The issues of sustainable development of waste management systems are actively discussed throughout the world both at the level of government agencies and at the lev-el of the scientific and expert community. One of the ways to improve the existing practice of waste management in Russia is the search for ways to involve them in eco-nomic circulation as secondary material and energy resources. The article shows the fea-sibility of using solid municipal and industrial waste for the production of alternative fuels.

Using renewable energy is in line with the global strategy of sustainable development. The use of biofuels in transport contributes to increasing security of supply and reducing dependence of the transport sector on oil, reducing the share of greenhouse gas emissions from road transport and sustainable development of urban areas. The advantage of biodiesel in comparison to other alternative fuels can be seen in use in existing vehicles without or with minor modification of existing motors, depending on the concentration of biofuels in combination with fossil fuels. This paper discusses the possibilities of reducing the air pollution by using biodiesel, pollutants arising as a result of combustion of fuel in internal combustion engines, as well as the possibility of using waste cooking oil to produce biodiesel. The presented results show the reduction of air pollution using biodiesel as an alternative fuel, as well as the possibilities of solving the problem of wasting edible oil by using it for biodiesel production

European transport policy for the first half the 21st century assumes creating the transport system organised with the respect of the principle of sustainable development, providing economic, social and ecological needs of the society and supporting construction of the integrated society and entirely integrated and competitive Europe. Applying alternative fuels and drives in public transport vehicles, including the development of electric-powered vehicles is an essential instrument of this policy. In the paper fuels applied in the public transport and alternative drives were described. Methodological establishments of evaluation of the investment's financial and economical effectiveness associated with acquiring public means of transport with the alternative drive were discussed. Using the method of the econometric modelling, operational and maintenance costs of use buses with the conventional and alternative drive were described. They constitute the basis of assessment of the financial effectiveness of replacing conventional vehicles with alternative propulsion vehicles. They pointed to benefits resulting from limiting the influence of public transport using alternative propulsion vehicles on the natural environment. They find expression in decreasing transport's external expenses, confirming the economic effectiveness of their application. A special attention was paid on vehicles with the electric propulsion. Their application in the urban transport is a crucial factor of improvement of the air quality in cities. Based on conducted examinations it was pointed at the purpose of applying means of transport with the alternative drive.

AbstractThe integration of environmental, social, and economic (ESE) objectives into business decisions and future planning is the path towards sustainable development. The goal of this paper is to address the environmental component of sustainable development within the automotive industry based on the Life Cycle Analysis and Well-to-Wheels approach.Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) is very relevant for making the concept of environmental sustainability operational because environmental impacts have to be examined from a 'cradle-to-grave' perspective. Life cycle analysis is an analytical tool that quantifies energy consumption and emissions associated with the raw material extraction, processing of materials, manufacturing, use phase, and end-of-life (reuse, recycling, and disposal) of products. The potential impact of current production and consumption patterns, on the future availability of non-renewable resources, can also be evaluated within the LCA framework. Thus, LCA provides an effective way for industry to support better management of natural resources, in order to maximize economic benefits and minimize environmental burdens.Well-to-Wheel (WtW) analysis is a subset of a complete LCA because it quantifies the environmental burdens associated only with the fuel production and its consumption during the driving time of a vehicle. Well-to-Wheel studies mainly provide energy use and air emissions inventories.This paper provides the results obtained from two major studies conducted at General Motors R&D Center. The first is a LCA study that assesses the environmental emissions associated with four alternative automotive paint processes and seven different paint formulations. The second is a WtW study that addresses 18 different combinations of alternative fuels and vehicle engines.Considering that the use phase of the vehicle contributes more than 80% of its life cycle energy consumption, and that the automotive paint process is the most energy intensive component of the manufacturing phase in any given vehicle, the results presented in this paper are noteworthy for environmental sustainability considerations relevant to the automotive industry.

In this article the energy efficiency in urban transport is analysed the implementation of which would result in the reduction of energy consumption and of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions and would thus ensure the urban transport system sustainability. Nowadays the relations of urban transport and IT solutions as well as the impact of urban transport on the community and environment are extensive. The integration of information flow in the decision making process related to the modern transport and urban mobility has to be brought to a higher level. The main goal is to upgrade the quality of life in the urban environment by improving intelligent transport systems, implementing new technologies and promoting the sustainable development. In the article the possibilities of urban transport improvement according to modern requirements of sustainability policy and environmental management are analysed. The aim of the paper is to point to unfavourable effects produced by the urban transport upon the sustainable development and mobility and to emphasize the significance of measures aimed at reaching sustainability and energy efficiency with particular emphasis on the implementation of new technologies and alternative fuels.
