well-established topics in music information retrieval (MIR) such as beat tracking, chord recognition, music synchronization, audio fingerprinting, music segmentation, and source separation, to name a few. These MIR tasks provide motivating and tangible examples that students can hold onto when studying technical aspects in signal processing, information retrieval, or pattern analysis. The FMP notebooks comprise detailed textbook-like explanations of central techniques and algorithms combined with Python code examples that illustrate how to implement the methods. All components, including the introductions of MIR scenarios, illustrations, sound examples, technical concepts, mathematical details, and code examples, are integrated into a unified framework based on Jupyter notebooks. Providing a platform with many baseline implementations, the FMP notebooks are suited for conducting experiments and generating educational material for lectures, thus addressing students, teachers, and researchers. While giving a guide through the notebooks, this paper’s objective is to yield concrete examples on how to use the FMP notebooks to create an enriching, interactive, and interdisciplinary supplement for studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
