Abstract The role of education and research in social progress is vital. Since China was admitted into the World Trade Organization in 2001, its economic, financial and trade assistance with Africa has intensified, reflecting certain aspects of the claims associated with the Bandung Conference in 1955. And Japanese relations with Africa, which were at their peak from the end of 1980s through the beginning of the 1990s, have steadily been declining. Furthermore, as China has become the second largest economy in the World since 2010, it has begun projecting its influential power in Africa. Despite the newfound emergence of Chinese power in Africa, it is Japan that has created the strongest institutional support of its activities in the name of new Japan International Cooperation Agency ( JICA), which redefines Japan relationship with Africa through the TICAD initiative. The competition between these two powers can benefit Africa if she can build her political leverage in her own capacity to identify her priorities with confidence and determination. Using comparative and historical perspectives, this article focuses on the examination of the new trends regarding Chinese and Japanese assistance to Africa with a particular focus on education and research.

The importance and the role of minerals in the economy of a country or the world is manifested by the use of the following terms: scarce mineral, critical mineral, and strategic mineral. Validity of the raw material in the economic processes and the knowledge about the sources of its acquisition, access barriers, and the shaping of prices on the domestic and international market allow developing a strategy for action. The strategy must take into account the objective of the action, time horizon, kind of the instruments needed to apply, and scope of international cooperation. The importance of the raw material for the country is not only the volume of turnover and volume of production obtained thanks to its application. This also means its importance for historical, cultural and social reasons, which is the case with amber. The author presents arguments in favour of both considering amber in Poland as a raw material of strategic importance and the necessity for introducing effective instruments to ensure its further extraction and use.

This chapter analyses the idea that international judicial cooperation shows the level of engagement of one state with others and with people all over the world. One point that is explored is the use of the arbitration framework as a model to enhance international cooperation: the system adopted by the 1958 New York Convention has proved to be very efficient, thus it may be followed by the Conventions on recognition of foreign judgments. Other point is the need of uniform interpretation and application of treaties on international judicial cooperation. It requires, between other conditions, databases that may be created an administered by international organisations or even by private associations. In addition, the rise of networks and the possible role of non-governmental organisations and other private actors to facilitate international cooperation is suggested. Lawyers may play an important role in international judicial cooperation; for example, service of process may be transmitted by bar associations very quickly. The role of international judicial cooperation is ever increasing but what may make this architecture more robust in present times is the further inclusion of administrative organisations and private individuals, in the operationalisation of international cooperation.

One inescapable feature of the Covid-19 pandemic that has swept the world in 2020 is that it has shown how inter-connected and inter-dependent is the human community. It was soon apparent that the spread of the coronavirus was a global crisis calling for a global response. Yet the human community had to meet the pandemic after a period of systematic weakening of agencies of international cooperation as populist and nationalist political movements gained control of nation after nation. This put the issue of internationalism, the belief that the nations of the world should work for greater mutual understanding and cooperation, high on the agenda. The focus of this article is on the role of faith, particularly the missionary dimension of Christianity, in relation to internationalism. It explores what recent thinking about Christian mission might have to contribute to the recovery of internationalism in the crisis of the 2020s.

The language barrier in the dissemination of scientific information is felt more and more nowadays. Owing to increasing international contacts and co-operatin, and the on line use of databases, the influence of the language barrier makes itself felt twice. Firstly, it may impede the search for literature, and secondly, it may hinder the user from getting acquainted with the literature concerned. Three general solu tions to the problem of the language barrier are briefly discussed. Some solutions in relation to on-line searches are mentioned. Translating is the only way to get acquainted with a document written in a language of which one has no command. The increasing role of the computer in the process of translating is discussed. The need for clearinghouses for existing translations is advocated. Objectives and organisa tion of the International Translations Centre are described. Attention is paid to the World Transindex database and publication, and the publication Journals in Translation. The need for international cooperation providing access to litera ture, inaccessible because of the language in which it was published, is stressed.
