The pure squeeze magneto-elastohydrodynamic lubrication (MEHL) motion of circular contacts with an electrically conducting fluid in the presence of a transverse magnetic field is explored under constant load condition. The differences between classical elastohydrodynamic lubrication and MEHL are discussed. The results reveal that the effect of an externally applied magnetic field is equivalent to enhancing effective lubricant viscosity. Therefore, as the Hartmann number increases, the enhancing effect becomes more obvious. Furthermore, the transient pressure profiles, film shapes, normal squeeze velocities, and effective viscosity during the pure squeeze process under various operating conditions are discussed.

Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) has been widely used to measure frictional properties of diverse materials at the microscopic level [1, 2]. Furthermore, there has been the general agreement that albumin plays an important role as an effective lubricant in the frictional behavior of hip implant materials. Through hip simulator, it has been reported that either boundary or mixed lubrication occurs when bovine serum albumin was used as a lubricant [3, 4]. When lubricants contained proteins of albumin or globulin, the frictional properties of the rubbing surfaces were affected by the adsorption of these constituents on the bearing surfaces of the prostheses [4]. Through macroscopic pin-on-disk measurements, another study in the literature has reported the importance of albumin as an effective lubricant for reducing friction and wear of hip implant materials [5]. Although microscopic AFM measurements are very effective for exploring boundary lubrication of diverse lubricants on joint implants, because the frictional coefficients of bearing surfaces in the joint implants can be measured without being affected by the surface roughness of bearing materials, the effect of boundary lubrications of bovine serum albumin (BSA) on hip implant materials has not been well identified. Therefore, the objective of the present study is to investigate the role of BSA as a boundary lubricant in the lubrication of cobalt-chromium (CoCr) femoral head ten years after total hip arthroplasty (THA) by measuring its frictional coefficients with AFM techniques.

In the present work, formability of ultra low carbon steel sheets (uncoated interstitial free and galvanized steel sheet) has been characterized and the effectiveness of dry and liquid lubricants on formability of these steel sheets was evaluated by using the standard Erichsen test. Primarily, some important mechanical properties of materials like strain hardening coefficient (n), normal anisotropy (r) were determined using the tensile test and formability of these steel sheets has been correlated with these mechanical properties. Then these steel sheets were subjected to the Erichsen test using four different lubricants. Teflon, PVC, Polyethylene films and mineral oil were used in the experiments. Finite element simulations were done using various friction coefficients. Erichsen tests were conducted at 1 kN blank holder force and 2.4 mm/min punch velocity. Values of the Erichsen index and punch force-displacement curves were determined for each lubricant. PVC film proved to be the most effective lubricant for both materials.
