Feijoa is an aromatic fruit and the essential oil from feijoa peel could be a valuable by-product in the juicing industry. An initial comparison of the essential oil extraction methods, steam-distillation and hydro-distillation, was conducted. The volatile compounds in the essential oils from four feijoa cultivars were identified and semi-quantified by GC-MS and the aroma active compounds in each essential oil were characterized using SPME-GC-O-MS. Hydro-distillation, with a material to water ratio of 1:4 and an extraction time of 90 min, was the optimized extraction method for feijoa essential oil. The Wiki Tu cultivar produced the highest essential oil yield among the four selected cultivars. A total of 160 compounds were detected, among which 90 compounds were reported for the first time in feijoa essential oils. Terpenes and esters were dominant compounds in feijoa essential oil composition and were also major contributors to feijoa essential oil aroma. Key aroma active compounds in feijoa essential oils were α-terpineol, ethyl benzoate, (Z)-3-hexenyl hexanoate, linalool, (E)-geraniol, 2-undecanone, 3-octanone, α-cubebene, and germacrene D. This is the first report on the optimization of the extraction method and the establishment of the aroma profile of feijoa essential oils, with a comparison of four New Zealand grown cultivars.

A longitudinal followup of 59 disadvantaged Negro children from age 3 to 8 indicated that: (1) their mean Binet IQ was relatively stable, while their Peabody IQ rose appreciably; (2) the magnitude of the correlation between earlier and later IQ scores was a function of the interval between test-retest and the age of the child on the initial comparison test; (3) ratings on test-taking behavior yielded significant sex differences and age trends; (4) ratings specific to formal test performance were significantly correlated with IQ scores of tests taken concurrent to the ratings and of tests taken one or more years later; (5) these ratings did not, however, enhance in multiple regression the correlation which obtained for predictor and criterion IQ scores alone. Findings were discussed in relation to other studies.

Cavitation inception behind an axissymmetric body driven by a waterjet has been studied experimentally and numerically. Water tunnel tests have been performed with the body mounted on a force balance. The transom of the body contained a nozzle located along the centerline. Tests were carried out for various water tunnel speeds such that jet velocity ratio, VJ/U, could be varied in the range 0 to 2. Distinctly different cavitation patterns were observed at zero jet velocity (when cavitation appeared in spiral vortices in such flows) and at a various jet velocity ratios (when cavitation appeared between counter-rotating vortices around the jet in such flows). Cavitation inception/disappearance has been determined visually. The body drag was also measured. An analytical method for determination of cavitation inception index has been developed on the basis of a viscous-inviscid interaction concept, with employment of special semiempirical approximations for vortices and consideration of surface tension. These approximations have been preliminarily validated for nozzle jet cavitation (for nozzle discharge in co-flow). It was assumed that visualization allows detection of cavities (bubbles) of 0.4mm-0.5mm diameter or larger. The cavitation inception index is defined as the cavitation index for cavities of such minimum diameter when these cavities are located between counter-rotating vortices. The initial comparison of predicted and measured values of the cavitation inception index shows good agreement.
