Using the association of the low-cost screen-printing technology with the sacrificial layer method, the feasibility of totally released piezoelectric thick-films microceramics of gold electroded PZT type is studied. After the deposition of the sacrificial layer on an alumina substrate and subsequent printing and drying of gold, PZT and gold layers, the final firing is performed at low temperature. This is followed by the releasing step of the Au/PZT/Au in diluted acidic solution. Impedance analysis shows that the electrical properties and electromechanical coefficients of poled PZT thick-films are still lower than those of PZT ceramics. This result is correlated to the high porosity rate of the PZT layer. However these piezoelectric microceramics present a good electromechanical behaviour and can be used as sensors when solicited by vibrations or as actuators to generate vibrations in a structure on which they are bonded. Moreover, the successful fabrication associated to a good electromechanical signature on a metallic test structure suggests Structural Health Monitoring applications.

Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), a device that analyzes the current conduction differences between the fat and water components is widely used for reasons that include convenience of use, non-invasiveness, safety, and low cost. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) allows for the assessment of total body and regional lean and fat tissues and bone mineral content (BMC). The objective of this study was to compare body composition assessments by BIA and DXA before and after a 6-week herbal diet intervention program in 50 pre-menopausal women [mean ± SD: age 30.58 ± 6.15, body mass index (BMI) 31.72 ± 3.78]. Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) was measured by BIA and anthropometry. Lean body mass (LBM), body fat (BF), BMC and percent body fat (%BF) were measured by BIA and DXA. Highly significant correlations were observed between BIA and DXA measurements for LBM, BF, BMC and %BF (r = 0.73, 0.93, 0.53, 0.79, respectively) before the intervention. Differences between BIA and DXA measurements were observed in LBM, BF, %BF and BMC before intervention ( p < 0.01) where WHR by BIA was significantly higher compared to anthropometry before ( p < 0.01) and after the intervention ( p < 0.01). BIA underestimated LBM by 1.85 kg and overestimated BF by 2.54 kg compared to DXA before the intervention. Although BIA and DXA showed highly significant correlations for LBM, BF, BMC and %BF before the intervention, they did not produce statistically comparable results in pre-menopausal Korean women and therefore should not be used interchangeably when measuring body composition.

In the midst of an investigation to perform bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), we were faced with the need to search for optimally adjusted electrodes to perform reading in small biological samples. The best option to carry out these readings is the well-known gold microelectrodes; however, these are very expensive for our research purposes. For this reason, we found an alternative using Accu-Chek Performa test strips as reading microelectrodes due to their low cost and ease of disposal. This article contains an in-depth detail of the components of the Accu-Chek Performa test strip and the process that was used so that they could be suitable for taking measurements on biological material. In addition, a measurement scheme is shown in conclusion to the operation of the test strip as a microelectrode and the possible problems to consider if it is to be used for future research.

Abstract Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is regarded as an important tool for evaluating the body composition of different animals in a rapid, non-destructive, and low-cost manner. A South American fish species, Steindachneridion scriptum, known as suruvi, was selected for study in this investigation. A protocol to produce fish with different body composition was used to allow BIA to adequately predict the body composition of suruvi. The fish were fed twice each day with two different diets; a low lipid diet (8.90%), and a high lipid diet (18.68%). These dietary differences allowed suruvi specimens with different body compositions to be produced. The BIA readings were determined using a Quantum X Bioelectrical Body Composition Analyzer. Two readings (dorsal and ventral) were obtained for each fish. After BIA readings were obtained, the proximate composition of the fish bodies for each individual was determined. All of the study data were used to establish correlation equations between proximate analyses and BIA values. Strong correlations were found for S. scriptum. The highest correlations were obtained for the following pairs of quantities, using BIA data from dorsal readings: moisture and resistance in series (R2 = 0.87); protein and resistance in series (R2 = 0.87); and ash and reactance in parallel (R2 = 0.82). We conclude that BIA is an effective method in determining the body composition of S. scriptum without sacrificing the fish. However, to expand the use of this new technology it is important to define strict BIA protocols to guarantee accurate estimates.

ABSTRACTWe report in this communication on the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performances of copper tungstate (CuWO4) material class. This study was performed on 2-micron thick samples fabricated using a low-cost co-sputtering deposition process, followed by an 8-hour long annealing at 500°C in argon. Microstructural analysis pointed out that the post-deposition treatment was critical to achieve photocatalytic activity. Subsequent characterizations revealed that polycrystalline CuWO4 photoanodes owned promising characteristics for solar-assisted water splitting, i.e (i) an optical band-gap of 2.2 eV, (ii) a flat-band potential of -0.35 V vs. SCE and (iii) conduction and valence band-edges that straddle water splitting redox potentials. CuWO4 photoanodes generated 400 μA.cm-2 at 1.6V vs. SCE under simulated AM1.5G illumination in 0.33M H3PO4 with virtually no dark current up to this potential. Impedance analysis pointed out that large charge transfer resistances (2,500 Ω.cm2) could be the main weakness of this material class. Current research activity is focused on solving this issue to achieve higher PEC performances.
