Abstract Five-dimensional $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 1 theories with gauge group U(N), SU(N), USp(2N) and SO(N) are studied at large rank through localization on a large sphere. The phase diagram of theories with fundamental hypermultiplets is universal and characterized by third order phase transitions, with the exception of U(N), that shows both second and third order transitions. The phase diagram of theories with adjoint or (anti-)symmetric hypermultiplets is also determined and found to be universal. Moreover, Wilson loops in fundamental and antisymmetric representations of any rank are analyzed in this limit. Quiver theories are discussed as well. All the results substantiate the ℱ-theorem.

Abstract We derive general BPS boundary conditions in two-dimensional $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (2, 2) supersymmetric gauge theories. We analyze the solutions of these boundary conditions, and in particular those that allow the bulk fields to have poles at the boundary. We also present the brane configurations for the half- and quarter-BPS boundary conditions of the $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (2, 2) supersymmetric gauge theories in terms of branes in Type IIA string theory. We find that both A-type and B-type brane configurations are lifted to M-theory as a system of M2-branes ending on an M5-brane wrapped on a product of a holomorphic curve in ℂ2 with a special Lagrangian 3-cycle in ℂ3.

Abstract We establish the existence of an infinite-dimensional fermionic symmetry in four-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories by analyzing semiclassical photino dynamics in abelian $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 1 theories with charged matter. The symmetry is parametrized by a spinor-valued function on an asymptotic S2 at null infinity. It is not manifest at the level of the Lagrangian, but acts non-trivially on physical states, and its Ward identity is the soft photino theorem. The infinite-dimensional fermionic symmetry resides in the same $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 1 supermultiplet as the physically non-trivial large gauge symmetries associated with the soft photon theorem.

The u-plane integrals of topologically twisted N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories generally contain contact terms of nonlocal topological observables. This paper proposes an interpretation of these contact terms from the point of view of integrable hierarchies and their Whitham deformations. This is inspired by Mariño and Moore's remark that the blowup formula of the u-plane integral contains a piece that can be interpreted as a single-time tau function of an integrable hierarchy. This single-time tau function can be extended to a multitime version without spoiling the modular invariance of the blowup formula. The multitime tau function is comprised of a Gaussian factor eQ(t1,t2,…) and a theta function. The time variables tn play the role of physical coupling constants of two-observables In(B) carried by the exceptional divisor B. The coefficients qmn of the Gaussian part are identified to be the contact terms of these two-observables. This identification is further examined in the language of Whitham equations. All relevant quantities are written in the form of derivatives of the prepotential.
