The emergence of the Web and the growth of multimedia technologies offer new mechanisms to support and enhance traditional classroom instruction. This chapter reports on a field study in the use of a Web-based distance learning tool. Students enrolled in traditional classroom courses were provided with asynchronous distance learning support consisting of anytime/anyplace access to classroom lectures via the World Wide Web. The traditional classroom lectures were audio-recorded and the audio transcripts digitized, compressed and stored, along with the synchronized lecture slides, for accessing and viewing via the Web. Usage patterns were unobtrusively monitored and correlated with performance. Additionally, participants’ perceptions were collected, compiled and analyzed. The results showed that repeated use of the Web-based supplement was correlated with better overall performance in the class. They also provided some clues to the motivations of users who seek out and explore collateral Web-based support for their own individual learning. This study provides a foundation for further research and application by: 1) helping to assess the utility of collateral support for traditional instruction using Web-based media, 2) shedding light on user adoption behaviors and attitudes, and 3) identifying practical considerations in the implementation of Web-based support for distance learning.

At present, the web-based collaborative learning is the main form of long-distance learning and it has been widely used in the distance learning domain. However, the main body-intelligence degree of the existing Web learning system is low; the existing system lacks to the support of the personal study, which has hindered the individual skill of the users. According to the question that exists in the collaborative Learning, I constructed the intelligent agent model of collaborative Learning which is composed of main control program, student proxy, teaching proxy and the information proxy based on the intelligent agent technology which belongs to the domain of Artificial Intelligence and I discussed emphatically how to effectively realize the personal study by using the machine learning and the data mining method. It can cause the web-based cooperative learning developing along the direction of intelligent and personal

We have developed a Ch Mechanism Toolkit for analysis and design of mechanisms. It was developed using Ch, an embeddable C/C++ interpreter with extensions. The Ch Mechanism Toolkit allows users to write simple programs for solving complicated planar mechanism problems. As an extension to the toolkit, a Web-based system was created for performing mechanism design and analysis through the internet. This paper will discuss the design and implementation of the Ch Mechanism Toolkit as well as its corresponding web-based system. The web-based mechanism system is especially suitable for distance learning. The web-based system for mechanism design and analysis is available on the Web at http://www.softintegration/webservices/mechanism/.

The low motivation and competence of students in distance learning is because teachers have not used interesting learning media in the learning process. This has an impact on the learning outcomes to be achieved. Overcoming these problems the author uses the interactive learning media Artyculate Storyline to increase the motivation and learning competence of students. This interactive learning media can be used as a learning resource and support distance learning, as well as helping to facilitate the delivery of material with additional competency features, quizzes, learning videos, and glossaries that can be accessed offline and online with ease of use on the web that has been provided. This interactive learning media is also declared effective and can increase the competence of students by 5.39%. The author also creates an interactive learning media Articulate Storyline and applies it in learning process

In this chapter we describe the evaluation of Web-based open and distance learning programs in a more technical manner. First of all we discuss some general theoretical issues that are of importance regarding Web-based ODL environments, such as the communication channel between the participating entities, the issue of learnability and the overall evaluation of such an environment. Then we introduce the principles of educational evaluation, of interface evaluation in general and of expert-based approaches in particular, and we compare the empirical and expert-based methodologies. Finally we present the heuristic evaluation, in its initial form as well as in its Web-adapted variation. The main objectives of the chapter are to prove the applicability of the method in the Web in general and in ODL environments in particular and to investigate the appropriate heuristic list, which can assess the usability and the learnability of such an environment.

A web quest, as one of the forms of distance learning, is a tool that allows pupils to study educational material with interest. This form can be especially effective for studying the material of those school subjects, for the study of which is given less than two hours a week. The article offers a description of the web quest “First in Space”, developed and conducted as part of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the beginning of the space age.
